What Made What Was Being Trapped in Varus' Temple?

I know it says an ancient pit of corruption, but what caused the corruption? What being was so powerful as to leave a mark on Ionia that the elders feared would make all of Ionia go dark by itself? It doesn't seem Void since Varus' corruption from it doesn't give him a too Void-like appearance when compared to Malzahar and Kassadin. Sure, it's purple, but it just doesn't seem Void. Void is usually plasma-like corruption and electricity, this is flames and rock-like substance. What could have touched down on Ionia and was so powerful that it's footprint could engulf Ionia in darkness?

I could imagine it being Darkin related.

I mean Aatrox has a living sword and Varus has a living bow,so it could be that darkins either corrupt existing weapons or "grow" them out of their bodies(we don't know if the bow of Varus is a corrupted version of his previous one or if it grew out of the corruption). Not to mention that tryndamere seemingly gained some power from aatrox.

Though it could be just as well a void related thing or really anything else,after all his lore is pretty outdated.

Was it not Syndra? That's just what I always assumed, considering she was raised in a temple or something. And that is just what Varus was told, that it was a pit of corruption or something. Never really thought about it.

Eh, Syndra's lore says she was taught inside her temple by elders, but Varus I believe was alone inside the temple. Plus Syndra lifted her temple into the sky, so I doubt it's the same. Also, Syndra's magic doesn't create flames or corrupts to my knowledge. I could easily see them making this what it is in the next lore though since Varus and Syndra are kind of distant from the rest of the Ionian cast.

And because roughly 50% of LoL is purple, it could be just about anything.

Isn't his skeleton currently on the shadow isles? His skull was on the shadow isles and his minions brought the rest to it,so that they could revive him.

That was just his skull which btw is heavily hinted at being the source of corruption that drove Thresh Insane

His bones last known resting place was Noxus some 2000years ago

No they need his full skeleton

His skeleton needed to be complete in order for his resurrection to be enacted,

And his lore says that the reason why it took his men so long to revive him was because they simply didn't know where his skull was located. When the blessed isles turned into the shadow isles the liches were able to locate the skull and brought the rest of the skeleton to the isles to revive him

[...] Mordekaiser's servants were scattered to the corners of the world, seeking his lost skull, but were always unable to locate it. It seemed Mordekaiser's reign was truly over.

Yes my point is that it's plausible that a order of protectors could have been keeping the rest of his bones from those liches " it's plausible"

The thing is that in his lore it says that

Mordekaiser's liches made their way to the newly born Shadow

Meaning that Mordekaiser was revived shortly after the creation of the shadow isles,which in turn means that Mordekaiser was revived centuries ago. Meanwhile Varus was guarding the pit during the most recent noxian invasion,which is a rather recent event.

The only way how this could have been Mordes skeleton would be if someone ran towards the shadow isles,steals Mordes skeleton from there to seal it in ionia,but that sounds rather implausible considering that Morde seems to be out to conquer noxus,not Ionia.

The shadow isles are definetly ancient. I mean the Kingdom of the ruined king(which definetly fell after the creation of the shadow isles) was described as a forgotten one and a whole kingdom doesn't get forgotten in a few years.

Meanwhile the noxus-invasion affected a lot of ionian champions who are definetly not immortal,like Yasuo MasterYi Jhin etc.,so it is definetly a more recent event.

Not sure what that has anything to do with this. The only info that we have is that Noxus existed around the time of Jarvan 1 already,they were likely pretty raid-focused back then already

Referencing his outdated lore, specifically his League Judgement; I'd say there's a lot more to it.

Varus' tattoo on his right shoulder is a symbol of the Owl. The corruption itself seemingly stops out of respect for the Owl.. Specifically if you get a look at it in-game it pretty much looks like an eye. The eye is a symbol of the owl, ever watchful of the Pit of Pallus. I'd say whatever the corruption is / was, it was sealed by either the Owl, which is most likely a titular name, or at the very least a representative of the Owl itself. Perhaps they were both mortal bodies and were rivals. Whatever it may be, for now, what's left of Varus is safe as long as the corruption holds its begrudging respect until it decides Varus is no use to it anymore.

So, possibilities: Darkin, because of the similarity of seemingly living weapons between him and Aatrox Magic, Pallus may be an evil mage, who was into some weird things Void (Or Lulu), because purple Demon, Pallus could've been a demon similar to Tahm Kench, or the one binding/defeating said demon, and it left behind the goop.

So there are 3 famous temples in Ionia. One with Varus, one with Zed, one with Syndra. All 3 of them failed to prevent this corruption and all of 3 became immensely powerful due to this mysterious darkness. Now, why on earth would Ionian temples keep that dark/corrupting stuff anyway in temples?

Well, we got Varus guarding and containing a pit of corruption. Then we have the Kinkou Order keeping away a box which contained the forbidden shadow arts. Finally, we have the temple which contained Syndra herself.

You have a point to an extent. What is up with all these temples?
