What Made What Was Being Trapped in Varus' Temple?

I know it says an ancient pit of corruption, but what caused the corruption? What being was so powerful as to leave a mark on Ionia that the elders feared would make all of Ionia go dark by itself? It doesn't seem Void since Varus' corruption from it doesn't give him a too Void-like appearance when compared to Malzahar and Kassadin. Sure, it's purple, but it just doesn't seem Void. Void is usually plasma-like corruption and electricity, this is flames and rock-like substance. What could have touched down on Ionia and was so powerful that it's footprint could engulf Ionia in darkness?

I could imagine it being Darkin related.

I mean Aatrox has a living sword and Varus has a living bow,so it could be that darkins either corrupt existing weapons or "grow" them out of their bodies(we don't know if the bow of Varus is a corrupted version of his previous one or if it grew out of the corruption). Not to mention that tryndamere seemingly gained some power from aatrox.

Though it could be just as well a void related thing or really anything else,after all his lore is pretty outdated.

Referencing his outdated lore, specifically his League Judgement; I'd say there's a lot more to it.

Varus' tattoo on his right shoulder is a symbol of the Owl. The corruption itself seemingly stops out of respect for the Owl.. Specifically if you get a look at it in-game it pretty much looks like an eye. The eye is a symbol of the owl, ever watchful of the Pit of Pallus. I'd say whatever the corruption is / was, it was sealed by either the Owl, which is most likely a titular name, or at the very least a representative of the Owl itself. Perhaps they were both mortal bodies and were rivals. Whatever it may be, for now, what's left of Varus is safe as long as the corruption holds its begrudging respect until it decides Varus is no use to it anymore.

So, possibilities: Darkin, because of the similarity of seemingly living weapons between him and Aatrox Magic, Pallus may be an evil mage, who was into some weird things Void (Or Lulu), because purple Demon, Pallus could've been a demon similar to Tahm Kench, or the one binding/defeating said demon, and it left behind the goop.

Was it not Syndra? That's just what I always assumed, considering she was raised in a temple or something. And that is just what Varus was told, that it was a pit of corruption or something. Never really thought about it.

So there are 3 famous temples in Ionia. One with Varus, one with Zed, one with Syndra. All 3 of them failed to prevent this corruption and all of 3 became immensely powerful due to this mysterious darkness. Now, why on earth would Ionian temples keep that dark/corrupting stuff anyway in temples?
