Lore Discussion - Should the Storywriters Be Able To Kill Champions?
I absolutely love the current lore of the game and how every single champion has his or her own place in the League of Legends universe, yet I'm afraid that there is one big problem with it - the one you can see in the title of this post.
The universe is full of characters, besides the 134 champions that are in the game right now there are also a lot of sidecharacters that already exist in the lore with many more to come. As the story progresses, a lot might happen with more and more conflicts escalating - considering all that it just seems logical that sooner or later, some of these champions would have to die, else the story will either be stuck in a moment before everything escalates so that no character will be able to die anyway, or the story progresses anyway with no characters ever dying at all which would just make the story not very believable at all.
Imagine A Song of Ice and Fire with all of its amazing characters and their background stories, with their intentions and interests clashing with one another - without any deaths. It seems rather absurd. And while there are some characters that people are really pissed about dying because people have invested themselves into them ( RIP Hodor ), it's not nearly as big of a deal as it would be for the Champions in League.
Besided investing yourself into a character story-wise, there is also the investment you have for a champion in the actual game, everyone has someone that he or she considers his or her "main". Also, if you were to kill the characters in the lore, how would you deal with that in the actual game? You can't just remove the champion from the game because of that, imagine GP remaining dead to this day - it would just be a dick move to all of his mains. But if they stay in the game anyway, it just seems like the death didn't matter as much at all and like the game is even more detached from the lore and its universe than it is currently.
Once everything in the universe is established and we have an official map for Runeterra, covered every faction and champion, their relationships, the backstory and the current state of the universe, something WILL have to happen and champions WILL have to die, else the story will get stale really quickly.
Another game, though not a video game, has a similar problem with its lore, namely the Warhammer 40k universe with all its playable heroes, factions, etc. in form of miniature figures in a tabletop game. For more than a real life decade now, it has been one year before the 41st millenium. At first it was kinda cool, with every faction being at the edge of escalation - but now that nothing in the lore has changed for all these years and everything has been at the edge of escalation for so long, it has been turned into a meme that everyone is stuck in the year 39999 and nothing will happen ever.
Recently they actually did cange something - the fall of Cadia under the 13th Black Crusade. I'm not going into detail about this event but after this event happened now there is the problem of the planet of Cadia not existing anymore - with Cadia being a subfaction with its own playable army and characters, everyone who bought figurenes for Cadian Soldiers and Characters that are all officially dead now must feel like they just got it all unfairly taken away from them. What does 40k do in this situation? Do they listen to the side that says that they want the story to finally advance or the side that doesn't want it to advance because they hopefully don't want their faction and their characters to be killed? It's a dilemma that League will also reach at some point.
With all that in mind, what would you want for the universe to happen once the story is finally able to progress? Would you be fine with your favourite champion being officially dead in the lore or would you like them to be alive, even if that means that the story won't advance ever?
