...that the new Gangplank actually has a identity instead of just being a plain, common pirate like the old Gangplank.

Especially after this "re-rework" - he now has the identity of a pirate that lost his crew, his arm, his respect, the control of Bilgewater, and almost lost his life.

And his Captain skin now represents 2 things: both how he was before all those events - and how he can possibly be once he manages to recover all those things (well, with the exception of his arm).

Funny thing, but something's telling me that it's possible to bring him back his arm with some healing magic, but GP still wouldn't do it and would keep the gauntlet as a memory of his downfall.

I feel like in the new canon they're putting some restrictions on the use of magic, particularly healing magic. If he died and was re-animated by the Shadow Isles though, he might get a bigger, better, more awesome arm to replace his prosthetic.

The idea that they went with the frankenstien/hextech methodology with Urgot as opposed to straight up necromancy because they tried that with Sion and he became an unkillable monster they couldn't control. Urgot was important enough for High Command to want alive but they weren't willing to go the Sion route.

He only needed the one, but he couldn't in Burning Tides when they got caught until Graves snuck him one. There's proper rules on how magic works in the new canon now and I, as a dude who likes the minor details of things, appreciate that.

I would imagine that healing magic at its core would simply remove fatigue/pain in some cases, and accelerate the healing process.

Instant healing would probably take a VERY powerful mage, and a fuckton of mana (if mages still use mana in the new canon), and then we have to wonder what mana is in the new canon. Life force? Another unknown element within people?

I eagerly await this revelation :3

League's true healer Soraka has to sacrifice health in game to heal people. While that's gameplay in the lore that'd be interesting, especially considering her fall from grace. It implies such healing that's wound closing, limb re-making stuff is very much pure magic and only beings like Soraka and Bard (maybe) can access it. Since Soraka's fall from grace she has to sacrifice her own vitality to access that power again. I like this thematically for some reason.

Well I would think Soraka is a special case.

But for the typical healer, I think recreating an arm, or even re-binding an arm that looks like it went through a meat grinder would be a bit above their abilities.

Sure, he has all of those things, but with the retcon of who GP was/is... We don't really have a clear view on who he was before. Meaning that he is the cliched person who has lost everything and wants to get it all back. Yeah, we know he had control on Bilgewater and that he was "brutal", but when that is the entirety of your identity, that isn't really an identity.

So, he went from a normal pirate captain (with all that implies) to a person who lost it all (with all that implies). Didn't really get more complex, just changed.

For some of those I'd agree.

Braum is just a decent bloke looking to help people. There really hasn't been anything more to his lore than he's just a stand up guy.

Swain isn't just some lame general. He's manipulated the politics in Noxus with the help of Darius/Leblanc to make himself THE most powerful person in Noxus, which arguably makes him the most powerful single person in Runeterra from a military power/personal influence perspective. You'd have to try really hard to make Swain lame in light of objective facts.

Jinx is just crazy. She's the Joker without any of the motivations that drive the Joker. The textbook definition of CE insane without any of the background that could make a character like that compelling other than how relatively interesting that alignment is.

Karthus is just a cliched deathbringer at the moment.

So, honestly, you did a 3/4 good job at identifying characters with lame lore, which really strengthens my point and sort of nullifies your point at the same time.

no you misunderstand my point, it was about how you described Gangplanks new lore. you can make almost anything sound cliched if you describe the the right way and vise versa. i off course think swain has a rich story. and karthus is more then just a deathbringer, he is a deeply disturbed man that gets a boner for death

Your point was an attempt to illustrate how I was oversimplifying. But, I wasn't really. I mean, please, try to explain to me the depth of the Gangplank lore that I missed.

And no, liking doing scrimshaw on living people and being a tyrant doesn't count as personality. Neither does getting blown up. That isn't even enough detail to qualify as character development in a very short story.

I don't know how they did it, but Riot missed a huge opportunity: Cyborg Pirate.

Don't get me wrong, that's obviously what they were going for. But this newest GP doesn't really scream out "pirate" to me as much anymore. It's more like some random dude who's got a metal limb and a vendetta.

His identity came with his rework. The lore depicted him as brutal and bloodthirsty, yet organized and intelligent. The flame on his sword hinted to some magical power, which distanced him from generic pirates.

I just don't like his hat.

Everything else about his new look is fantastic, but his hat is just... weird. Why would you put to pointy little flaps on the front? it just doesn't make sense.

As for the cyborg arm, I love it. Basically, anything turned cyborg is a win in my eyes, it's just my favorite trope.

He just doesn't look like a disenfranchised but dangerous pirate to me. I think that's what Riot was trying to go for, but excepting the hat and cyber arm, he looks like all the raunchy middle aged losers I used to work construction and various other dead end jobs with back in high school. Men who had reached their forties working days, drinking nights, and chasing anything in a skirt; and as a result hadn't done a single worthwhile thing in their entire lives. He looks like a deadend loser.

And if any pirate would, it would be gangplank, who before his fall was the most dangerous and ambitious pirate captain in the world. There is no way that losing bilgewater, his fleet, and even an arm would turn him in to some witless slob.

As I said, in the first line of this conversation. He doesn't look like someone who had everything and lost it, and intends to get it back with a vengeance, a copious amount of vengeance in Gangplank's case. He looks like someone without ambition or drive who either has never gained anything in his life, or has lost everything and didn't care enough to get it back. Obviously the latter in GPs case.

I mean look at him. A cape and hat fished out of a dumpster, some completely nonsensical shoulder suspender.... things, not only no coat but no shirt, who else do we know that sports that look? That's right, Gragas, a raging alcoholic without the slightest real purpose or aim in life.

He doesn't look like he is putting forth any effort to be the Pirate King that he once was or to get his vengeance on Miss Fortune. He looks sloppy, slovenly, witless and without ambition; as if he has given up, not as if he is trying to fight his way back to the top.

Well what do you expect a man thrown from the top of success to look like. What would you make him look like that differs from his previous look?

At this point he doesnt care what he looks like. He even says in his VO he was done with being "civil." He is supposed to look brutal and worn. He already looked like he was aged in his rework.

The gut thing is eh but maybe he had been sucking it in and holding it with a belt.

Eh, I mostly just dislike the fact that apparently being caught in an explosion changed Gangplank's body type. He seems to be a lot bulkier than before, which is weird.

About his new lore, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Giving him a reason to go out and fight is nice, but I really like his previous persona as a dictator.

Jolly GP was the best. I wish they just made a new character. GP is too evil now. Oddly enough, he isn't that scary in game. He's still known for his ult having the most effect.

Well, I play on the BR server where he retained his dub actor that still manages to bring the personality of Old Gangplank to current Gangplank, so I get the best of both worlds.

Also: Fun Fact, before Gangplank had this second redesign, he still used his old pick line, I guess now I know why they didn't change that.

I actually loved him being the narrator to matches. It was so funny to hear him saying "Everything has an end/Todas as coisas têm um fim" if you were to be shot down or "Your ally turned into fish's food/Seu aliado virou comida de peixe" if one of your allies died or "Two mans at the sea/Dois homens ao mar" if an enemy scored a double kill. It made losing battles at least funny.
