Putting the Legends in the League

No, this isn't a BWAH thread [Bitch, Whine And Hate].

I noticed that with recent champions, Riot's been leaning further in the direction of including... well, legends. Characters that may or may not actually exist in the story's world, and their background description is mythological. It started with Braum, and then you had Bard, Rek'Sai, Kalista, Tahm Kench, and now whatever the hell the new champion is, and there were hints of this with Mordekaiser, Thresh, Hecarim, Aatrox, Nocturne, Brand, Fiddlesticks, Ahri, Elise, Zyra, Lulu and Yorick.

It's a lot better than stealing champions from other worlds to fight battles for you.

Anyone remember how old Master Yi is?

I don't like it, really. I think most of them really do need to be grounded in something close to reality for the mythological lores to hold their impact.

To be technical, Nasus and Renekton got worked back into the standard lore, rather than being otherworldly creatures, or galactic overlords or whatever else they were.

I know, but until their story rework, they were from another planet or realm of existence before the Institute of War basically kidnapped them. And Master Yi, before his story rework, was over a thousand years old.

The first gen story stuff was really freaking stupid is what I'm getting at.

Watch out when saying such things especially in this forum, many people don't like hearing this kind of quotes about old lore. :S

The whole batch does in fact need a relaunch as far as lore goes, which I believe Riot is in fact working on, but the way they're building the new characters into the game is just fantastic.

Especially the most abysmal of lore failures in my mind is Rammus. The summary of his lore is as follows "For some reason an armadillo left it's normal routine and started roaming. He found a maze with a light at the center, touched the light and woke up completely sentient and with armor, now he's an armordillo. Then in the process of trying to find similar creatures he found the league of legends."

I don't like being overly harsh towards people who worked on creating content, but the lack of depth in that lore is typical of 4th grade creative writing assignments.

I recon they have an idea of where Rammus stands in the overall context of things, but yeah it's lacking. I mean hell, they made Twitch a folk legend of Zaun, Rammus probably just suffers from the whole year long tech debacle of doom.

Still holding out that he's actually an Ascended though. Perhaps even the first.

Twitch isn't exactly a folk legend. His new lore is a Zaun report, so he's basically confirmed to exist. Compare it to Braum, who is told as a folk tale to a little kid in a fashion similar to the story of Paul Bunyan, and the context implies that Braum is either very old, dead, or ageless.

It's a vague criteria for what counts as a legend. I can't spell it out so cleanly; I just intuitively know who is or isn't a legend. And Twitch isn't one of them.

In the context of Zaun though all they have are witness statements to go on; there's actually very little evidence to support Twitch's existence beyond that. He's almost like a cryptid.

Also a legend by the dictionary definition essentially boils down to a famous/infamous individual. So Twitch does count in that sense.

I do believe Riot's in the process of doing that, and has been going as far back as at least Nami or Vi, with possible hints of it from even earlier, but they screwed themselves over by announcing it too early, so now a lot of peoples' lores are up in the air until they bring out more story, and I don't know when that will be.
