What's Your Ideal Lore?

Ironclad Dragon·11/8/2014, 6:25:24 PM·16 votes·6,652 views

Let's get something squared away immediately: don't bash the lore team's new direction. I might be asking for opinion, that much is true, but don't post under the assumption I'm asking for a critique of the lore's new direction. I will respect your opinion up to a certain point, but if you want to create a negative post, do so elsewhere. I will respect Riot's new lore direction, just as I would for any opinion differing from mine, even if I disagree with it.

Now, onto the good part!

The premise is simple: if you had absolute control over the lore, much as an author would, how would you write League of Legends?

My interpretation, which I could expand upon later, basically portrays League as a political war game, with plenty of cloak and dagger, subtlety and deceit outside of the ring, each faction vying for power while trying to unravel the identity of the League, who appeared abruptly for an organization with so much power. Unlike the old lore, no one quite knows who the Summoners are... so they're another element.

My ideal lore?

  1. Keep the institute. And actually make up purposes for champs to join the league (or force them to do so).
  2. Add more trivial stories (for example, Morgy and her Sinful Succulence Bakery), because it's not always fun if we only get to read the serious political matters (JoJ did a pretty good job on that, though)
  3. Why some people are actually friends/enemies rivals. For example, are Tristy and Teemo actually romantically together? Why are Sona and Taric "friends"? How close am I to Veigar? Will we ever see epic battles between Warwick vs. Soraka? Make some friendships/relationships actually canon so that we don't have to keep on guessing anymore.
  4. More "chapter 2's". All the lore we have ever gotten (after the removal of JoJ) are the "introductions". What do these tell us? More ways to write boring fanfictions and out-of-character scenes because we don't know enough information? How about... these tell us nothing.
  5. Adding on to #1, make the Institute actually do something to "help solve political matters". To be honest, that Ionia vs. Noxus match was great.
  6. Of course, develop the yordles into something more than just "comical reliefs". Sure, we can give people some fanservice and a pack of laughs. But we too, are champions that could have possible storylines that can be just as epic.

If Rito can't even do any of that, consider firing the entire lore team. Or make one last chapter where someone blew up the entire IoW and call it an end. That's at least better than no reason to retcon all that because people are too lazy to catch up and that Rito just wanted to ragequit.

I think the new work is good in general, Reborn was great, but I would:

-Keep the League and the Institute. They worked fine, and so far I don't think we've seen anything that would have not worked with their presence intact.

-Bring back the JoJ. It was, by far, the best means of delivering consistent Lore we've had so far, and it presented opportunities for light hearted "fluff pieces" that fleshed out the characters and the world as well.

-Bring back Champion Judgements. They gave a lot of insight into characters, and presented a different side of them in the best cases. (Lux, Vlad)

-Merge the retcons into champions' old identities. I prefer Xerath's new story, but I'd rather see them keep some elements of his old one, for example. Troll King could be a "Part Two" for old Trundle, maybe allying with Lissandra because she can stop the plague from deteriorating his body with her magical powers.

-Some champions need to be integrated with the story more. Short list, Gnar Syndra Nautilus , have no canon or meaningful relations with other champions or factions. Give them something to do.

-Keep the Lore progressing. The biggest problem with Lore, IMO, is that characters just don't do much or accomplish their goals. Nami, you find that magic rock to save your race yet? Yasuo, any progress on clearing your name? There are a lot of unfinished stories, which is okay, but we should at least see some new developments in them.

Ok cool, I'll throw my two cents in. I actually like quite a bit of the new stuff in the lore, but if I were to have some control...

