@Riot Why I'm disappointed Victorious Maokai

So there's been a lot of hubub over the announcement that the victorious skin this year is maokai. My inital reaction was right along with that thinking "wow, that sucks". I didn't post anything right away because I didn't want to just circlejerk but think it over a bit before adding my own thoughts.

Bottom line I'm disappointed because I'm going to get something that I'm never going to use. Not only does Maokai not fit my playstyle, but he's also not a good pick at the moment. To be more clear, he has a 49% winrate, a 2 percent play rate, and very few mains, source. Not only that but he's not been meta in professional play for quite a while.

Now the initial response to this is "not everyone is going to be happy when only one champion is chosen". I think that argument is still invalid because even so you can try to maximize the amount of people that see this as a reward. The way I see it there are 4 groups of players receiving this reward

  1. Champion mains, these people are really happy because they're favorite champion is getting a cool skin, :D

  2. People who play some maokai or similar sorts of champions, playing some games on Maokai isn't that weird for them so they'll get some good use out of the skin :D

  3. People who don't play the champion but will try it out because the got the skin and want to play it and feel proud about their accomplishments. :)

  4. People who just aren't going to use it and basically aren't getting the reward :(

You want the maximize the amount of people in the first 3 categories and minimize the amount in the last. Anyone in the first three received a reward for their play and are happy with themselves and Riot, the 4th category will be disappointed or even mad. Looking at these though Maokai is suddenly very obviously a bad pick.

  1. Maokai has very few champion mains, one of the lowest of any champ in the game, even looking at the entire season almost nobody has 100+ games on him. Which to me says that even when he was popular people played him some but jumped off the bandwagon pretty quickly.

  2. The top lane meta is currently pretty focused on carry tops, ekko, rumble, irelia, tank top laners aren't really that common at the moment.

  3. Since Maokai has a low winrate and just isn't very good in the current meta people aren't going to think "oh I can play a few games of maokai no problem", and even if they do they probably won't have a very good time on him. Because of his current state this is unlikely.

  4. So now we have a ton of people sitting in this category feeling really bad about end of season rewards.

So Riot, you need to consider things like the relative popularity of a champion, their strength, how many people just love the playstyle(mains), when creating a reward skin to give out to your entire playerbase. I know a lot of people will try to use something they're given for free even if they wouldn't have otherwise, we're on your side trying to make it ok, but when it's something this far out there's not much we can do but feel bad. I realize it might be too late to switch tracks and give us something better, but I hope in the future you'll be more considerate towards everyone in your choices rather than looking more at skin-line teamcomps or roles, or just picking something because you like it. Thanks
