I just realized just WHAT Dr. Mundo is...

There are not many purple folks in this game, and as I can say with certainty that he is neither yordle nor fae, that leaves only one connection: Jax.

Now how does an Icathian baby, of a civilication that is said to have died out due to their void connection long before the fall of the Shuriman Empire, end up in the lowest levels of Zaun? That is like, several thousand milea and a few centuries to get past, absolutely impossible, especially for a baby, even if it was abnormally strong and seemingly immortal.

My theory is that this must have been a side effect of the fall of Icathia. The void is a plane beyond time and space, so being in there for a month without an anchor to your entrance point in reality, and then leaving again at a random point, could totally throw you into a different space and most importantly, a different time. And it would most likely make you insane. I think the fact that Mundo went through that as a baby saved him in some regard: you can't get insane when you don't understand anything by default and have neither a sense of object permanence nor a fully developed sentinence. Sure, it made him bonkers for years to come, that's for sure, but not in a way that Void-worshippers are (who I suspect to be like cults from lovecraftian literature - pretty fucking crazy)

So baby Mundo fell into the Void. Now, how did he get out again?

And this is where Zaun comes into play - and the lowest levels of it, where all random toxical spill and refuse gathers to form who knows what. Twitch came from it. Zac's entire existence is thanks to that. And it wouldn't have been so weird if some shit just came together in a REALLY wrong way and opened a temporary Void portal - a portal so absolutely disgusting no Voidborn would even WANT to cross it, but whgen talking about little kids there is one thing you can sure of: take your eyes of them for one darn second and they are about to put the most disgusting thing into their mouth they gonna get their tiny hands on - bonus points if it could potentially kill or injure them. So we have baby Mundo in the void, the disgusting portal opens for only a really short time before it falls apart again, and it doesn't even take long and he crawls into it and ends up in Zaun.

And the rest of the lore is what we could read now.

However, I doubt that his powers are Void-related and more of a Icathian thing. For a long time their civilication and their power was build on the Void, so I guess they bargained some powers out for their people, even if it meant their doom in the long run. These could be genetically passed, although deformities could occurr of course, explaining why Jax has no five fingers, but often came with impressive strenght, a lack of sense for pain as well as rapid regeneration that turned tha lack of pain from a sensorical weakness into an actual strenght.

I kinda want to see Jax meeting Mundo now... he'd be amazed that another Icathian exists - and mourn the state that he is in...

He can enter the Void and leave because Mundo goes where he pleases.

I like this theory! A lot! It provides building for the background connection between Icathia and the Void. I have my doubts about a void portal opening in Zaun.. but I would love if any part of this theory came true.

This is actually a very interesting theory; one that would provide a neat twist to Mundo for sure.

Maybe it doesn't even have anything to do with random Void portals. Zaun is a city that deals in unchecked and sometimes immoral experimentation - who's to say that some group of mad scientists out there weren't experimenting on Voidborn DNA and its potential corruption properties? Who knows?

Not only does it explain why his purple color and super-strength, but it also perfectly explains his unrelenting desire to give and receive pain towards so many he comes across, as all traditional Voidborn have some innate instinctual desire that drives their existence. (Vel'Koz constantly seeks knowledge, Kog'Maw has an insatiable appetite, Kha'Zix is constantly looking to perfect himself through genetic & evolutionary means and etc, etc.)

Wait a minute, Isn't Jax supposed to be the actual Baron Nashor?

In the old lore Baron Nashor was some sort of huge purple beast that terrorized a land, and what we see in the rift is what a Summoner had thought Baron Nashor was supposed to look like. (There was more to the theory but i forgot it.)

Never made that connection before, but this is true enough I guess. Perhaps we will discover more of Icathia in the coming time.

"He continues his experiments to this day, even using himself as an experimental subject, as evidenced by his disfigured appearance and his... unique manner of speaking."

Pretty sure he's just a dude that ran too many experiments on himself, thus turning purple, huge, and goofy.

Interesting theory, but I have a few counter-arguments.

I don't think Icathians are naturally purple. Jax is purple, but he's also suffering from some skin mutation, probably from exposure to the Void. Maybe Mundo is purple for the same reasons, but that doesn't make him an Icathian.

Also, if Mundo had actually been inside the Void, I think he would be drastically more inhuman than just "purple and insane". Check out Malzahar's forehead in his splash art: he's literally an empty husk, kept alive by pure energy, and he only looked into the void. If Mundo has actually spent time inside the Void, I think he'd be a bit more... tentacled.

I like your theory, I just think it's a bit far fetched when there is so much rogue magic and experimental science in Zaun that could explain Mundo's origin.

I don't feel like you need to go through the Void to become what Mundo is in Zaun. Have your mother take in a few too many chemicals through the air or liquids, or Singed knows what else, and yeah.

And to be a real party pooper, he was already purple before Jax was related to Icathia and the Void. :P
