Ask Riot: Victorious Skins & More - Nexus

Alright, it's that time of year again. Last year, I made a post with the goal of narrowing down who would have the next Victorious Skin. I was able to get it down to a set of 39, which did include Orianna. You can find the post here: https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/general-discussion/Z5Q9sYXh-who-do-you-want-tothink-will-have-the-next-victorious-skin

Since it will follow the same rules, I'll be copy-pasting some stuff from last time. Like last time, if you don't want to read through all the crap I had to research to get to my final choices for this poll, just click the link at the bottom of the post.

We start looking at options for the Victorious Skin in the Spring. Making any skin takes time, but the Victorious Skin is also teased one month before it’s released. With this in mind, we need to plan ahead for the Victorious skin, especially in comparison to a normal skin.

To begin, we take a look at champions that had a big competitive impact so far that year—this is largely based on Ranked and Pro play. Once we have some ideas for potential champions, we narrow down that list by eliminating champions who:

  1. Already have a Victorious, Championship, or Conqueror skin. We wouldn’t do Conqueror and Victorious Karma in the same year, or Victorious Elise 2.0.
  2. Play the same role as a recent Victorious Skin. Since we had a top laner last season, we tried to avoid picking a top laner again this year.
  3. Have another skin coming out soon. We try to spread out skin content across our whole champion pool rather than drop a bunch of skins for one champ at the same time.
  4. Have a very small number of skins. Since the Victorious Skin can’t be attained by everyone, we don’t want that to feel like the only skin your favorite champ gets.
  5. Have a big balance change incoming. This is definitely the hardest criteria to figure out because balance can be fluid and we’re trying to predict the state of the game six months or so in advance.

Let's dissect each of these criteria to figure out who we can rule out.

  1. Those who currently have Victorious skins are Jarvan IV, Janna, Elise, Morgana, Sivir, Maokai, Graves, and Orianna. Those who currently have Championship skins are Riven, Thresh, Shyvana, Kalista, Zed, Ashe, Kha'Zix, and Ryze. Those who currently have Conqueror skins are Ahri, Nidalee, Karma, Varus, and Alistar (for those of you who don't know, Challenger Ahri and Challenger Nidalee were chosen to be included in the Conqueror line).

  2. Last year's pick was Orianna: a midlaner. That said I think that the following is a good list of conventional midlaners that have not already been mentioned (conventional in this case meaning their main role is mid or it's at least 50:50 with another role): Akali, Anivia, Annie, Aurelion Sol, Azir, Cassiopeia, Corki, Diana, Ekko, Fizz, Karthus, Kassadin, Katarina, LeBlanc, Lissandra, Lux, Malzahar, Neeko, Qiyana, Syndra, Talon, Twisted Fate, Veigar, Viktor, Xerath, Yasuo, Ziggs, and Zoe.

  3. For this one, let's look over the list of skins that have been released since Victorious Orianna (excluding the IG skins since they were chosen by the pro players and thus out of Riot's direct control, as well as release skins): Praetorian Fiddlesticks, Praetorian Graves, Program LeBlanc, Program Nami, Coven Camille, Coven Lissandra, Solar Eclipse Leona, Lunar Eclipse Leona, Pajama Guardian Lux, Pajama Guardian Lulu, Pajama Guardian Ezreal, Pajama Guardian Miss Fortune, Pajama Guardian Soraka, Hextech Renekton, Frozen Prince Mundo, Snow Man Yi, Ice King Twitch, Winter Wonder Soraka, Blood Moon Aatrox, Blood Moon Pyke, Blood Moon Sivir, Firecracker Sejuani, Coin Emporer Tahm Kench, Firecracker Vayne, Heartpiercer Fiora, Heartbreaker Vi, Papercraft Anivia, Papercraft Nunu and Willump, Arclight Brand, Corgi Corki, Fuzz Fizz, Pretty Kitty Rengar, Meowrick, Dunkmaster Ivern, Hextech Jarvan IV, Galaxy Slayer Zed, Battle Academia Ezreal, Battle Academia Lux, Battle Academia Jayce, Battle Academia Katarina, Battle Professor Graves, Little Demon Tristana, Dark Cosmic Jhin, Dark Cosmic Shaco, Dark Cosmic Karma, Arcade Caitlyn, Arcade Kai'Sa, Arcade Yasuo, Demacia Vice Garen, Demacia Vice Lucian, PROJECT: Pyke, PROJECT: Irelia, PROJECT: Jynx, PROJECT: Akali, PROJECT: Warwick, Hextech Rammus, Dragon Oracle Udyr, Elderwood Ahri, Elderwood Nocturne, Elderwood Veigar, Infernal Galio, Infernal Varus, Infernal Shen, Star Guardian Neeko, Star Guardian Xayah, Star Guardian Rakan, Star Guardian Zoe, Hextech Amumu, Majestic Empress Morgana, Splendid Staff Nami, Valiant Sword Riven, and Championship Ryze. In addition, there are also the skins that have been announced: High Noon Ashe, High Noon Darius, and High Noon Hecarim. With all of that information, we can add the following champions to the list: Fiddlesticks, Nami, Camille, Leona, Lulu, Ezreal, Miss Fortune, Soraka, Renekton, Dr. Mundo, Master Yi, Twitch, Aatrox, Pyke, Sejuani, Tahm Kench, Vayne, Fiora, Vi, Nunu and Willump, Brand, Rengar, Yorick, Ivern, Jayce, Tristana, Jhin, Shaco, Caitlyn, Kai'Sa, Garen, Lucian, Irelia, Jynx, Warwick, Rammus, Udyr, Nocturne, Galio, Shen, Xayah, Rakan, Amumu, Riven, Darius, and Hecarim.