  • I'd wouldn't change summoner's and the IoW being gone. I wouldn't have thought of the idea, I'll admit that, I didn't think they'd do it before they announced it, but regardless I've never cared for the IoW or Summoners; they have always been my least favorite section of the lore. Not something I care about, so I'm not changing a thing.
  • I'd get to work on making a big lore tab for the website with information about Runeterra, its civilisations, key locations, its wildlife, its races, and its history. Essentially I'd get to making a lore hub.
  • There would be a tonne of item lore. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I love the idea of item lore, and I'd want to explore it, perhaps with little short stories or flavor text, but I'd get this down!
  • I'd get started on the journey's of my two favorite champions: Nami and Nautilus. Nami's got a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of time to do it, while Nautilus has a heap of stuff to sift through to find his vengeance. I also would wanna touch on what happens when these two meet for the first time, because that'll surely be interesting!
  • I'd explore Caitlyn's old rivalry with C. I have my theories about this that I'd sure as hell want to make canon if I held the reins, and the relationship between the super-police officer and the un-catchable criminal is one that never gets old.
  • Last on my list would be to get some cool Trundle story going. To clarify: I'M NOT SAYING OLD TRUNDLE WAS OBJECTIVELY BETTER OR THAT PEOPLE'S OPINIONS ARE DUMB OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. STOP. I JUST LIKE NEW TRUNDLE IS THAT SO WRONG?! GAH. Now back on track, I'm really interested in the idea of Trundle and Lissandra trying to one up each other, particularly from Trundle's perspective. Lissandra's a controlling woman so she wouldn't want to give Trundle to much or else he could be an issue. On the same token Trundle knows that Lissandra will try and off him eventually, and he knows she's got way more power than she's letting on, so he's trying to step around and get in her good graces enough to get what he needs to deal with her, while at the same time not stepping on her toes. I like the idea that Trundle and Lissandra are engaged in a metaphorical game of chess that they're not aware 100% sure the other actually knows thats the type of game they're playing. That's super interesting to me and I'd love to explore it.

That's my thoughts and once again: I'M NOT SAYING OLD TRUNDLE WAS BAD OR ANYTHING. I JUST LIKE NEW TRUNDLE. I SEE THOSE PITCHFORKS DAMMIT, PUT THEM AWAY!

I'd bring back the IoW and the summoners, since there's a lot of potential for Babylon 5 -style plotting.

Things I'd develop:

  • High-level political intrigue between Jarvan, Swain, and Azir in the IoW, with summoners trying to gain influence by participating as double+ agents
  • The whole Noxus thing - what's Swain up to? Did he kill General Du Couteau?
  • Demacia! Lux's league judgement and its implications
  • Lucian and Vayne perhaps teaming up?
  • Nami asking Diana about the moonstones and the ensuing plot
Starlighte11/8/2014, 11:44:29 PM6 votes

Funny that the general tone is to keep the IoW and an overall good-feeling towards JoJ. I'm not gonna bash the lore team but they are obviously at odds with their community.

My ideal lore?

-Summoner remain in canon with the IoW. Summoner expanded upon and given some cool stories - I liked how Shaco stabbed the living track out of Ram Stead, how Bob Nashahago ran like a little girl when Blitzcrank had him and Janna compatible while he was dating Nidalee. I liked that and found it awesome. Why? Because a world of only war. Only battle after battle. If I wanted endless wad I would go to Warhammer.

-more summoner/champion interaction. What would Sona do if a summoner fell in love with her and asked for a single date, juse a chance? How about Kayle, having to arrest her own stalkers? You could find funny situations and even heartfelt. Lee Sin meditates in a garden, and is joined by a young boy fresh from his training, looking for help. Together they meditate, Lee Sin helping to stear this young boy from disaster? How will he feel when he fails? If he succeeds? These kind of interactions are why I loved the lore - because you can imagine so much, and even insert yourself and not find it Mary sueish or whatever.

-more political intrugie. The entire Kalamanda incident was amazing. The High Councilor instigating it - what if he pulled a Swain? What if Rey list (or whatever) caused Du Coteau to disappear while Swain used his position to cause Reginald Ashram's own mysterious disappearancd? What if Jax is Ashram from a future being changed by Swain's machinations? There are so many political intrugie with the League.

-more interactions. Did Ezreal and Lux stay together? Does Twisted Fate still pine over Evelynn? Has Ashe and Tryndamere found lovers for themselves, someone they truly love? Has Riven faced down Yasuo, through latter following his journey to clear his name? I want this lore. The battles fought off the Rift with swords, words, and love.

This is my ideal lore. One with the IoW. Because open war is overdone. If I wanted to.read open war, I would read Guardians of Ga'Hoole again, Star Wars Republic Commando. I'll pick up the Wow books or find a new fantasy realm. I do not want Generic Fantasy World #253×. I want Runeterra. And Runeterra has the League of Legends, and the Summoners.

