Shadow and Fortune: Opinions Ahead
I want to keep this simple, so let's go;
1) I'm not a hater.
Burning Tides was pretty good. It was the moment that finally started to put the world of League in motion, the moment that finally started to redeem the cluster-fuck of the Retcon (still a lot of clean-up left... but that's another story). It was the moment that I actually found myself caring about characters, beyond occasionally reading their intro bio and going "Oh hey, that's neat."
With Shadow and Fortune, I'm very glad to see Riot taking initiatives to pick up loose-ends or beginnings and start to progress things instead of just moving on to the next new thread of an ever expanding world-fabric.
2) But Shadow and Fortune kinda sucks.
I'm going to be real here; Chapter 3 was a huge let-down and I find my interest in Bilgewater quickly deteriorating.
First of all, Lucian. Fucking Lucian. Yes, he's the guy who fights the Shadow Isles, we know that in his intro. So... what does he do here? Swoops in to deus ex machina Miss Fortune and gang away to the next scene. It would have been nice to see MF herself face off with Hecarim while Lucian was in his own scene going for Thresh. I thought the point of this Retcon was th let characters change, live; and die. Why can't Lucian finally have a canon duel with Thresh, and maybe even kill him and free Sena's soul?
Next Olaf; and this is what really irked me. You took the time to give Olaf some ridiculous battle with a worm and essentially reduce him to comic relief, but we can't have Lucian making something happen in this event? Miss Fortune can't prove herself to be the champion we know her as and duel with Hecarim? Olaf has done fuck-all and is pretty pointless in this story. He's also written as the most generic, one-bit "Nord" I've ever seen. So Yorick can't have a place in the new Shadow Isle syet, but this is what Olaf's role in the world is? Generic "Yarr glory of death" viking? We just got done expanding the "Yarr i'ma pirate" character to be something more than that, too...
Speaking of the Scourge, when is he going to make his move? The readers all know he's alive, and I think this is what we're all waiting for when we hear "Bilgewater", really. This Harrowing thing is pretty much a mini-game like the Balance team folks like to talk about. I don't care about smashing two cool things together if we're not going to get some progress out of it. And I thought Riot had said they weren't going to do the Black Mist every year?
Honestly I was really hype to see Lucian turn up but not like this. Please f'king kill that Thresh bastard! Prove to everyone that the world can change in BIG ways. ** 3) Just write a book, please.**
This whole initiative kind of seems like a double-edged sword now, as I like the effort to move the world but I don't want to see "Bilgewater pt. 3; the one with Gangplank", at that point I'd rather be seeing other parts of League's world continued, concluded, or at least put on a satisfying course.
But there are also too many loose-ends and it will take forever to get all of this stuff done, without a focused literary effort. Also think about the profit!! :^) ** 4) Bilgewater pt. 2; the one with Illaoi**
That's where I'm at right now. I just want to learn about Illaoi and am not very hopeful for the rest of this chapter. I certainly don't give a flying axe about Olaf if he's going to be written like this.
