Why We Like Galio (and Why New Galio Doesn't Live Up to Him)

This is meant to be a collection of my constructive criticisms concerning the Galio VGU. This is not meant to be me blindly hating something because "old good, new bad." I am legitimately putting down why I think Galio was cool and why I think the new Galio doesn't live up to that. And also some thoughts on the positive aspects of the VGU (because it's not all bad). I wanted to wait until all bio, story, etc were all released before making any judgments. I am also not judging inherent quality like graphical fidelity, execution, etc, as all of this is top notch and not the focus of this post.

Gameplay

First, I'll get the gameplay out of the way. I intend to focus more on the visual and story aspects of Galio's character since I really don't play Galio all that often. I enjoy him more as a character. That said, I did want to touch on it briefly. Old Galio was really fun, and a nice change of pace mid lane to counter magic-heavy teams. His ult was very fun to execute and even though I didn't play him in normals all that often, I was always excited to nab him in an ARAM. The new kit looks like even more my speed, a tanky initiator meant to function in many roles and can peel too. My biggest concern is the overlap with Shen's kit; Galio just seems like he has a really similar kit to Shen but does everything better (AOE taunt on basic ability, global ally teleport, etc). He does seem like he might be overtuned as well.

Overall though, I like the direction the gameplay team went with him. I think generally the folks on Gameplay do a great job of keeping the feel of a Champion's kit but updating it and coming up with something fun (with some exceptions, but this isn't the time or place for that).

Lore

Here we come to the part that old Galio was much stronger at. A quick synopsis of old Galio lore: the sculptor Durand made statues for many places all over Demacia, imbuing them with magic and bringing them to life in order to protect the various towns and villages. Galio was his magnum opus, and he was tasked with protecting the creator himself. Noxus sends elite assassins after Durand, of course, and Galio fails to protect him. Utterly devastated, he sits there for hundreds of years at the site of Durand's death, little more than a statue. He is finally stirred to fight for Demacia again when a little Yordle Poppy unknowingly inspires him with her determination.

New Galio lore has little to nothing to do with this story. A brief summary: proto-Demacians discover a material that can resist magic effectively. They build their city walls from the stuff, but it is little help in battles abroad. They task sculptor Durand with creating a statue to bring with their armies, protecting from magic and inspiring the troops. The magic that the stone absorbs allows Galio to become sentient, but he remains in a dormant state without the presence of enemy magic, only springing to life every couple of centuries. This gives a bittersweet edge to the tale, as Galio is enthusiastic to be able to fight and help the Demacians he holds dear, but his own actions cut short his brief bout of movement by killing the magic that brings him to life.

Giving credit where credit is due, the new backstory does a great job of incorporating Galio's "magic tank" fantasy into his bio. I really like the descriptions of the material he is made from and I think it adds a lot. It's one of the only things that makes sense to add, and doesn't completely ignore Galio's original story.

I can't say the same for the rest of it. They pretty much took the idea "protective statue" and the name "Galio" and that's pretty much all that's left. While old Galio's story is by no means flawless, it was a lot more personal, while also incorporating his Demacian patriotism (although admittedly, his Demacian roots needed fleshing out). New Galio's lore tells us over and over how much he holds these people dear, even though he can't move or interact with them, and even though these people often live and die without ever knowing Galio is sentient. He still wants to protect them. It was a sad thing that he couldn't protect all these people because he couldn't move. That's all well and good, but old Galio lore didn't have to tell us. We just got it. Galio was protecting the man whose work was essential to keeping Demacia safe. This was very important to all of Demacia. But it's also important to Galio himself on a personal level. He's protecting his creator, essentially his parent, and failing that is a huge loss emotionally for Galio as well as for Demacia as a whole. There's a reason Uncle Ben dies and Batman's parents are dead; this is a huge factor in a hero's character development. Heroes need a call to action, a raison d'etre, and a lot of the time the death of someone integral to the hero's history is what kicks off their journey as a character. They know what happens when they fail, the stakes are high, and they owe to that person's memory to continue their work.