Omnipherious11/8/2014, 11:29:21 PM4 votes

TL; WR: Hire Dong8 staff, make a comic and translate appropriately.

What I would do I would hire the people that made the Dawngate Chronicles. With Dawngate shut down and the devs being MOBA-enthusiasts, I think it's a perfect fit. I've lost track of how many times I've said comics are easy to digest and have a more universal appeal compared to chunks of text. Additionally, dialogue is piss easy to translate into numerous languages so there isn't even drama about "Oh, what about the other regions?". We have VO for all kinds of languages and I'm sure there are capable translators at Riot.

Why it's great for Riot and us Let us consider that the recent Harrowing bit has 12 very specific events highlighted and clearly there is more going on than just the simple descriptions. Some of these would be fine as single pages. Some like the Mord and Hecarim attacks can be 2-3 flashback pages. It is basically Quinn journals and Ezreal notes with more pictures. Also, following the Dawngate schedule of releasing a new page every other weekday would make plenty of people happy. We get a new piece of League story to look forward to and Rioters can add some hype in the discussion/comments section.

What if they run out of stories?! Are you kidding? With 100+ champions? With the additional fluff comics from things like Lunar Revel, Harrowing and Snowdown? Champions have a past, relationships, goals, etc. Factions/regions have all kinds of politics, wars, economies and culture to talk about. There is literally so much shit to go through since we've had radio silence until recently.

You can build hype through this. Hint at relationships, upcoming events, tease new champions. Hell, you could even spotlight Summoners in the damn story. Guardsman Bob, the legend of Noxus v. Ionia; Jesse Perring, man of mystery who taught Lee Sin his ultimate.

If y'all sold physical/digital copies of this comic, I'd buy it. Fuck, I'd pre-order that shit. Even if you charged me $10 extra cause it comes with some bullshit limited edition skin you only get with the comic.

Riot pls, I believe.

All I really want is the League, Summoners, and Institute of War back. There was no reason for them to be just utterly retconned.

As for what i'd want to see in story, I'd love to see champions from various factions interacting with each other. Seeing champs that are often halfway across the continent from each other interact due to this central tying location is really cool to me.

Leona is Waifu11/8/2014, 10:45:29 PM4 votes

First off, I'd make a huge event on Rakkor, probably consisting of some melodrama that involves some sappy backstory that involves all our Rakkor champs being childhood friends or something (No LeonaxDiana). Something (or someone) attacking Diana and Leona (against the Solari head councils wishes) helping her out, because Leona is a nice person. Diana gaining respect for Leona, though she still dislikes the rest of the Solari. Pantheon just sitting in a corner fapping out his DianaxLeona fantasies. JUST REMOVE HIM ALREADY. Also, probably bring something similar to the JoJ back, obviously not the JoJ though. Add some more champion interactions, especially the champions that are usually across the world from each other.

I'd also probably start a series on some normal people that have relations with, or are effected by champions, e.g: a farmer who stumbles across a yordle with a crown in her hands and helps her out, teaching her some more about Demacia, Vel'koz raising a child he found on a roadside so he can learn how humans grow or innocent bystanders Morgana having to serve Kayle at "Sinful Succulence". I feel as though this would deepen Runeterra as a whole, also I just like regular people being screwed with by super beings.

Earl Eulrich11/9/2014, 11:57:53 AM3 votes

I would have wanted to see the IoW/summoners fleshed out aswell. It´s a petty they very rarely told stories about the actual summoners and all the intrique that had been going on inside the IoW. The relations of Summoners and their factions and the relations of Summoners and Champions just would have made for soo many good stories. There just aren´t that many fantasy-universes with a plot deeply driven by politics and a lot of grey (and still room for absurd humour) - opposed to the good vs evil schematic.

And yea...the old JoJ probably really had been the best way to do it: a good mix of "serious" stories about the world and what´s going on + comic relief that totally did fit in in an absurd manner.

Emperor of Arima11/9/2014, 6:20:08 PM3 votes

My ideal lore? well

  1. Keep the institute, but repurpose it.
  2. Make the lore tab, give a general background as to who the champion is like the old days, rather than some kinda weird dialouge
  3. Develop the new stories.

How i imagined the institute should be (spawns from a theory i made til The Great Retcon of 2014)

The IoW controlled the League of Legends and everyone went their to solve their faction squabbles because they didn't want a world threatening Rune War. This kept all the factions at peace and using the League to resolve all their disputes. But over time, two things happened...

