Riot's Biggest Balance Problem? No Vision.

And yes, I did intend that pun.

What I mean is; Riot can't actually achieve any balance because they have no coherent vision for what balance is even supposed to look like. They have no overarcing goal; no destination. They're just wandering aimlessly and hoping they arrive there by some sort of divine providence.

When you look at other MOBAs, you can roughly tell what their overarcing balance goals are.

DotA 2? As many viable Heroes as possible, with as many playstyles as possible while not letting anything get too cheesy.

Smite? See above.

Heroes of the Storm? Focus on teamfighting and teamwork, while keeping a little bit of soloing there as well.

And their patches, balance changes and Characters reflect this.

Can anyone actually point to what Riot's overarcing balance and design goals are?

They'll tell us they want diversity in Champion roles, like having more impactful Support Characters - then Sona Soraka Janna escape Bot Lane and summoner 11 summoner 11 summoner 11 . But then let Annie Morgana run rampant through Bot lane.

They'll tell us they want Junglers to be more involved and have more options; then they make item 3930 item 3931 the go-to item and put Shyvana XinZhao Warwick etc. above everyone else. Then have to backtrack and nerf it.

Tell us they want Melees to be more relevant and tankier characters to stand out - so they make Garen Mordekaiser God Tier and Darius Top Tier and let Aatrox Galio JarvanIV Olaf Rammus Sejuani etc. rot.

And that isn't getting into the item changes that make no sense.

How can you achieve any kind of balance when you keep changing what the target is?

What I don't think some people understand is, every champion is available to you. There is no level threshold, or skill threshold you need to aquire before being able to pick up a champ. If you're so mad Darius is god tier - play him! If you're so mad Annie support is OP - play her!

there are so many things that are just straight up incorrect about this thread

in what world are shyvana, warwick and xin the top junglers?

annie and morgana running rampant through bot lane? no mention of thresh, braum and tanky supports in general being mainstays in the bot lane?

garen god tier???

from what body of knowledge are you drawing these statements?

what is Riot's overarching balance/design goal?

None, they don't know. That's sad, but it's the truth

Their vision of balance is to change that vision every few months. Balance won't ever be achieved because everything has to be shaken from the ground up to keep things interesting.

There's a matrix that Riot uses to balance, located in a spreadsheet that they don't release. If you toy around with numbers only, you get the results they get. The list I can comprise of is probably not all the considerations they take.

Just a note, all the champions you list as blank compared to blank are Season 3 main popular champs to Season 5 popular champs.

Aside, champions with great teamwork ability and shut down capability are in right now. League is a team game, and Hypercarries seem to be some people's only way to circumvent this. You have to really rely on your team to pick Olaf or Nocturne, because they can't 100-0, they're not assassins, and have limited peel.

I'll work on finding the best counter to Mordekaiser. I promise you it's out their, or metal kaiser wouldn't keep complaining the way that he does.