New Galio helps the greater whole of Demacia, but has literally zero personal connections. Durand is little more than a footnote in New Galio's bio. With old Galio, we had both. We had the importance of greater good, and we also had importance on a more personal level.

Personality

The primary mood of Galio's tale is definitely sadness. All his original lines (especially their delivery) and actions reflect his melancholic backstory. Galio is a Demacian, through and through, but you can tell from his voice that he doesn't like fighting, he doesn't like the consequences. He does what's needed to protect innocents, because he knows all too well the cost if he fails. He's one of the few Champions--let alone Demacian Champions--that is not loud and boisterous and extremely confident. He's confident, but reserved. Patriotic, but not rambunctious. He's the Sentinel's Sorrow.

New Galio is pretty much nothing like this. I will admit that there is a certain air of bittersweetness to his lines knowing his backstory, but this has the unfortunate side effect of making him act absolutely nothing like Galio. There's nothing wrong with champs like Braum or Draven who are over-the-top and enthusiastic about fighting. But that's not Galio. He's just not one of those characters and I for one like seeing a variety of views and personalities in our Champions. This subtle change in his backstory has made him feel unfamiliar, which is a big no-no for VGUs. If they kept nothing but Galio's melancholic personality, I might not be compelled to write this way too long post. However, this Galio is nothing like old Galio, and he doesn't evoke any feelings of old Galio. If a VGU does nothing but evoke the feeling of the original champion, then it can at least claim some success. With Galio's VGU, this is not the case.

Visual Design

I won't spend too much time here, as I think this is much more objective and honestly are more minor complaints.

https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/YPkgrKq9J9zGLXdhtss-v12P3vY=/640x0/filters:no_upscale()/i.imgur.com/geoaV8P.jpg

In Riot's insights into designing Galio, they state that Gargoyles are little more than fancy rain spouts. They completely missed the point. Gargoyles are indeed just really fancy ways to drain water, but they represent a way to ward off evil spirits and protect the building. In this way, Galio is a gargoyle.

However, gargoyles are not very Demacian. Fair enough, they wanted Galio to look more heroic and less monstrous to suit the rest of the Demacian Champions. Despite this logical reason, I disagree with the visuals they produced. The number one thing that bothers me is his color scheme; as in, where's all the color? Ignoring the fact that they threw out Galio's original colors entirely, there's just nothing appealing to look at. It's all this blinding white, with a few spurts of gold to mercifully break it up. Why not add some more blue, another common Demacian color?

Even ignoring all this, why is he so big? He wasn't called the Colossus before so this is entirely an added element to his character. The splash art makes it extremely clear that he towers over everything, he's even crushing somebody's house. Riot's Galio Insights specifically state he is "mountain-sized". It seems rather difficult to defend people without crushing them at that size. This is not only ridiculous, but doesn't even make sense in the context of this new story. Demacia wanted a statue they can take with them to war as protection. Isn't something this big way too cumbersome? If it's going to be this big, why not make it a wheel or a cart so it's easier to transport? If Riot wanted to make Galio big, by all means make him big, but maybe try making him Optimus Prime-sized and not Godzilla levels of huge. It feels like Riot got overzealous with this idea of "Colossus" and didn't stop to think it all the way through.

His overall design is just sort of bland. He's little more than a man-shaped statue. It makes me wonder what happened to all of these concepts?

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8_AhmOSSk5M/WMrUFaW7HCI/AAAAAAAAgIA/ffYilATMbfELFv8BHT-RO1iiR575J53uwCLcB/s640/LOL_CMS_55_Article_01.jpg

Why weren't some of these designs implemented? They could have added some element of beast to him without looking completely monstrous. I also see more opportunities for varied color in this concept art as well.

His wings were cleverly changed, though, to resemble the Demacia symbol. This is one design element I can get behind. As for the rest, it's mostly just dull.