  1. Champions are busy. Swain, J4, Ashe, Tryndamere and a whole host of others have countries to run. Caitlyn has a job, and she can't leave the city to have crime run rampant all because she's obsessed with 'C' ... I mean even Morgana has a bakery to run. So while traditionally, champions themselves fought on Summoner's Rift and Howling Abyss/Proving Grounds in the League, eventually a decision was made, to use magic to scan champions and create avatars of the champions we summoners control. It was a tough decision that left many people feeling as though the battles that occured in the league were less significant, but it was a necessary move. However, especially for big events, champions may be brought back to actually fight in the rift like the good old days (maybe like another Ionia vs Noxus-like event in the future)

  2. A water-shed moment for the League, the arrival of Lissandra. When Lissandra appeared and made her stance known, Ashe and Sejuani immediately noticed the threat. They leapt into action to defeat Lissandra (separately of course), which of course the IoW permitted because they viewed Lissandra as a significant enough threat to allow a 'war'. Sejuani however, recognizing the chaos that arose due to the war against Lissandra, decided to use this oppurtunity to have the Winter's Claw attack the Avarosians, their long hated neighbours. This led to a 3-way war known as the Freljord event. At first the institute did not know of this, but news eventually reached them when the full scale 3 way war was already well underway. They pleaded for Sejuani to end the hostilities and focus on killing Lissandra and the Frostguard, but Sejuani wouldn't back down, and told the Institute 'This is a Freljordian matter, do not intervene in our nation's affairs' (or something like that). The institute couldn't sway Sejuani with words, and it was deemed a show of force ala the Kalamanda event was both unfeasible, and as Sejuani said.. not really in their jurisdiction. It was also rather unnecessary as far as they were concerned because a skirmish between tribes in the Freljord wouldn't be a significant enough concern as compared to a Noxian invasion of Ionia, or the dreaded potential Noxian-Demacian conflict. This however, lead to people recognizing that not all disputes have to be resolved in the IoW. In fact, many of the less world threatening conflicts would probably go ignored by the institute. With the Battle for Freljord still ongoing (and I'm sure it's still going on, even as Azir rises and contemplates how the hell he has a descendant when his entire family died) people began to have less trust in the league, and in general, people began to shy away from using the League for disputes... [I have further ideas where eventually the league loses significance as a political institution and begins to fade away but a wealthy businessman from Zaun sees the oppurtunity and buys the rift, and all of its assets recognizing that it has a lot of potential as an entertainment spectacle, and also that he could charge people for using it to resolve conflicts in a much more epic way. It may still be used for political conflicts from time to time (Demacia and Noxu still hate each other.. but once a big nation destorying conflict that neither side wants becomes apparent, they might opt to bring in their people to fight on the rift instead) but it becomes more a place where people solve a number of conflicts... continued

Star Warden11/9/2014, 8:19:09 PM3 votes

@Riot,

Lore for champs can be narrowed down to this:

"In ____ (nation in league) ______ (champion) fights for (glory/revenge/bloodthirst)(pick one)." or "It is a mystery where ____(champion) was originally from or what beget his existence, but he now fights at the League of Legends for ____ (pick above reason)."

If it isn't that, its even worse, where it just simply tells what the champion is, (Looking at you Xerath ) without actually giving any real background or information about the character. I dread to see what they will do to Shaco's lore when they get to him, I bet he has already got one of the above basic lines set up with some fancy words to make his lore sound good to anyone that doesn't know what he could have been with a little work.

My ideal lore has been thrashed by LoL. Namely that guy that said that League's lore wasn't important to players (I believe it was Tommy Gnox, but I can't remember exactly who said it). Well guess what, I expect more of my games. I don't want crap games with crap stories. I want meaningful PEOPLE to leave and impact on me when I read about them, not some character that I'll forget about within the hour.

Currently Riot is letting gameplay get in the way of the overall game. Yes gameplay is MORE THAN EXTREMELY important in making a good game, but anyone that has ever had a hand in creating any form of media with some passion, especially fictional media, should have more pride in their own work than to make this:

Lore Quote:

Powerful beyond reckoning, the ascended being known as Xerath was once a mortal of flesh and blood. He is now something vastly different - a being of writhing arcane energy. Having emerged from millennia-spanning imprisonment, he is now ready to unleash his power upon Runeterra, and utterly destroy any who oppose him.

