Nami is a Tidecaller who requires a Moonstone. Diana is the only Lunari in existence in present Runeterra.
Why do they not even have any connection on the Friends & Rivals sections of their bios?
turkeyBACON5 votesWhen Nami was first revealed, this was my assumed lore connection but with the intro of Bard i'm not so sure anymore. Bard can just as easily fit the role of providing a powerful artifact of a moonstone and taking away at equally powerful/mysterious abyssal pearl as his "lore" suggests is his function.
I think I prefer the Lunari version though as that is more grounded and the implications are greater. I'd be far more interested in what would the Lunari do with the pearl than what bard would do. Does messing with dark energies of the pearl lead to their downfall? Are the Lunari actually evil or have darker intent than simply being misunderstood as Diana believes? All much more interesting than a cosmic entity simply fulfilling its cosmic duties.
Of course Bard could be just as interesting but we know fuck all about him and Diana was here first so fuck that guy until riot gives me a reason to care.
CrazedPorcupine5 votesWell, in League Factions Our lore actually has Nami and Diana having worked together to create a new Moonstone and save Nami's People. Our lore may not be "Canon" but at least we work to develop our stories.

Might happen once Riot starts developing lore for older champions again.

Trylobyte4 votesThey don't have any connection because they've never canonically met and aren't really in any position to do so. Diana's a recently-converted Lunari who's spending most of her time trying not to get smited by the Solari and Nami only recently came ashore. The odds of these two people running into each other in such a short time period (especially considering Mt. Targon isn't anywhere near an ocean, if I recall) are very small and even then they may not recognize each other as being significant or meaningful to their goals.

Finally, someone noticed that. The retcon started with the release of Darius (oddly enough, he is the first champion to get a recall animation). It was a considerable shift that had to happen sooner before they needed to redo a lot more champion lore than usual (imagine all the lore being retconed before Azir instead of Darius).
Sharjo2 votesIt felt to me, after Darius, that Riot started to really solidify on artstyle, themes and the like. A lot of 2012 champs kinda set the bar for what would come after them, like Darius, Hecarim (even though he was before Darius), Kha'Zix and Jayce. From them we got Kat's new look, the new TT, Elise and Thresh, Vel'Koz (much later) and Vi.

I mean keep in mind that darius made an appearance in the JoJ,so he was definetly part of the old Canon. However they most likely already toyed around with the idea of removing the IoW already back then and even gave an explanation how Lissandra could participate in the league without revealing her identity,so I think they simply went for the safe route and made it so that they would fit into both canons.

Note that I said 'canonically.' Since the Institute of War is no longer canon, they couldn't have met there since it doesn't exist. And the IoW arguably wasn't canon since the last JoJ issue, since that's when they stopped doing anything with it or linking any champion to it, which means it likely hasn't been considered canon internally since mid-2012.

Fanon is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Lets you move a lot faster and take things in directions of your choice without worrying too much about the corporate angle of things. I like what you guys are doing! And as Riot has shown in the past, popular enough fanon can sneak into canon...

ABlueQuaker3 votesEvery 100 years the Tidecaller of the Marai people presents a landwalker (probably a Lunari) with a Pearl in exchange for a Moonstone which ensures their survival for another 100 years.
It would appear that right after the previous exchange, the Lunari were wiped out and now (100 years on) Nami cannot make the exchange... which brings Diana (the 1st Lunari in 100 years) into the fold.