Conclusion

I realize that this post will likely get lost to the depths of obscurity or maybe get downvoted immediately or otherwise go unread. It's also very unlikely anything about Galio--particularly his lore and personality--will change in accordance with this post or any others like it. I mostly post this to try and convey how VGUs ought to be handled, in the hopes that someone will read and take it to heart, maybe think about it a little. These are BIG changes and while I expect BIG changes for any given VGU, there has to be some elements of the old character for fans to gravitate towards. I don't want all this wasted potential in these half-baked stories to just get dumpstered, I want to see them develop and grow. While reading the Champ Insight, it became clear to me that Riot wanted to make the Colossus, and not the Sentinel's Sorrow. I know their intentions are good and they just want to give players a cool character, but unlike a brand new champion, there is a history the developers are expected to draw from. I think Gameplay is really good at zeroing in on the important and fun elements of an outdated Champion's kit and redesigning them based around it. Lore and visuals have a worse track record, and really need to learn from their experiences.

In conclusion, old Galio was refreshing in how melancholic and purposeful he was in his service to Demacia. His story had way more elements to relate to and to expand not only the character Galio but also the world of Runeterra. While new Galio has some decent elements, overall he doesn't capture the feeling I expected from a champion with the name "Galio".

Thanks for reading and feel free to discuss :)

Edit: Thanks for all the great discussion! I have posted another companion piece of sorts to this, doing a similar analysis of how effective the VGU was for Sion, and doing some light comparisons to Galio. If you're interested, feel free to discuss Sion over there!

I like the new Galio bounds better tbh, but I'll upvote and comment to promote this kind of discussion. Posts like this deserve attention over rageposts.

I agree. I completely feel like new Galio (while awesome) would have been better suited as a new champion.

Vier3/19/2017, 12:55:57 PM9 votes

Riot needs more diverse personalities and unique voice overs. I feel like voice overs these days are quantity over quality which is disappointing, (Elementalist Lux has a lot of voice over but is generic and lacks specific character taunts/jokes).

Galio also suffers from this how they try to "spice" up champion voice overs by adding an extreme amount of puns, making them savage/cocky and hero like. In that process the champion loses their "personality" and start to become similar. Kalista's voice over shows her pain and struggles but the updated Galio was not what I expected in both the voice actor and the lines.

Would also like to take this moment to mention how Lux's new voice over is out of character in my opinion which is not someone who had way too many skittles. What I imagined Lux to be was someone who knew a balance between being silly/serious. Most of these lines are just on the silly or Lulu side.

Finally I would like to thank you for this post. The boards need more posts like this that are well written and provide good topics for discussion, well done.

First of all, quality post. My compliments.

Gameplay: i share your exact sentiment about the overlap with shen. They are indeed too similar in what they bring to a team, gameplay issues included. Moreover, 3 aoe hard cc on a kit is simply too much. Reworked Galio looks terribly overloaded, but time will tell.

Appearence: past the initial shock, i have to admit that current galio really nails down the "demacian gargoyle" idea. His color palette strives far from the original, but fits well in his context. His size may seem exagerated, bit it suits perfectly what's he's supposed to be. Overall, the only negative thing i can say is that i deeply dislike riot's recent fear of "unsettling" designs. Poppy was supposed to be ugly af, turned out cute. Yorick was supposed to be a repulsive gravedigger, turned out a macho man. Galio, in this regard, could have been a bit more of a monster. In this specific case, however, the design desicion is understandable and justified, as Galio is utimately a symbol of Demacia's pride and thus can't reasonably have demonic appearences.

Personality: in this i am 100% with you. Why is he so cocky? Why he's so focused on punching stuff and battle? Why so many provocations, why so many puns? Honestly, this has nothing to do with old Galio's personality, which should have been kept in higher regard. Duty and remorse were his focal points, and now they're nowhere to be found. The living statue situation he's trapped in should be way more impactful on him, i feel like it's a missed opportunity. Maybe even worse, his attitude doesn't even fit in the Demacian culture; i'd expect him to be serious, dutiful and honorable in his approach to a battle.

