Alright, Jaredan. (Re: Singed and Warwick)

Alright,

Jaredan, in this thread, said that Warwick and Singed are being looked at due to "longstanding inconsistencies" in their story. (Truth is, Singed's lore has been broken for nearly three years, since Soraka's first rework). Jaredan also said he was willing to talk to us about them if someone set up a thread.

So... here's the thread

For your part, Jaredan, you need to explain exactly what you're looking for as far as fan interaction on this topic. Specifically, what the difference is between a "core concept" and when that becomes a "story idea."

I'm not going to try to enforce discussion this time but I hope that people will respect Jaredan's positions, whatever they are.

As someone whose favorite champion has been Singed since the game came out of beta in 2009, here's my input on what I feel are the most important aspects of his character:

  • Singed isn't evil, he's just amoral, which is an important distinction. He doesn't create chemical weapons for Noxus because he hates Ionians or Demacians, or because he wants to hurt people - he creates them just to prove that he can, and because he doesn't care if they hurt people. He gives them to Noxus so that the effectiveness of his concoctions can be demonstrated on a massive scale.

  • I felt that his student/mentor relationship with Warwick was fairly important to his character, but in light of Warwick's retcon from renowned alchemist to professional kidnapper (which I think is a pretty terrible piece of writing, but that's another matter entirely): Singed is described as Warwick's longtime friend, so maintaining that relationship is important. Even though Singed looks like a sadistic madman to "outsiders," his friendship with Warwick is an important window through which we can see how Zaunites perceive one another.

  • For all of his flaws as a human being, Singed is brilliant. He knows chemistry like Heimerdinger knows mechanical science or Viktor knows robotics.

  • His ambition is not monetary in nature (although he probably makes a tidy sum as a chemical weapons dealer to Noxus), it's renown. He wants his name to go down in history, even if it's as the man who created destructive chemical mixtures that were used to kill thousands in times of war.

  • When it comes to his profession, Singed works alone. He doesn't run a chemistry lab staffed by dozens of underlings; he has a solitary workshop hidden away somewhere where he experiments and documents his findings. This relates to his amorality as well; when no test subjects are handy he'll test his concoctions on himself, even if that means chemical burns and disfiguring scars. The way Singed sees it, if he's willing to experience the effects of his creations first-hand, then he can't be "evil" for unleashing them on others - it's just business.

And this isn't a rule, but just to be clear, I didn't run off. The reason for my recent absence is just a private matter I'd prefer not to discuss. The timing was horrendous in light of my commitment to being here more regularly, but it was unavoidable and out of my hands. Still, my apologies, I detest not following through on promises.

Let's start with Singed and Warwick.

So here´s the quotes from Jaredan on the matter.

However, I´m still dissappointed here Jaredan that you still avoid to speak about the very foundations, the core of the problem: while stuff like this will maybe will prevent another trundle - there´s still the feeling that you really don´t know what has gone wrong with trundle, that you don´t see it as a failure in the first place. And if that´s true then nothing disscussed here will have much value, unfortunately.

(not to mention that there´s still no reason given i would feel inclined to believe that retconning the most interessting feature away from runeterra is a good thing, nor is there a solid world now to place these characters in for us - which does make it kinda hard to talk about them, as environment usually does interact with characters and vice versa...so, while talking about specific champs can be nice, i personally feel like you still avoid the deep waters, avoid facing the retcon itself..though maybe that should really be discussed in another thread).