This tells me nothing of this person's past. Why, if he is so powerful, is he now looking like he is imprisoned within some sort of armor? How did he become an Ascended? Who imprisoned him? Why did they see the need to imprison him? (Being extremely powerful doesn't make you inherently evil) Was it his powers that corrupted his being from a knowledge seeking arcane-o-phile into what he is now?

So many unanswered questions, and yet they think that this lore is complete. Let me tell you, your lore is a disappointment to anyone willing to play your game. There is no story, there is no personality, there is no drive. it is simply a character. I had to look the lore up because it was so lack luster that I didn't even remember the summary of it. I can, however, directly remember many of the champions who still have their original lore, and I can still remember nearly the exact wording of Xerath's original lore as it left an impact of who he was, is, and why he is exactly what he has become.

If you let your lore department continue on this path, your game will become just another game with no soul or personal touch. Art is there, mechanics are there, story is being dropped with every change you implement towards your new and "improved" direction.

I expect more, and I expect better out of my games. If you have to slow down a bit and write out a meaningful lore with personality to it, then please, by all means, slow down, but don't expect me to continue playing a game because of it's story, when you put no heart into the story itself. If you are going to continue to make such crap lore for your champions, I wont even bother to read it, since it wont make an impact.

SchaakaKon11/8/2014, 6:36:10 PM3 votes

Id strive to make the LoLverse seem alive again. I'd make stories outside of champ release or events.

Im not a fan of your suggested political war fare but it'll better than nothing.

Worgslarg11/8/2014, 7:38:36 PM3 votes

My ideal lore would be the return of the league, but not the summoners. Protection spells keep the champions from killing each other; the summoners always felt like they really impaired the lore of the charecters to me. But the removal of the IoW left a big whole in runeterra, and only the summoners had to go imo.

MrBuffington11/9/2014, 12:17:29 AM2 votes

The trouble I personally would have with writing lore for LoL is that these stories aren't really supposed to have an ending; usually the champion lore just serves as an introduction to a character. I'm not sure how to write events that occur outside of this since no matter what, the characters in this game are meant to be permanent in the roster, thus conflict seems to naturally just fall to a neutral position, neither side of a conflict really taking strong advantage over the other, unless you want to make some story where everyone miraculously survives or something. This is assuming you don't want to do some huge shift in the game where every champion, or at least major players, get some sort of rework to reflect the events (sort of like, to my understanding, how lore in WoW works with each expansion pack). This is why I like the old JoJ stories, since many are just fun stories you read about your favorite characters.

AquariusGine11/9/2014, 11:44:11 AM2 votes

I do not like summoners, league of legends/ institute. Having all the champions agree to a single governing organization doesn't feel right.

I want stories to be meaningful. I was touched by Orianna's story, and Syndra's as well.

Olaf joining Sejuani because he wanted an honorable way to die? Now that's intriguing

DudbearHaggler11/9/2014, 3:04:48 PM2 votes

EXPAND THE LORE-TEAM

I want more details about how the different regions/city-states are governed and how the landscapes looks like. At the moment Riot seem to not have decided just exactly what Valoran looks like aside from Freljord and Shurima. In my honest opinion I would like Riot to exapnd their lore team, as in REALLY expand it.

Getting lore updates through new champions and one event a year is not enough when it comes to story and structure of a whole world. When you read a fantasy serie you are not fed with one major fact about the world in every volume but usually little by little in every chapter.

OuttaControl5611/9/2014, 8:29:46 PM2 votes

I'm a realist.

Whatever happens I don't want silly trivial stupid stories.

I want SERIOUS trivial stories.

All of the sideplots should work in synchrony. The geopolitical implications of Nami trying to recover the moonstone from the Lunari should affect the Solari and Rakkor and their respective champions, and the ripples should be felt to some extent around the continent. People in bars saying "Ay hear about the mermaid tryin to get her rock back? Blah blah blah".

