So is what Nami has in front of her upper body boobs or some sort of air-bladder as it is suggested in this comic?

For a fish-species to have such an body-part it would be weird, as they are not mammals and the use of an air bladder to easily regulate diving processes while swimming seems logical (It would function like this: blow it up -> get lighter -> rise / or release air -> gain weight -> sink). It would make sense for a species that spends 99% of its life underwater to have adapted like this.

However, we also know that the vastayan come from an ancient union of humans and aetherical shapeshifters, so we never know how big the human influence is on this - and so there is the chance that what we are talking about is not an air bladder but indeed fish-boobs.

So what of the two is it. Or is ot both?

I know the question is silly, but for some reason I REALLY NEED TO KNOW. Some people are kept awake at night by questions about existence and philosophy, and I wonder if one of my favourite champions has boobs or not. Not sure how weird my brain is, but hey what can you do about it?

they are boobs. marai are vastayah, vastayah are human/animal hybrids. the human part is mammal, therefore the fish people are atleast part mammal, and that means that they can be breasts without any logical fallacy. Occam's razor, they look like breasts, they are probably breasts.

Hell you can even take the fact that her tail fin makes it seem like she's also part aquatic mammal, which again gives credence to the idea that they're breasts.

Hmm the thing is tho: most aquatic mammals, like dolphins and whales have to resurface regulary for air, yet from the impression I got, the Marai seem to be completly fine without coming up every few minutes and staying underwater for most of their life. I'm not sure if the classification as "aquatic mammal" would be truly correct here.

Aye but she's not just an aquatic mammal. Remember that Xayah and Rakan have the features of humans, birds and foxes. The Marai could have the traits of humans, fish and dolphins or something.

Is it known how Marai breathe? Like does Nami have gills she uses and can close up on land? Or does she just keep some water bubbles tucked around her gills? Or is it just nose breathing on land?

Seems like weird and ineffective location for air bladders, considering a humanoid body's weight distribution. Around the hips or waist would be more realistic.

Dunno, but we usually measure out weight based on the fact of a) having legs and b) not living underwater where everything is a bit lighter. We know too little about how much her tail weights and so on to draw conclusions about stuff like that.

Actually, point b is a known factor based on human biology related to competitive swimming. The human body is relatively poorly suited for swimming due, in part, to our lungs' location, making our bottom portion very non-buoyant relative to our upper body.

Preferably, an aquatic creature would have any sort of air bladder located close to its center of mass, or have a number of small air bladders spread evenly throughout the body. Having her breasts be air bladders (or, at least, the only air bladders) would be impractical on many accounts, since they would leave her extremely unbalanced - they are not only on her upper body, but also on the front of her body. That would make it extremely difficult for her to swim, since they would pull her upright and on her back.

And he might even have a point. I mean, some birds have part of their lungs spread into their wings for example (because they need more air when they fly, so with every flap of wings they breathe). Wouldn't be weird if she had other, internal air bladders. And where would it be more pratical where it also doubles as some sort of cushion when sitting down? ^^

So the functionality of the lungs has kinda expanded to a nearby body-part over the course of magical-influenced evolution? Yes indeed, that would make sense. The only question is now if the original functionality of a boob is still present or if the shape is just misleading.

Vastayan's are magic, so in that assumption real biology isn't a concern. They have boobs for the sake of resembling humans.

Boobs make no sense on a fish, but I think when it comes to the design team and boobs, they don't really care. Morello stated it a few years ago even.

There's a difference between having logic in a fantasy world, and wanting all aspects of real world logic to apply. Plus, Nami's race has been described as mermadic. No one ever questions why Ariel had breasts.

Because Ariel was from a cheesy fairy tale (if you look for depht and explanations in here you#re totally wrong), which again had that had the "siren"-mythology as basis, which mostly paints mermaid as evil ocean spirits that only look human to bait male sailors into the waters - or at least close enough so they could grab and drown them. Their human appearance is only an illsuion mostly and has no other function apart from baiting in prey.

Disney just took that, dumbed it down for kids and make it family friendly (plus typical princess-storyline, you gotta sell all that toys somehow to parents who's daughters just wont shut up until they get it).

However, Disney was foing that for random kiddie-movie and was not attempting elaborate world building that has actual depth.

Anything can have depth. It's a matter/manner of perspective. As I said, there's having logic in a fantasy world, and wanting to apply all aspects of real world logic to a fantasy world. Magic is usually opposite to science for a reason.

While I agree that a fantasy setting doesn't have to explain everything in a pseudo-logical way (Keep in mind: we are still talking about stuff that doesn't exist. But as long as it sounds kinda plausible, I'm pleased), but I prefer if the author tries to do so.

I prefer if the world someone creates follows rules. He can make up his rules all by himself, but at least give it some. It is just.... lazy if you state stuff like "How is that possible? Well, magic!". Even magic can have a structure you are following and being consistent.

I think that it's simply due to their biological relation to humans, which is a lot better than just fish boobs for the sake of fish boobs.

Along with that, it's possible they are vestigial figures from their human heritage, just like humans have tails in their bones or how some whales have feet.