I personally think that Riot here missed the mark in delivering Galio. While i understand how his gameplay and appearence are a reinterpretation to his previous self, his personality, simply put, has nothing in common with Galio.

I thought they were going to make every character unique in gameplay. But no. Fuck it. Lets give Ivern a better version of tibbers. Lets give Ryze a better version of Tahm's ult. Lets just rework a character so that he gets an ult which is exactly like Shen's except it is just better. I reaaly liked his old ultimate. I felt that with Galio's entire kit being somewhat lackluster, and his game changing ultimate being the only thing he is known for, they would at least keep it. But no, lets just put it in his e/w and make it the opposite of the shit we just gave Warwick.

I also really REALLY hate what they did to his character. First, just look at how big they made him. It is just stupid. You mentioned this but how the hell is he going to protect anybody? And who the hell is he even protecting against? How did one man finish this motherfucker in a lifetime? On a battlefield this would be so impractical to bring it along with your army. First of all, this guy is going to be slow as shit. unless he has his ingame ultimate in the actual lore. But then he would end the fucking world everytime he uses it since it would be like a meteor hitting the earth every single time. And how is he going to fight besides anybody? Like he is just going to step all over the people he is supposed to protect. He went from being this unique character to being a fucking Braum ripoff with a shittier personality. He's just too fucking confident. He is nothing like the old Galio. Old Galio was, like you described, this guy who was a Demacian but he did not shout it every single time like every other fucking Demacian champion. He just did his job and you felt a real character, although a bit undeveloped, when you played him. This is not Galio. Goodbye Friend item 3073 item 3073 Galio

Recuro3/19/2017, 7:32:22 PM6 votes

I actually like the new lore, not his personality though. I really think this rework missed the mark in almost every aspect though. Yeah it's a cool champ but it's so far from old Galio it's absurd. I'm just kinda sick of people saying it's good because old Galio had problems - of course he did but that doesn't mean delete everything and start over.

Grimm Howl3/19/2017, 3:43:59 AM6 votes

I like how Riot decided to make Galio more of a symbol of Demacia. Durand constructing him as a unified hybrid of a Demacian solider and their ebony wyvern mounts is a wonderful concept. I also agree though that some of the other thumbnailed concepts have a more striking silhouette compared to the Galio we received, but Riot has stated that it was for visual clarity which is acceptable.

Kinjishi3/20/2017, 10:01:19 PM5 votes

Fantastic post, Abiwon. Since Riot introduced him, New Galio has felt like an entirely different champ to me outside of the name. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

GreenLore3/19/2017, 10:37:37 AM5 votes

Gameplay: I too am worried about similarities to Shen, however while Galio is better in some aspects,he is worse in others(Shens ult is global, while Galios has only a big range and galio has only a magic shield that regenerates over time, wheras shen can get a shield in the midst of combat multiple times)

Lore: I agree that Galios personal loss is stronger in his old lore, but I feel like his old lore failed to establish the importance of the greater good for him. After all in the old lore,he never interacted much with anyone other than durand,so for him to suddenly decide to become a protector of Demacia felt kinda shallow(I know he likely did it,because thats what Durand was doing with his creations, but it still comes off as a bit forced) as if they just added this last bit of his lore, just because he needed a reason to join the league.

Personality: Overall I agree that his personality is pretty much nothing like the old one.(though such a big change in personality isn't a first,I mean just look at Sion) However I have to say I do like the new one more. The old one just felt a bit....bland.I mean his background isn't that bad,but his personality is simply not memorable. Heck you yourself seem to have unknowingly added your own headcanon here, because none of old Galios lines indicate that he did not like combat with lines like "preemptive strike","assault from above" or "Justice will be done". Regardless I can understand it if you feel that its still too far from what Galio was.

