A little clarification on why Neeko being a lesbian is NOT progressive.

Make an openly gay man character: outrage because a lot of straight men would have an issue with it.

Make an openly gay woman character: straight women don't care, gay men don't care, lesbian women like it, straight men like it.

Do you now understand why it's actually easy to find a lesbian or a bisexual woman in a work of fiction (videogame, tv) but it's much much MUUUUUUCH rarer to find a gay man in a work of fiction?

Keep in mind Riot went out of their way to make sure Taric is NOT openly gay. They also pretended to retcon Varus into gay, but made sure to point out it's only an irrelevant lore comic most people didn't read, and it's not really Varus being gay but only the men who once were him.

Do you now understand why a lesbian character is nothing special and you actually always see them in media? An openly gay character is what would be progressive.

Honestly, don't think many 'straight men would have an issue with it' being a gay male character. There have been quite a lot of gay male characters (or options to go Gay in games like Mass Effect) for a long time, and people never really cared too much.

There's actually quite a lot of people that have an issue with Neeko.

Perhaps not the fact that she's gay alone, but the way it's portrayed and executed sure has caused a great amount of ruckus.

Gay characters, both gay men and gay women, will cause controversy.

Make an openly gay female character: SJWs get upset anyway.

There's no winning.

That's utter nonsense.

I don't even know if that's true.

Keep in mind Riot went out of their way to make sure Taric is NOT openly gay. They also pretended to retcon Varus into gay, but made sure to point out it's only an irrelevant lore comic most people didn't read, and it's not really Varus being gay but only the men who once were him.

So?

Do you now understand why a lesbian character is nothing special and you actually always see them in media?

Is that so?

An openly gay character is what would be progressive.

Nobody cares about what would be "progressive" in a new champion. This is not a political movement, new champs are not political statements and this will not affect real world policy one bit. You know what's interesting? Whether the champion is fun. Neeko looks fun to play.

Now, I would like you to get an actual physical notebook and a pen and write down 1500 times the following: "Entertainment is not politics. Entertainment products are not political statements." You start, I'll go make lunch, you can let me know if you are done when I'm back.
