I personally think that they wanted to rename Mordekaiser off of being metal because they have an idea for a new "Metal based" Champion, and can't release it with mordekaiser in the game because of "creative space".

I'm...not sure.
But it's a terrible idea for a name change considering Master of Metal is a duel entandre in Mordekaiser's case. All his skills are named after Heavy Metal songs (he even has his own Heavy Metal songs) and he's clearly made out of a lot of heavy metal. There's also the whole Pentakill band skins which Mordekaiser has a particularly awesome one (and he's the first champion to have one of those, you could say he founded the band).
The core of his being is essentially he's the Heavy Metal Heavy Metal champion, so changing him from "master of metal" to "master of death" ... does not bode well for Mordekaiser's future.
Also, his name is already Death King, calling him Death King Master of Death is kind of stupid outside of the aforementioned reasons. repeating the same thing twice isn't nearly as clever as using the same word to mean 2 separate things.
