I'm gonna play the "Darkin Advocate" here and say I really like this new Varus lore.
And to all those people who are suddenly diehard Varus fans I have to say: if not for this update, would you even remember this champion exists? Not even on a gameplay level (where Varus can be classified as an endagered species save for extremly rare but disasterous occurances in midlane from my experience), but also on a story level, with no relation to anyone and some random "evil magical force"?
Can you all stop letting your old lore nostalgia and potential elitism ("I liked lore before it was cool") getting the better of you? Let's be real, Varus was the most generic random dude to ever appear in the story. Generic "Good Person" suffers "Tragedy" which leads them to a pact with "random evil force" that twists them into a "powerful being to take revenge based on said tragedy". Yawn. Overdone. BOOOORING.
He was a cardboard cutout of an archetype that could be put absolutely everywhere, but that genericness just prevented him to have absolutely any depth, as a freely interchangeable part of a story that is also neither innovative or genuine won't surely catch anyone's interest.
Instead we now have League's first collective entity (as in, "actually shares a body"), and the actual chance for lore to have actually interesting Human/Darkin conversation of things - because let's be real Kayn and Raast sure ain't holding any moral conversations about the perspectives on murder. Those are just two massive egomaniacs fighting for who actually gets to do the killing, one just as bad as the other. This is going to the point that I am not sure if Raast is a bad influence on Kayn or if it is the other way around. Probably a perpetuum mobile that creates horrible results and a questionable sense of fashion.
Not to mention that Varus now actually has something TO DO besides just killing every Noxian he meets (which is, like, most of the population of Runeterra south of Freljord and north of Shurima, given the size of the Noxian Empire - so effectively everyone he meets), he's now also looking for his Darkin siblings. At least he tries, decision making is a bit tough with multiple people at once and no functional democratic system.
As to the sexuality thing - I literally do not give a shit. Wife, Husband, none the fuck cares. Would it have changed much if they turned one of the hunters into a woman? Not really, besides that they could no longer play on the "brothers-in-arms" trope that effectively, which they would have needed anyways in the story, so two dudes might have been the smartest choice for that card at least.
Most of the vibes I see of those complaining I can't really take serious, it's either Old Lore Elitism and Nostaliga, with people just hating new lore because it is new lore, or people pretending to actually care about a champion they have not bothered to give a shit about for years. When have I last seen Varus fanart? When have I last stumbled over a Varus fanfiction that was not just taking random character for a cheap pornographic narrative where the characters were completly interchangeable? Heck, can't even remember a freaking cosplay-gallery that's not at least half a decade old.
No one cared, and with now suddenly everyone crying out I just can't take that seriously.
