cloth + 5 pots vs doran's shield
vs ranged auto-attack poke, as a melee with little to no sustain? I would guess cloth + pots but I see so many people taking shield instead

I am no expert but 
is better for ranged auto attackers assuming you can minimize the amount of autos they get in when you go to last hit. It reduces the damage you take per auto. However, it is probably a matter of personal preference.
Cloth 5 is pretty shitty in general these days. Flask or Shield offer more returns over time.
Cloth 5 is good against ranged auto attackers because you can get your first armor item quickly and sustain longer.
Dorans is better versus mages and all-in champions
If you're against heavy harass you may want to consider starting flask
