Remarkable how everytime we see an anonymous character that appears to be royalty, we automatically assume it could be the ruined king. The last example would be the man on the floor on Kindred's splash art.
This is not a reproach, I supposed it too, but it is, in my opinion, remarkable how inset in our minds the ruined king is.

Oleandervine1 votesWe don't need every narrative character in the game. Some characters exist to add depth and motivation to other champions. Du Coteau and the Ruined King are characters of power and myth in this game, and I think it would severely dilute their place and power in the overall lore if they were playable. They exist to give players a scope of what is going on in the world, and to let us see that there are forces at work that we can't see or can only wonder about. Let's not ruin their place in the lore by making them playable.
Ao Shin, meanwhile, was renamed into Aurelion Sol. They realized that they didn't like the thunder dragon direction and instead changed it into a celestial dragon. So we did get Ao Shin, just not how he was originally conveyed to us.
Gentleman Gaston1 votesIt's doubtful, actually. Considering the "Ruined" King hails from the land of undeath, it's unlikely he's truly "dead" at all (probably in a state much worse than death).
Also, Kindred states that they're not allowed in the Shadow Isles when purchasing BoRK, most likely because it is a land of undeath rather than one that lets death happen naturally. Kinda highlights the unique aspects of the Shadow Isles, really. Most people would assume, due to the spooky nature and all of the skeletons and ghosts and such, that it's a place that reveres death. In reality it values neither life nor death, but that unholy place that lies between.

On a more deeper level, it explains a connection between mana and death, while the finale will bring to light the purpose of why we are playing League of Legends at all--the reason why we are tasked at destroying Nexus Shards and what the heck they are even for.
