The Old Lore -- Glad It Is Hopefully Going Away

And the main reason is simply because it doesn't make any sense that figures like Aatrox, Vel'koz, Bard, Nocturne and many others would be fighting, or choose to, or even be trapped into the Fields of Justice. 0 sense.

Bard -- Gave up on world saving for...? Team-oriented games? Lol?

Now, any of the pure evil characters (embodiments of evil -- not talking about Noxeans, but spirits and whatnots) wouldn't ever choose to fight in the League, and I doubt someone like Aatrox could be trapped by magic in there. Ofc it's fantasy and fiction, so Aatrox could technically be forced to be there, if the writers write so... But it doesn't feel right -- very hardly it would make sense. Same goes for Tahm Kench -- if you understood what Tahm Kench is, you would see that there's nothing for him to feast on in the Fields.

I understand what happened over time with Riot when making new champions and respective lores, and also why they are changing it now, the longer they take to do it the worst. The more champions and lores are added, the less it all makes sense.

What about Yasuo finding the Elder's muderer? Oh no, nevermind, he's at the Fields of Justice. Basically, this explanation/lore doesn't fit what League is now.

Will Nocturne torment more people? Some bulls*t about summoners getting ill when summoning him.

What about Nocturne being Zed in the future? Noc can be his nightmare, but he cannot be Zed himself, as both are in the Fields. Again, reading it all, alot of it doesn't make sense.

So yeah, embrace the short bios and new stuff you're getting now. I believe something better is coming, and it may not be this Bilgewater event but in the future. Something to encompass everything. Some good explanation on what are we doing when we play League of Legends might take some time.

EDIT: Sorry for the bluntness and haven't read 99% of the old lore.

Indeed I did not read all journals or whatever it is named. I know the basic from friends, here and there, that we players are the summoners who call upon the champions to fight over a match to decide real Runeterra triffles.

And reading only a few lores, from champions I'm using as examples mainly (Noc, Aatrox, Yasuo, Zed, Bard, not much of a lore that one and a few others I'm not recalling now) and, the current summoners explanation sucks and doesn't FEEL SMOOTH. It's forced.

I understand your attachment though and Riot is kinda of slapping you all from those times where champs were made to fit the lore.

The reason that many of the champions you mentioned don't fit in League's lore is because Riot made a point of it to stop including the League itself as part of various characters' lore long before they actually retconned the lore.

How do you know that a purely evil champion wouldn't choose to fight in the League? Malzahar is arguably evil (he wants to enable the Void to invade Runeterra), and he joined the League. He was probably there to spread the word about the Void (the guy leads a cult that wants to help the Void invasion happen).

Tahm Kench could use the League to meet new "clients." Virtually any champion could find a way to use the League for their own benefit, but it makes sense that some would have to be forced into it (ex: Brand).

Aatrox could have joined the League because it's the replacement for open warfare in Runeterra.

Nocturne was never officially connected to Zed. He was born from the nightmares of summoners and the magic of a nexus, and then bound to Runeterra's plane/dimension via a nexus fragment.

Yasuo could have gone to the League to ask some of the wisest beings in Runeterra if they knew anything about the Elder's murderer. He could have found Riven there. He might have been protected from Ionia by the Institute in exchange for being summoned on the Fields of Justice.

League's old lore was perfectly workable and could have been considered fairly good for a game based around super-powerful beings meeting together on a battlefield and beating each other up (without actually causing permanent damage), and it allowed for a "living world" outside of the League that didn't require champions to change or die for the story to be fleshed out. The League allowed for diplomatic solutions to problems that would have otherwise required war (which would involve the death of various champions). The League also kept some ultra-powerful champions in check (Xerath is effectively a god, Brand would be cutting a path of destruction across the world if he wasn't contained by the League, etc.). If you think League's old lore was bad, try playing Super Smash Brothers: Brawl or the Dissidia Final Fantasy games (which are all good games, in my opinion— they just have cheesy ways to tie together random, powerful characters).

The new League "lore" is nothing more than a few videos that tell us very little + 3-sentence-long champion descriptions for the in-game client. Garbage compared to the old lore. What "technical issues" prevent Riot from simply writing new, real champion bios and putting them on the in-game client or their website? If they have no way to actually provide long champion stories on their website, why are they eliminating the old, satisfying stories from League altogether and replacing them with a few lines of cheese? I don't think there is a reasonable answer to those questions, given that Riot has already displayed that they're able to post longer lore to both the client and their website. I don't expect there to be any "big fix" to the lore or any successful "lore rework" event. I expect Riot to keep screwing up champions and scrapping the old lore while cashing in during their events (Freljord, Shurima, and now Bilgewater).

