@Riot The Swain reworks sums up why I have stopped playing, and why I've been here complaining
The Swain rework has been released, and finally, I am released from League Of Legends. It's like an old ritual has been accomplished and the way Riot changed Swain was the final touch that finally convinced me to abandon this game that I loved so much in the past.
People who know me (and downvote me) know that for a few months now I've been in these forums complaining about Riot's new art direction. 2017 was the year in which I felt League change a lot, and all of a sudden. The game I've loved and played regularly for years had suddenly done a 180 degree turn, and felt different to those ideals which made me appreciate it so much to begin with.
Now, with the Swain rework, I can finally pinpoint exactly what it is that makes me feel like Riot has turned into another company.
-
The new Swain is handsome, has a generically attractive face, even has beefy muscles, doesn't look very old.
-
The new Swain follows traditional anime tropes like the long white hair and the demon arm.
-
The new Swain is not crippled, because otherwise he wouldn't be a perfect conventional pinup.
-
The new Swain doesn't try anything that we haven't seen in a million anime or manga. You could mistake him from a character in another series.
-
The new Swain doesn't even transform into a demonbird because he gotta be a winged bishounen all the time.
Let's now address all of these points again, with the old Swain:
-
The old Swain didn't have a conventional appearance at all. He had a unique look.
-
The old Swain hardly follows traditional cartoon tropes. He's the villain mastermind, of course, but with his own spin on it.
-
The old Swain is crippled. I won't even get into how that feels inclusive for people who have a physical disability, but I'll get into how it added a touch to his personality. Was he cripped for real? Not knowing made it even more interesting and added yet another touch to his personality. And let's not forget, this crippled man had such a mind that he still became the rule of a Spartan-like military power that probably isn't nice to crippled people!
-
The old Swain is unique: because of his demonbird form, because of Beatrice and the mystery surrounding her, because of his appearance as a whole. You wouldn't easily mistake him from another character in another series.
-
The old Swain becomes a creepy awesome six-eyed demon bird that spawns birds. Now THAT's creative.
TL, DR VERSION: the Swain reworks turned him from something more mature and more original and passionate, to a standard trope that seems coldly and cynically designed from the ground-up to have marketing appeal and be generally bland. This is the problem I have with League: to see it turning from my beloved old Swain to the unrecognizable reworked Swain.
Many times I said I would stop whining in these forums. This time it's for real. (Some won't believe it, and with good reason since I did such kind of drama once and yet I kept popping up here. To you I say: you're right in doubting, but you will see.)
I have a last call to make to the developers: please, return the daring, passionate, smart and creative game you were. Don't settle for cold easy marketing.
I have a last call to those who hated my constant complaints: I'm gone now, so you'll be happy. But keep in mind that my complaints were because I loved League so much that I couldn't accept what it was becoming. The fact I gave up shouldn't be good news.
I will not reply to comments - I'm sure it'll be only insults and attempts at hurting me or trolling me.
I just hope the developers will read this, even if I'm sure they'll ignore it (if I still had faith they could change, I'd stay here, like I did all these months I complained in the boards.)
