Elixirs: When to use them?

So Elixirs like and have been in the game for some time now. When I see people using them in mostly at the end game, when they're full build and have nothing else to buy. I admit this is generally when I buy them too. But I was wondering; a lot of those times when you go back and buy an item, or just back and have only like 400-500 Gold and you can't buy anything SUPER important with it, only something small like or ; couldn't or wouldn't buying an Elixir then + maybe a Ward actually give quite a bit of benefit over buying one of the small items.

Coming back with something like or could really hurt the enemy and more than pay for itself. Or are they basically only end-game gold waste items?

I'd say hold off on just buying elixirs whenever, and instead buy them when you have an advantage and want to press it, or you need to make up for a disadvantage. For instance: you just got baron. That would be a perfect time to get some temporary yet uber cost efficient stats from an elixir, that way the bonus you gain from baron turns into a temporary, yet MASSIVE spike in power that is often enough to simply roll the enemy team on the spot, unless they also do this: You team is down an objective (like Baron) or the enemy just killed one of your allies and is making ready to push on your team? Get an Elixir to compensate for their temporary increase in power.

Elixir of Iron I would say is a good thing to get whenever you want to frequently engage or disengage a fight, Sorcery is great for any mage or AP support at any time in the game, Wrath is the same for any AD champ, and Ruin is excellent for split pushing, particularly when you have baron empowered minions with you.

I usually get it at the end of my build, since early game I need to push for my items and not waste it on an elixir unless I'm at a disadvantage. If you look through my match history, my top lane match with Cho'Gath where I went 24-3, I was at full build and had about 5k in the bank, I just spammed elixirs of sorcery, and they really helped me as the game went on.