The new lore has greater limits, but they have yet to be tapped upon. That's my gripe.

Those characters were written without IoW in mind. What is Skarner right now? Jax?

Heck, have you seen Trundle? He got entirely removed for some awful reason.

League's lore was written under the mindset: "Okay, we made this game. You have 3 weeks, give this game a story."

Sharjo7/13/2015, 4:00:02 PM5 votes

Just waiting on people to dive in on this thread and defend the IoW. We get it. It was compelling even if it was restricting. But honestly I never gave a shit about the IoW. It was the least interesting part of the game to me. I don't care about some faceless summoners or their organisations, I care about the champions and the world.

And we get it people. Just about everyone could work with the IoW and it would make for some cool stories, but honestly, some of us just wouldn't be ok with that. The contrivance to get champions in to the League is a contrivance at the end of the day. I don't care how well that contrivance works for some it doesn't work for everyone and it shouldn't. I never thought they'd remove the IoW, but now that they have I'm just sitting here like "You know what, fuck the Institute. Never cared for it anyway."

We get people liked and still like the IoW. Please understand though that some people don't and never did like it.

I disagree, especially since you know next to nothing about the old lore. Most of you "Old lore sucks, new da best, let me suck narrative d1ck" dont even know the old lore.

You spout so much shit here that i am even ashamed that anyone would even say that. IOW was a plot hole, that is right, but every fcking thing in stories has a plot hole, every story. It all made sense, for those who actually read the old lore (not you) and who knew it and know it now (not you). Was some of it forced? Hell yea it was. But it still was good lore.

I wont even bother explaining any lore to you, you can read it yourself, since you know shit about it. There is a reason for these champs to fight in FOJ, they and their relatement to League was explained and made sense, and they were not imprisoned in the League with no allowance to leave (which you said because you read 0 lore).

You even talk about theories as if they mattered in any way. Theories are not lore!

Also, you are so far up the narratives and riots ass even a fcking pack of 100 bloodhounds wouldnt find you.

Guys, before upvoting or agreeing with this guy, did yoju even read what he wrote?

embrace the short bios and new stuff you're getting now

Hes fcking telling us to enjoy 3 sentence stories!!! He is happy with that!! And you are agreeing with it?? What is wrong with you!

Boy I feel sorry for you when the new lore comes out and it's just a expanded version of the old lore with sides stories added in.

+1

People that complain about a retcon don't understand the purpose of it. They didn't make room for 127 champions back when they started.

Read the lore first before making this thread.

Lol well not withstanding reading is a skill...

The reason so-called "evil" champions were in LoL is to gain power.

Knowing that the world formed a new "United Nations" like environment with LoL as a dispute resolution mechanic... it would be very hard for individuals (if not impossible apparently given magic limits on this planet) to engage in world domination. Therefore if they want power they have to "play along" with the system... currying favors and obtaining powers and being opportunistic. Waiting for the "right time to overthrow the system" that is.

Also various champions were "promised", either directly or indirectly, by the League to provide assistance if they participated in League structures. This is the reason most of them are here... they are indeed "getting something for it". And it isn't only evil ones... Nami for example was supposedly promised assistance in her quest to find her sacred thinge if she participated. LIssandra is there because Sej and Ashe are there... and she is too weak to be able to take over the Freljord by herself at the moment (due to many defeats by Ashe or otherwise).

If you need further explanation I can provide it however as indicated by others the lore makes perfect sense. It does require intelligence, which I know millennial generation and their "140 characters or Less" Twitter mentality, cannot handle at times. But it is all there of course.

Indeed it is so...

I actually agree with taking out the IoW on some level. There's a lot of characters that really just didn't fit. It always felt like: "And then they joined the League of Legends!" was tacked on for a lot of characters. For every character that was created around the league, there's a character who really has no business randomly being stuck there. I think that the characters who were created around the league can easily be touched up to function without it.

Of course, good will only come if lore is touched on at all. We've been promised something by the end of the month, so we'll see where it goes, if anywhere.
