Playing Azir

So I've just gotten into playing Azir and played my first Vs. Humans match after practicing against the AI for a bit. He is so much harder to use vs. people than the other Mids I like (Vel'koz, Yasuo) but I can tell I already love him. I struggled a bit in the opening vs. Ahri just trying to get used to him vs. people (especially trying to use his Q vs. someone trying not to die) but I picked up in the middle and late game.

So I'm looking for advice on how to play Azir more effectively. Is he a champion I can use in pretty much any comp, or should I avoid him unless the comp is favorable (and go for Vel'koz and Yasuo instead etc.)? Is there anyone he combos particularly well with? Is there a hidden trick or two to using his abilities? What are the common build orders? I know mine from the last game I played was odd, but I was facing 3 super-sustain tanks so I felt Morello+Void Staff was more than justified.

He's an interesting champion in my opinion. He's really squishy, so people get scared and underestimate his dueling potential because he seems to be taking a lot of damage. While not the best for many compositions, he can take advantage of a roaming mid-laner a lot better than most champions, because of his pushing power and turret-taking ability (by summoning soldiers on the towers). Against high damage tanks, I'd recommend being cautious playing him until you've got him down, since they'll soak his damage hard and match it well enough to take him down first, at least in the early game. Also, remember to peel for other teammates as best you can. That's all I can think of right now.

First off, here is a pretty fantastic guide for Azir: http://www.solomid.net/guide/view/130092-azir-build-guide-apc-by-varph

He is personally one of my favorite champions, and is so versatile that he can work well with almost any comp. I've played him a lot both top and mid, and the only time I've had any problem in lane was against a Xin on top, as he is weak against champs that can gapclose and 100->0 him in under 3 seconds. The only part of his build that I consider to be a must have is the 40% CDR, after that build to fight the enemy team. Also, against a tanky enemy team he gets a HUGE power spike from Liandry's, since each soldier auto procs the %health passive.

I love Azir too.... I don't play him very much but I've won 6 of the 7 games I've played on him, and only lost the 1 game because the bot lane decided they were going to go dual adc and then unnecessarily dive all the time....

I've been having some fun with him, but the direction his soldiers take is kind of screwy sometimes it seems.

And that wall is hard to work with at times.
