I think Riot is secretly ashamed of Aatrox and that's why he never gets the love he needs

It's like that weird dark and edgy OC you once made and you thought was suuuuuuuuper cool and serious when you were 13 and are now totally embarassed by it, but in this case the OC has a small but potentially really vocal fanbase, so outright deleting it is not possible and instead you just let it rot somewhere in a dark corner and hope it will be forgotten soon so that you can rework it into something completly new when no one is looking.

I feel bad for the poor guy tho - maybe if we had some more complexity to the Darkin they might appear less like "demonic edgelords"... pokes at the current lore writers Guys, are the Darkin even still a thing?

They just decided that he's gonna get a proper rework once the diver update becomes a thing and ignore him until then.

That's only in terms of gameplay tho, but even in lore he stands completly isolated. And not in the Zyra "anomaly character" kind of way, but rather "here is a big thing that is SUPER relevant to what goes on behind the regular-human-events" - and yet we get absolutely nothing to expand there. It's not like we didn't have enough opportunities for it in the last... almost four years now (yes it's that long, Aatrox was released 2013).

Looks like a discarded character to me sadly...

There are several champions still waiting for lore. Sometimes a VGU comes with a lore update as well.

There are many champs who still need lore updates. Just because Aatrox had an influence on the history doesn't mean that he'll get a special treatment.

And he is just not part of any faction in a time where riot focuses mostly on the faction-related champions.