Design: Well you say they have failed to grasp what a Gargoyle is and while Galio does look atypical for a gargoyle,he is actually closer to what a Gargoyle is supposed to be,because new Galio is actually a statue that watches over others and that will come to live to protect the demacians, wheras old Galio was more like a gargoyle shaped Golem. Also the demacians needed to make him this big, because they needed a big lump of petricide on one place, otherwise its antimagic wouldn't be strong enough to act as a shield and his lore mentions that he is sitting on a moveable platform.(Him probably causing casualities on his own side is also not unusual considering that the demacians never wanted him to move and if he awakens he'll usually protect the demacians from things that would do much more harm otherwise)

I also have to say that while he is mostly white,he is far from bland, since even his mainly white body has lots of details(also old Galio only had 2 colors as well)

WickedCrow3/19/2017, 12:31:48 PM5 votes

I do wish they had added more blue to his base skin. Its a solid contrast to Noxus's red which is common amongst many of it's members. I am also kind of annoyed with Riot making these colossus sized champs that just get shrunk down for gameplay purposes. It is okay once in a while, but Malphite, Rek'Sai, and now Galio alongside a few others I probably missed, its just awkward. Also, wouldn't it make more sense to develop several smaller statutes rather than one absurdly massive one? Even like 20-30 10ft tall statutes would be more effective I would think.

As for his personality, I like the explanation that he is happy to battle and fight to protect those he loves, so I can understand some of the eagerness. At the same time, it is kind of a weird miss-match because he should realize that his actions are shorten his "lifespan" each time he fights. I feel that a person who is repeatedly thrust from life to stasis over the course of centuries would eventually be withered down mentally, from the friends he has lost to those he couldn't protect, alongside numerous other issues. Its a much more somber story than what Galio's VO lives up to.

Smitty Manjensen3/19/2017, 1:35:31 PM5 votes

"old galio was really fun" That's were you are wrong kiddo. Galio was dubbed as the most boring champion for a reason, the new one is miles better in terms of gameplay. The lore and visual I haven't read nor do I care.

YFisfabulousBRUH3/19/2017, 3:58:43 PM5 votes

Holy shit all my concerns summed up in one post than you so much.

I also hate the fact that they made him sound so much like draven, but most of my unhappiness is in his visual design. Being so top heavy, he is for sure going to topple over when he wakes up. look at his arms dragging to his knees and the ridiculous wings. They also mentioned in the lore that he was dragged onto the battlefield. Judging by his size, i think it would be small talk for the enemy to just hail them with arrows when they're lugging galio to the battleground. Those wings look absolutely non functional (im sorry but i really hate how riot designs wings Anivia Morgana Kayle ) not to mention galio was one of the few actually flying champions apart from kayle and anivia and they took that away.

As for durand completely finishing galio in 2 years. HA NICE JOKE. David by michelangelo took 3 years to finish, and he was 17 feet tall. Galio in his splash is 15.5 farmers tall, and lets say an average farmer is 5 foot. So galio would be 77.5 foot tall, which would require 13 years to finish, and not to mention his width. Im just really pissed with this VGU and how they completely demolished his identity.

VivaLaKitten3/19/2017, 3:42:12 PM4 votes

Galio old lore a magnum opus in his designer's eyes, yet he failed to protect him, his only job however he was inspired to keep fighting, no matter what

perfect :D

new lore

oh yeah, he's a giant magical rock . . . nothing much else . . .

why couldn't you have kept the old lore again? hit kit even fit the old lore perfect he can shield his allies, and ult to keep enemies from attacking them

Boop Daddy 3/19/2017, 6:04:04 PM4 votes

Old Galio's kit meshed pretty well with my favorite type of tactics. Observe, wait, and strike at the right moment - which also felt like how Galio was as a character. You wait out damage with your W, you poke with Q, and you deceive with E. The movement speed and positioning threw people off, at least in low elos. And my favorite - whittling people down (especially zeds) to 1/3 hp, then going in for the kill. Q - Flash - Ult - Ignite - W - E. Trap them before the Q lands, W to empower your ult damage, E to press the attack or disengage if ganks. Galio was actually pretty fun for me. I don't mind the new kit. It certainly...fits the new champion's identity? The taunt is good, the Q is alright. The dash is rather generic. I'm not fond of having to rely on teammate's positioning to have an effective ult cast. Or an ult at all.

