Who is playing when there are an odd number of players?

Probably a lot simpler to answer than my overthinking it.

There are 7, 5, and 3 players left. If it is 1 v 1, who is the odd man playing against?

Does one player actually end up 1 v 2 via clone bot or something so they take more damage than usual if double defeated?

I remember a 3 player game where I was facing the top player and won, but the guy below me lost by the end of my round. What killed them?

When there are an odd number of players left, one player's team is "duplicated", and sent against the "odd" player, so it's basically just like any "true PvP" round, the only difference being that you can damage the health of the duplicated team's "leader", since it technically doesn't exist.

He died to a ghost, most likely a ghost of you.