  4. For this section, I will be listing those I have not mentioned and have three or fewer skins: Ornn, Qiyana, Sylas, Yuumi, Kayn, Kindred, Rek'Sai, Illaoi, Kled, Vel'Koz, Zac, and Bard.

  5. The champions who received updates this year and those that have been announced will be included here (except, of course, those I've already mentioned): Kayle, Mordekaiser, Pantheon, and Volibear.

With all of that, our list comes down to: Blitzcrank Braum Chogath Draven Evelynn Gangplank Gnar Gragas Heimerdinger Jax Kennen KogMaw LeeSin Malphite Nasus Nautilus Olaf Poppy Quinn Rumble Singed Sion Skarner Sona Swain Taric MonkeyKing XinZhao Zilean Zyra

We could go into which have "had a big competitive impact so far that year", but I honestly just don't want to go down that rabbit hole (considering how much I've already done).

If you want to dispute my methods, feel free, but don't expect me to go back and change anything (I'm already reconsidering my life choices due to how much free time I had to make this).

I've linked a straw poll for you to vote, but please feel free to put your vote in the comment section below, even if it's for someone not on the poll.

Skarner 100 hundred percent.

Can you name a more relevant champion in the meta right now?

No? Didn't think so.

Here's the thing, though. We have no idea if any of those champions have skins in the works that would be released during Worlds.

Evelynn is a likely candidate for a skin, seeing as how she and Sylas were on the wall with Neeko, Kayle, Morgana, and Zoe in the background of the "making Pantheon" video, with Neeko, Zoe, and Morgana naturally already receiving their skins.

Not to mention the fact that Lee Sin is confirmed to be getting a skin(with a Prestige Edition) some time this year, so I'd say he's out.

Probably Kai'sa since she is Riot's favorite champion.

Just the thought of Braum being Victorious has me getting out of a year long retirement from League and start spamming ranked again. Hopefully, I'll have enough time to return to gold before the season ends. I'll probably settle down and retire from league once again. League hasn't been the same since earlier days. I just don't like post-Preseason 8 stuff. Season 8 and 9 are bad.

Naon9/26/2019, 4:05:08 AM2 votes

My guess would be Karthas or Brand as both were seeing some big play last season as Karth was making JG meta and Brand was the go to support for a while. ( Ori was mid so Brand is def viable as the "support" skin)

Draven... Cant believe he dont have one yet. Its thematic skin for him!

Draven

Braum no doubt

AbiwonKenabi9/26/2019, 5:48:24 PM2 votes

I'm going to guess the following few for a number of reasons I will list: Braum Gragas Kennen Sion Skarner Sona Taric

First off, I'm going to state I agree with OP's initial reasons for eliminating most Champions.

I've eliminated these Champions from your final list (anyone feel free to agree or disagree)(Also, I know OP said he wouldn't go down the "relevant in competitive" rabbit hole but gosh darn it I like speculating):

Blitzcrank Has never really had a huge impact in competitive or high ranked, I think its safe to say he is not getting the skin

Chogath Pretty low pick percentage in pro, especially in spring. Not a super popular Champion in solo queue either.

Draven A niche pick that some pros like, has some dedicated mains but overall not a huge influencer. I would say he's a little more likely than most I'm eliminating, but I have serious doubts.

Evelynn We saw a handful of Champs pinned up on the wall of the "Making of Pantheon" video. Most people assumed these were this year's Star Guardians (hence the skins section working on them) but only some of them were. Evelynn was among these Champs so its possible she was being developed for a different skin, like a winter skin perhaps. Also, she wasn't seen much(ha) in competitive.

Gangplank Gnar Have been popular picks in the past, but not a great deal in the spring, which is when they would have been figuring the skin out.

Heimerdinger Heimerdinger is very rarely seen...in any games honestly. He's a niche appeal Champion that has a relatively small group of dedicated players, lots of mains. So its a given he's not seen much in ranked. There's like one Japanese mid laner that pulls him out occasionally but that's about the extent of his current pro appearances.

