“The Colorful Mage” and her potential link to the Blessed Isles

The above image was used in Riot’s Champion Roadmap to tease their new, upcoming champion: A colorful (and potentially floral) mage of unknown origins.

Now, while the flowers depicted in the teaser image above may suggest an Ionian champion in nature due to their exotic and vibrant design, I’d actually be willing to bet she’ll be from the Blessed Isles instead, and here’s why.

  • Starting with Xayah and Rakan a year ago, Riot has had a pretty large influx of Ionian champion releases through both new champs and VGUs. Given this recent abundance, I’d say it’s more likely the upcoming mage will be from anywhere but Ionia, as Riot doesn’t like to put out champions of a similar theme or same faction back-to-back (Akali, League’s most recent release, is Ionian).

  • The fact this new champion is a mage already gives us some sort of insight as to what kind of character she might be lore-wise. The Blessed Isles were known to be a paradise of “natural magic”, filled to the brim with sorcerers, monks, priests, and scholars. As a result, it’s not out of the question for this champion to have been from there.

  • But then, how could she have survived the Ruination all those years ago? Well, maybe she wasn’t on the Isles when the cataclysm took place, or perhaps she took shelter in a secret “pocket” of the Isles where no harm was done due to protective magics (this could potentially tie into the Roadmap’s clues of her being “hidden”). What ever it may be, it’s been a long time since the Ruination, and Kalista’s bio seems to hold a clue as to how this champion might still be alive after all those years:

Kalista traveled the world, seeking a cure from learned scholars, hermits and mystics, but always without success. Finally, she learned of a legendary island beyond the ken of mortal eyes, a place said to hold the key to eternal life – the Blessed Isles - and set sail on a last voyage of hope.

  • Aside from lore considerations, the flower in the teaser image appears to be tropical, befitting a small group of southern islands like the Blessed Isles much more than a comparatively large, northward continent such as Ionia.

  • And finally, after playing Yorick a few hours ago I noticed a small detail in his recall that seems to be shared with the teaser image:

Look familiar? Yorick draws a crescent shape in the dirt with his monk spade, not unlike the symbol depicted beneath the flowers in the Roadmap teaser. And we all know where Yorick is from.

Now, this may all just be wild speculation on my part, but as a fan of the Blessed Isles and its impenetrable mysteries, I can’t help but hope this theory holds true.

Oh my god it’s so funny that you post this today! I was thinking earlier, as I was taking a look over the map for the “Easter eggs” Reav3 talked about, I noticed how the Blessed Isles had a VERY specific way of building bridges and other pieces of architecture- they almost always included the crescent shape, and then three protrusions, mimicking the three triangles that come off of the rounded side. I got to thinking that there is a strong possibility that this mage is from the land of natural magic itself! I’m glad that someone else had the same thoughts, because I was casting doubt upon myself quite heavily, because it seemed like a crack theory. I think you may be on to something! Well, that or the obvious, bandle city answer is what lies ahead of us!

Clutch theory. Impressive attention to detail, even if it doesn't turn out to be true.

I would offer a counter-theory that it isn't a literal denizen of those isles; it could just as easily be someone who happened upon a tome or outpost that preserved some of the information and lore of that place.

But either way, I would rate the connection as "likely."

The only thing that bite me in this post is assuming that this new character will be female, I think a flowerish male mage would be something more original, but I agree, Shadow Isles/Blessed Isles were really abandoned by Riot's lore department since 2014 (last harrowing)

Where was it confirmed that this champion is gonna be female?

The Blessed Isles have really been deprived of their lore so I decided to go look at it on the map and here's the description of the isles:

"The Shadow Isles were once a beautiful realm, long since shattered by a magical cataclysm. Now, Black Mist permanently shrouds the land, tainting and corrupting with its malevolent sorcery. Those who perish within it are condemned to become part of it for all eternity… and worse still, each year the Mist extends its grasp to reap more souls across Runeterra."

There's emphasis on its beauty which would make sense when making the origin for a colourful, flower mage.

Here are some pictures of The Blessed Isles that show the aesthetic of The Blessed Isles and I think those flowers could definitely fit in to; it looks like The Blessed Isles were like a Mediterranean Ionia and I love it.

One more thing that seems to give this more credibility

I think its going to be a yordle...Since all the Yordles are hiding from humans and the keyword of the text about that champion is hiding...

I'm more inclined for something about faeries.

Did Riot confirm this champ will be a girl? Just curious.

As much as I would love some Shadow Isles attention, I’m more inclined to believe it’s a Yordle (or something related to them).

The "Hidden" used in the road map makes me think more of Bandle City, the Glade and the Fae.

It's unknown if the Glade still exists in the new lore but it's still a possibility

Will he be related with Zyra? That will be interesting. It's time for Independent champions of them to find their destination, or sad to see that the card does not disclose everyone.

So basically the shadow isles were former Hawaii?

Nanuk Pihoqahiak8/9/2018, 3:08:29 AM1 votes

Flower Yordle mage.

mrmeddyman8/9/2018, 9:14:31 AM1 votes

I'm going with Yordle because League hasn't gone more than 2 years without adding a Yordle and the lanst one was Kled in 2016

The World map symbol for Bandle City is a flower and we got told Bandle City lore is coming soon.

GreenLore8/8/2018, 9:26:16 AM1 votes

Honestly I am hoping more for a Bandle city or a fey champ.

Riot did hint that they have plans for bandle city when they talked about the bandle icon on the world map.
