The Rift shopkeepers

It wasn't until yesterday that I noticed something about the shopkeepers. Their body language when the champions beam in suggests they're being caught off guard. Both of them are tending to something (the blue her mount. The red... I don't know what the hell he's doing.) when the champions beam in. They turn around, appear surprised, and then the blue shopkeep shakes her (?) mount awake, and the red turns back quickly to brush himself off before turning around with a welcoming gesture and approaching the counter.

What's their story? Why do they appear so surprised when the champions beam in? What is the red shopkeep doing (eating Poro-Snax? Total Biscuits? Is he brushing off the crumbs when the champions beam in?) With the Institute of War gone, this is no longer a staged tournament, so what are they doing on this plateau and why?

There's some odd mystery about these shopkeepers, and I just caught onto it. I on to you, Riot.