I seriously wish they had kept the Durand situation intact. Not sure why they decided to go this route. They could have easily made Durand a closet mage, make Galio out of antimagic stone still, scale back the ridiculous size so that the Sion rivalry has some smidgen of credibility, and kept the tragedy of Galio failing to protect his master. As a sentient golem, he'd still be the symbol of demacia, yadayada, and as the last of Durand's magic fades away, so too does Galio's activity. blahblahblah, Galio watches the gates of Demacia, they still use him as an antimagic bulwark, you get the point? There was no reason for them to eradicate the most pivotal plot point of Galio's character.

Actual question here, does anyone remember them asking what people liked about Galio? I remember some vague survey about gatekeeper, and that's literally it. It's like they spitballed it with this rework. There's very little source material here and that's upsetting.

Placentas3/19/2017, 3:10:42 PM4 votes

I 100% prefer the new Galio over the old in gameplay and especially lore.

Galio's creator being killed in the old lore is so bland. Cool, he lost his parental figure, much like many other champions in the league. Not that interesting to me and this is from someone who has lost one of their parents.

A creature that accidentally came to life, now has consciousness he can't fully express and enjoy and is always having philosophical thoughts and made up of anti-magic material, that's a lot more interesting to me.

Arkilusal3/19/2017, 5:00:46 PM3 votes

I'm honestly torn as to the Galio change. The issue for me is frankly, the old Galio...Didn't appeal to me. It seemed kind of awkward, seeing this big guy with wings seeming to strain against his bulk, the massive arms but small legs that lent him an appearance not unlike a gorilla...Wasn't fond of it. That said, while I certainly LIKE new Galio's appearance and overall attitude more, I kind of have to agree with a few of your points. I thought the new lore mentioned a cart that the army used to lug him around, but well... To take a note out of the developer blog, they said it themselves, they were thinking 'Demacian Statue of Liberty.' Thing is, our statue of liberty is like, upwards of 300 feet tall if I recall correctly, and I can only imagine how heavy that thing is. It kind of gets worse in Galio's case, since he's not only that huge and heavy but Demacia doesn't have engines beyond simple manpower/wyvernpower. Admittedly, we don't know Galio's actual weight, Demacia has wyverns which might be bigger/stronger than our horses, and this is a magic world so who knows what other physics changes there are in play. Personally...I'm kind of feeling like they traded a niche for a general-appeal character, and the niche's fans aren't happy, but as someone who wasn't a galio fan prior to this rework (and tbh, I'd call myself a bandwagoner if I did pick up new Galio.), I do think I personally like new Galio much more than the old. Instead of an awkwardly flying boulder, we have a mighty Colossus! But I think I do understand how this rework feels like you've lost something special...And if I don't, come see me when the Eve Rework arrives.

Voidzilla3/19/2017, 10:02:10 PM3 votes

I'll admit I was far from an avid Galio fan, but if it's worth anything I still have some opinions of him.

I have mixed feelings about this new Galio.

Gameplay: Seeing as how this post is more about his story and character, I'll try to keep my opinions on his gameplay brief. In terms of gameplay, I agree with you in the fact that he no longer looks distinct, and rather just seems like a variation of Shen or Malphite (I've yet to play as, with, or against him, so take this with a grain of salt). That said, there was a fan concept of a Galio rework a couple years back that I think did a fantastic job of analyzing his gameplay and creating something unique. The link: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/wE6eOiim-champion-rework-concept-galio-the-eternal-sentinel I know Galio's VGU guys said they did try a "tower-sitter" type kit that in reality wasn't really compelling, but it'd at least have looked more distinct and pay better homage to his gargoyle roots.

