Going Support: Help

Paragon Fury - North America - Summoners - League of Legends

So I'm going for the Gold (V) again this Season, playing my Primary two roles - Mid and Support. This is about my Supports.

Support is my most preferred lane (the order being Mid>Support>Top>ADC>Jungle) and I think I tend to do well in it. The Champions I prefer to play Support as are:

Sona Zyra Leona

What I'm looking for help with is:

  • For best results, who should I be playing most often?
  • Runes and masteries help for these Champions?
  • Build help for these Champions?
  • Who I should avoid picking against whom?

Thanks in advance.

My Summoner Profile can be found in the opening or here: http://www.lolking.net/summoner/na/43730254

For best results pick the champion you are most comfortable playing as. Don't pick a champion a teammate tells you to if you are not confident in your ability to play that champion. But when picking your support try to pick one who has synergy with the ADC your teammate picks.

Playstyles: Sona Poke/sustain Zyra Poke/kill Leona Kill/poke

Sustain laners are passive. They heal, shield and are aimed more at outlasting their enemies. Poke style champions favor short and hard hitting engages. They usually burst then attempt to leave the fight before an enemy can retaliate. Kill style is highly aggressive and do or die. It has the highest risks but also the highest rewards. Sustain lanes counter poke, poke lanes counter kill lanes and kill lanes counter sustain. When picking your support try to pick a style that supplements your ADC's style. If your teammate picks Draven, a notably aggressive ADC, you would probably want Leona or Zyra as your support since their styles meld best with Draven. If they pick Ashe who is more passive in lane you would want to be Sona in that situation.

I don't have more than 2 rune pages. I usually just use what is recommended on Mobafire. Hopefully someone after me can post you a more in depth answer to this part of the question.

Builds: Sona item 2049 item 3092 item 3158 item 3023 item 3190 Zyra item 2049 item 3092 item 3222 item 3117 item 3023 Leona item 2049 item 3401 item 3190 item 3111 item 3110

Left an open slot for wards. You usually won't fill in that last slot anyway because support income is pretty low.

Sona I would recommend not picking into a Blitzcrank, Thresh or Leona. Anything that can 100-0 her is a bad situation for her. She thrives best in lanes where the enemy likes to poke and Sona can mitigate the enemy's poke and dish out her own poke since her empowered Q+AA hits fast and hard and once that's down Sona wants to back off immediately. Zyra is interesting as a support. She is a poke style laner primarily but her passive allows her to seek revenge on anyone who attempts to kill her. What she struggles against is spell shields, mainly Morgana. Morgana can pool her plants to kill them off quickly and nullify Zyra's primary source of damage and also Morgana's spell shield neuters Zyra's crowd control abilities. She also struggles against high mobility enemies but that there is a skill matchup. Global ults also have a way of killing her while staying out of range of her passive ability's missile. Leona is an all-in kind of support. She wants to kill the enemy laner as soon as possible. What counters her is anything that poke her down and can peel her off her targets. Morgana, Janna, Alistar, Lulu and Thresh give her the most trouble. Most of them can poke her down making her future engagements riskier and riskier. Leona with low hp is a useless Leona. The ability to peel Leona off her target makes Leona lose trades. Leona will eventually run out of either mana or health if she keeps losing trades.

One thing I should note:

I generally prefer item 3301 over item 3303, for two primary reasons.

1: It allows me to use Sona's Q and Zyra's Q and E with abandon without worrying if a stay shot will disable the effect, or having to worry about throwing it through minions. And the Passive Gold gen works no matter how well the lane is going.

2: item 3069 is almost always more useful than item 3092 I find. The active is amazing for chasing, dodging, getting away from a fight, getting into and out of lane, and works works with allies. item 3092 only works vs. enemies and has to be aimed, two major drawbacks.
