Is it possible that the corruption that changed Varus turned him into a Darkin?

One of the lines from the Vastayan stories made the implication that Aatrox is actually the blade and not the being holding it. Aatrox now being an embodiment of war and bloodshed.

This made me wonder if that corruption beneath the Ionian temple wasn't Darkin in origin. In being embraced by it, Varus became one too, his soul bound to his bow rather than his body, and his single-minded pursuit of vengeance becoming the sole definition of his being.

Also, looking at Varus's splash and how his eyes glow purely in the same purple coloration as the energy around his hands and bow, like how Aatrox's eyes and sword glow the same color. It's most noticeable on Justicar Aatrox's splash art, where his sword hand is glowing in almost the same way that Varus's left hand is on his base splash.

Maybe I'm just thinking about this too hard. I don't think the 'corruption' was brought up in any of the vastaya stories, but I'd have to read them again. Varus definitely comes off as more demonic than just bestial to me.

I don't really follow any Youtubers.

I just thought of this after at first thinking the corruption was vastayan related, then realizing that if that were the case, Varus's lore would've been updated. Then I just began drawing parallels to Aatrox in my head after remembering the brief mention of the Darkin in Santangelo's story.

His lore wouldn't have been updated. Only the lores of the vastaya champs were updated,not the lores of all the vastaya related champs. For example Udyr and Swain are known to have ties to the Vastaya,but their lores weren't updated because they aren't Vastaya.

It's definitely not the first time this theory has been suggested.

Lore-wise, I don't know much about Varus myself, but the Darkin theory seems like it might be a plausible direction for him to be taken.

His Universe page basically says everything about him, and has no 'related' champions listed, not even any other Ionians. He has no lore connections to any other champions that I'm aware of.

He's just a guy whose marksmanship was great, and who was chosen to guard a temple that housed some vague "corruption". A Noxus invasion destroyed his village and killed his family, and to seek revenge he allowed the temple's corruption to empower him.

A lot of people have the same theory. On one hand there can be unique forms of evil in the world. On the other hand, there's not much connecting Varus to the world atm, and making him a Darkin host will at least fill the giant mystery of the race.

I dont think so.

Thanks to the new Lore of the Vastaya, we know that Riot is hinting that the Darkins are living weapons... like a lot of people thought... However, even if it seems that the Bow of Varus is alive, the source of his powers doesnt come from the Bow. It comes from the corruption as you said... so, we could say that the bow is a manifestation of the corruption and not viceversa.

We really don't know enough about the Darkin either way. We only have some tidbits about Aatrox's appearances in the past, and the suggestion that they're living weapons.

Rather than being a complete Darkin like Aatrox, Varus could be a look into how a Darkin comes to exist.

Maybe there was a Darkin of Vengeance in the past, who was either sealed or buried beneath that temple, its being not dying but continuing to loom in wait. Its influence could've helped nudge Varus further towards his desire for revenge against Noxus, thus turning him into its reincarnation, so to speak.

Maybe as a small rework, like they did with Gangplank in Burning Tides. "This was Varus before, but now he is a full fledged darkin" and give a "vengeful remnant Varus" skin or something like that, a fancy name to his traditional skin. But i hope this isn't it, as Varus isn't even planned for a rework right now, and i really want them to talk a bit about darkin. They haven't said anything about them for a while, only briefly mentioned in the Vastayan lore.

The sad reality is the Rito is going to drag this out on us, not that, that is necessarily a bad thing but, more than likely the Darkins are the last thing they get too before doing the Void, if not after. I think the next update will be Noxus, hopefully we get something on about Aatrox at least, since they wage a lot of wars. Kled even has ingame interactions toward him. I have a strong feeling Freljord will be revisited and in that case we may get some details from a Tryndamere story.

the woman in Vayne's Bio could be a new champ, a new darkin (killing the loved ones to get a warrior from a child) or even the reworked evelynn, we will have to wait for Riot to do its move, but i doubt it will happen after the Void invasion, that is a world war, the moment that the Void starts the real invasion, there will be no turning back, so they might introduce the rest of darkins to fight alongside the known runeterrians for their world or something like that.

Right now darkins are as forgotten as aatrox itself, but yeah, i hope that at least noxus mentions it briefly (although info abour the black rose would be cool too), and freljord might add a skirmish between trynda and aatrox in the future

The Void update doesn't necessarily have to bring about the Void invasion, but rather it could be small scale maybe tell the story of Icathia's demise. I see them doing a Bilgewater Burning Tides scale event for the main/real Void invasion (we should come up for a name of the event), but this would be after all the Lore's are up to date so that they could pool their resources into it.

I don't think Aatrox is the blade per se, unless the body is a manifestation of the sword in a sentient form to wield itself (like the zangetsu wielding himself in bleach for reference) but this would 'axe' the Varus = darkin theory. Unless Varus is the bow and not the person. Which is a complete rewrite of his character.

Basically what I am trying to get at, is the the 'Darkin' may be the weapons, but the person wielding those weapons are still, well, persons. Hence the blade is not Aatrox. But rather the blade whatever its name is, is the reason Aatrox is considered a Darkin and thus Varus, should his bow be confirmed a Darkin, he would also be considered the Darkin of Vengeance is this case I suppose.

It could also be something similar to Venom -> Spiderman, a parasite that completelly wraps around its host changing their looks, and can take many forms, but in this case, the weapons it produces out of his own body aren't just that, but where the actual parasite is nesting, in this case, Aatrox and Varus' corruption resides outside of the host body by taking the form of an sword and pants a bow

Varus was released long before Aatrox, BUT this would be something cool to make him into if his VU ever comes.

I think the bow is the darkin that is slowly consuming Varus. Aatrox was probably human until he found the darkin sword that consumed him. I think these darkin weapons try to find stronger and stronger hosts and that Aatrox (or the sword that controls him) is probably trying to groom tryndamere to be a host.