If champions are meant to be legends, I want their stories to be something that can be told over a drink in a tavern, whispered as if its the biggest news since sliced bread. The populace should be shown to be engaged with their respective champions and remain up to date. The Lore should be something that could be told at a bar: Something that is folk knowledge and travels by word of mouth. If the lore was just beer stories and started with the phrase "Didja hear the news from X?", it'd be amazing.

Romance depends on the pairing. Ezreal/Lux? Awkward friend dating situation. Tryndamere/Ashe? Love. Katarina/Garen? Tense and dramatic blush that explores their loyalties, priorities and innermost fears.

Black Rose has infiltrated Demacia. One of my pet theories. Seems that the oldest cult in Noxus should have been able to expand its roots a bit better. Makes it a diabolical agent that rivals the IoW in terms of espionage and subterfuge. The fact that a number of Demacian Champions have had unfortunate events occur to them (Vayne and Fiora), the idea that the Black Rose has infiltrated the Demacian elite helps explain a bunch of the Demacian roster: J4 exclusively making friends with commoners (Quinn and Poppy) and outsiders (Shyvana, Xin, and Galio) is caused by his suspicions towards the elite.

I see Noxus through the eyes of Katarina. Through that, I see her in a constant struggle to stay relevant and appealing to Swain, who is looking for the tiniest amount of insubordination or plotting to end the Du Coteau family for good. Lotta work cut out for her, and her 'passion' doesn't help things, if you see what I'm saying.

I'm running out of space so pretty much all of the other nations are caught in the crossfire between Noxus and Demacia and their plots whilst having their own conflicts. Freljord wants to remain independent despite its civil war, fending off Demacian "influence" and Noxian invasions. Bilgewater is raiding Bandle City and fighting off ghouls.

Shurima is Shurima... Yeah...

Solari/Rakkor/Lunari threeway.

Jayce/Vi/Caitlyn antics against Jinx and Zuan.

Ionia trying to keep itself from going insane with philosophical zeal and invading Runeterra after Noxian's invasion.

Shadow Isles trying to kill everyone with a smile. Especially Bilgewater because GP stole their cursed treasure.

Void laying back and smirking at everyone and their futile, petty conflicts, mocking Kassadin who keeps on running around trying to stop its seemingly inevitable doomsday invasion.

The potential is at CLG levels here folks.

4nth0l0gy11/9/2014, 9:14:46 PM1 votes

I guess I'll just list some stuff I want to see fleshed out:

-The fuck is going on with Syndra's castle in the clouds? Are the Ionians just like, "yup, new tourist attraction", or are they all "Sae Eleisa Tera Vi fuck, that's not okay"?

-How's Bilgewater handling all of the Harrowing business and Shadow Isle creep? Is MF up in arms about it? How about GP?

-How's Nami's quest going? Or any questers, really. Taric going on any cool journeys to defend those in need or expand his knowledge? (probably not with those pizza feet.)

-There is, NO WAY, Noxus is sitting idle in its 'stalled' war against Demacia. Less behind-the-scenes schemes, more plans brought to fruition.

-Okay, there's a giant sand-nation in the desert now...I bet some people are pretty curious about that! Ezreal? How's Sivir taking the whole near-death, ancestor-resurrection thing?

-Skarner misses his kind [I think? New Lore is SUPER UNCLEAR KTHANKSRITO]; when's he gonna try to resurrect them?

-Maybe Kassadin or Malzahar is doing some Void stuff? We have several hungry void champions just chilling, and hunger is not something that just chills; surely those two humans are doing something to curb or accelerate disaster? Kassadin walks into the Void pretty regularly, maybe he teamed up with Heimer for some serious exploration and documentation.

-Also, on that note: the Void has popped up in the Freljord (watchers?) and Shurima (Icathia). Does Ashe care, especially since she's now dealing with the publicly known Lissandra? How about Nasus, who's been wandering the wastes for fucking ever apparently; maybe he stumbled upon Icathia, as Kassadin did.

Spectral Torch11/11/2014, 1:36:43 PM1 votes

"The Shadow Isles and The Void joining forces, now that would be an event I would be delighted to see." Flinches and then pats down green flame on shoulder "No, it's not because I support the Shadow Isles, or that I want to see all of Valoran submit to Discord, but...I wouldn't mind that."

They need to delve into the interactions between characters more. Sorta like "the hunt" for kha and rengar. it doesn't impact the game too heavily but it makes the characters more three-dimensional.