KogMaw Pretty niche Champion in general, his vulnerability makes him a hard pick in solo queue and he wasn't seen a lot in Spring pro play.

LeeSin Although often picked in competitive AND solo queue, its been confirmed by Riot that he is getting a skin by the end of the year along with a Prestige version. I highly doubt they will do a Prestige of the Victorious skin since its an earned skin AND it gets chromas based on queues you rank in. So Lee is out.

Malphite My initial instinct was to say he was actually kind of likely, but I realized his increased appearances in solo queue are too recent, so I'm eliminating him based on that. He's also not picked a lot in pros.

Nasus I couldn't even find any pick information for him in pros for spring, I feel like I can eliminate him on that alone. He's always had a solo queue presence, but I think he was more influential in years passed, not a lot this year.

Quinn Some years ago she was picked with some frequency, but recently she hasn't been seen at all. I think its safe to eliminate Quinn and Valor.

Rumble Another previous pro darling, he wasn't seen much in Spring. He's also not a big presence in solo queue.

Singed Another oddball pick that doesn't see a lot of pro picks other than a select few players, and even then not as much of late (I don't think he was picked at all in spring). He's got a weird playstyle, so he's always been sort of niche even in solo queue.

MonkeyKing Not really picked in competitive.

Zilean Hasn't had a skin in a very long time. Though he's expected to get one by the end of the year, I don't think they would make it Victorious, since its been so long and would be unavailable to a lot of players. His involvement in competitive is debatable, but in pro play he's picked mid a lot, so taking that and the skin into account, its safe to eliminate him.

Zyra Similar to Zilean, hasn't had a skin in a while. Her presence in competitive is debatable, I would say on the low end, and very little in pro.

That leaves Braum Gragas Jax Kennen Nautilus Olaf Sion Skarner Sona Taric

Braum I think this is the MOST likely. Braum has had a competitive presence nearly since his release, he's seen often in solo queue, especially Plat+ and continues to be one of the top picked supports this year in pro play. He's almost never banned in pros, but that just means you see him that much more. He has a large presence, a sizable number of skins so it wouldn't feel bad if he got one that was earned and hasn't had a skin in a while. This is probably the safest pick.

Gragas Another pick that has seen a LOT of pro play, albeit not as consistent as Braum. This year, he's been seen in jungle mainly, but also occasionally support, and has shifted builds from his former tankier build to a more AP focused one. Gragas is another really safe pick since he's had fair popularity in competitive for a long time.

Kennen Kennen I think would be a really fun pick. He had a lot of presence in the top lane this last Spring split, though he's not seen a great deal in solo queue. Still, his unique gameplay of being a bit of a mage but also rushing into the fray would add a nice variety to the list of Victorious skins. We've also never had a Yordle receive a Victorious skin (nor a Championship or Conqueror) and other than maybe Rumble, who wasn't as big this year, I think Kennen is a good fit.

Sion Has teetered in and out of pro play since his rework, he's been a solid but fair tank ever since. Also quite popular in solo queue, probably more so than most other candidates.

Skarner This one is a bit of wishful thinking. Sometimes Riot picks the PERFECT Champion for the year, someone that was on the rise in Spring and becomes huge towards the end of the year, especially in pro. My choice for this is Skarner; his modest presence in Spring split has gotten huge as he's become one of the go-to picks for western junglers. I predict he's going to have a great World's presence too. That said, he's kind of got the same problem as Zilean and Zyra in that he hasn't had a skin in quite some time.

Sona Taric These two are also odd choices. They weren't really picked a lot in pro during the Spring, but the niche strategy of the "Sona/Taric" bot lane was emerging at the time, and Sona in particular still sees picks in the bot lane now and then (with Tahm Kench more often now). Many people adopted this in solo queue as well. The unique strategy aspect of these two could actually capture something unique that emerged from this year specifically, and I think it would be cool to acknowledge the unique strategy of 2019.

Sorry for my long-ass post, thanks to those who read it. I think OP's narrowed-down list is pretty good, and the candidates I already had on my mind ended up making the cut.

FrancisMuni9/26/2019, 6:48:24 PM2 votes

Skarner. He is picked a lot in competitive but nobody plays him in Solo Q, so a skin like that could maybe restore a bit of his popularity.

NeoJoke9/26/2019, 11:21:06 PM2 votes

I think it will be Sona Definitely a support this year, though i do hope it goes to Nautilus as he is my favourite and is in dire need of a GOOD skin,

Every fibre of my being hopes it's Skarner , but all of those fibres also tell me that it's most likely Braum

If support it will be Zyra or more likely Braum . For ADC I would go for Vayne or Lucian I see u excluded them both but they're still most abused botlane champs in s9 and can't see better candidate for adc vic skin

In all seriousness. Swain He hasn't had a skin for over a year now and he is fairly decent of a pick. Besides, it would be interesting to see a victorious skin for him
