As someone who stays far from pro play, I think this is pretty interesting.
So, background: I've been playing League for 5 years, and I think a big reason I'm still here is that after S2 or 3 I stopped really giving much of a damn if I won or lost, so I didn't play Ranked. I'd rather stick with champs I enjoy than focus hard on counterpicking or current metas or that sort of thing. So I stick with normals.
Thus I've never seen a lot of the worst of the worst chat meltdowns or whatever (Not that Normals are free of those, because I think everyone knows they aren't), and I never really get that feeling of a super crushing loss or anything. It's really nice to win after a hard game, but I care more about how much I enjoyed the 40 minutes before the Nexus blows up than which color the Nexus that blew up is. I've always sorta been of the opinion that, so long as you aren't trolling or intentionally feeding or whatever, you should play what's going to make you enjoy the game most.
I think I played Ranked Teams with some RL friends in Season 4 or 5, and it was still mostly just a goofy affair. At least some people got LP out of it (hint: it was not us.)
Thus I know jackshit about competitive picks (Other revelations of today: VIKTOR IS GOOD NOW???? My precious stupid robot boy from S3 is all grown up.)
So pretty much all of my knowledge about Maokai and his status in competitive play came from...literally today and the topics posted about him. And I think it sounds like an odd choice, because apparently he's not popular right now, but he was huge six months ago or so. And, if the Victorious skin is meant to be about the whole season...isn't six months ago still part of that season? I'd guess it was geared more towards that if anything. And I think it makes sense if you look at it from that timeframe. Although my frame of reference is admittedly limited, I think it makes sense to pick someone from earlier on in the season, when people were just getting into it, over someone who just became super popular towards the very end.
Plus, a lot of the current popular champs are probably getting skins from this anyway, with those world champion skins they put out every year.
