Lore potential of new client -would the new infrastructure allow the distribution of other software?
You know, such as a tiny version of "Steam" for small games Riot makes to tell their lore in and that can be bought with RP (or are free, I don't care what Riot's policies are with this). As we all know, MOBAs are a horrible genre for keeping lore going, the gameplay itself being heavily disjointed from the world. So it's often fun as a wacky "Super Smash Brawls: Runeterra Edition", but not as a genuine method to really deliver narrative. I mean, what can you even do? At best you have some voicelines that sound interesting the first time you hear it, but then 100 games later none cares about it anyways.
Nono, narration, even in the broad sense of Henry Jenkins "Narrative Archticture", has a certain linearity to it mostly given to the progress of time. A story needs to start at some point and it needs to end at some point. What aspect the reader of it sees is a whole other matter, but with the MOBA the basics are completly thrown over: Summoner's Rift is effectively in an effective time loop. Nothing starts here, and nothing ever ends there. It's like the absolutely most impossible enviorment for any sort of ambitious storytelling.
And while I do love the new stories on the Universe page (special credit for the Orrn legends, those were awesome!), Riot first and formost is a game development studio, and this is where and how their story should be presented. It wouldn't even be that crazy to pull off, no one is expecting them to invent the wheel anew or to craft 40-hour long experiences. As long as it is well made and the writing is good it doesn't really matter if the mechanics of that hypothetical metroidvania game they could make for Ezreal's lore are anything new in the gaming world. People wanna have Ezreal jump around Piltover as a kid, follow him into the ruins when he tried to figure out what happened to his parents, they want to get that awesome powerup that is the gauntlet, and then some bossfights with awesome dialogue. As you can see, the bar is not really that high in terms of inventiveness, more in writers and artist knowing their craft.
So my question is: could the new client theoretically do this? It would be awesome , that's for sure... or do we need to wait another seven seasons for a client renewal before that is even remotely possible?