Lore: I'll also admit and say Galio's old lore wasn't bad, and indeed was very personal. However, I actually quite like this new one better. Old Galio had more or less got over his primary struggle; it was talking more about his history rather than his current status. He _was _ created to protect Durand, he was saddened when he failed to do so, he was inspired when Poppy just so happened to pass by him. That's all well and good, but new Galio has an ongoing story rather than one that's basically completed already. New Galio continues to struggle with the inability to protect people as he wishes. Sure, it might not be as personal as the relationship he had with his creator, but I think it's all the more tragic when he can't remember the people he loves, seeing them continually "replaced" by a newer generation.

New Galio's tragedy is that he can't form lasting bonds. You cite Spiderman and Batman as superheroes with emotional depth, so I'll bring up the Tenth Doctor from the show "Doctor Who". One of the saddest things about that protagonist is that, because he's effectively immortal, he has to watch as the people he loves wither away while he's forced to live on. It makes him fight harder because he knows his time with them is finite, and so he'll do what he can to make sure those moments can last. And not only that, but the Doctor makes sure that those moments are memorable so that when he's once again faced with loneliness he's not completely crushed by depression. That's something I see in new Galio. He's lively in his moments of life because he knows he has to make the most out of the short time he has, not only in the ability to move but the ability to inspire the people he protects. He has only brief windows to establish a bond, so he'll pour his heart into every second of it. That's his "call to action"; those are his stakes. Also is the fact that when a traditional superheroes parents die, it's not only the loss of their loved ones, but the fact that they're faced with mortality. Galio is immortal, or at least has an extremely long lifespan, so the same emotional complexities that affect us humans when we're faced with death won't necessarily be the same for him. Tragedy shouldn't be cookie-cutter dilemmas in that the same exact problems effect everyone the same exact ways. When thinking of a hero's conflicts, one has to take into consideration who, what, and why they are.

Personality: I think I touched upon this in the previous section, but I'll reiterate a say the reason Galio comes off as so lively is because he's making the most out of his moments of life. Sure, it's not much like old Galio, but comparing the old and new voicelines, new Galio has more than old Galio. Old Galio's quotes were basically just somber and determined. In truth, they weren't complex, but rather one-tracked. At least with the new voiceover we see different shades of Galio's character. He still retains those somber and determined lines, but it's mixed with boisterous and energetic ones. Both are fitting for his new character, which go beyond just "a sorrowful sentinel" and attempt to explore other aspects of who and what he is.

Visual Design: When I first saw new Galio, I was surprised by how much they changed his design. I think it's already been touched upon why a traditional gargoyle wouldn't really work, especially for Demacia, so I won't go on about that, and instead try to address specifically your points.

In terms of color, yes, they do look rather bland. Although a giant marble-esque statue clad in gold does look quite nice and very Demacian, I agree in that it could've been shaken up with some blue streaks or orange glowing eyes. This game has quite a bit of color to it, and it just seems a little odd how monochromatic Galio is.

I think his size is based on Rio trying to mix up the "gargoyle" trope. Instead of Galio being on top of or a part of a building, he _is _ the building. When he looks down, it's not because he's on his perch, but because of how big he is. And you have to remember, Durand didn't intend for Galio to come to life and start stomping around. He was an artist the Demacian military hired, and Durand probably wanted to make something that everyone - allies and enemies alike - see and stare in awe of. Plus, I imagine Durand is a little abstract and grandiose, hence why he didn't just make a simple shield. As an artist, he wanted to create something people would admire, but probably forgot to consider how practical it would be. As someone who's big on character design, I'll say that's a great aspect of new Galio. Visual design should tell a story unto itself, not only about the character but the things around them too. Galio's size and grand appearance actually tell us something about his creator as well. Through this Galio, we can conclude a little more about what type of person Durand is beyond just "some artificer".

That all said, I too think some of the concept sketches were cool, and wished his current design implemented a little more of those as well (such as a the broader shoulder plates or the sculpting that look like some sort of robe draped over him). There would've been more opportunity to spice up the design with some of those additions.

Conclusion: As I said though, I was never an avid Galio fan, so perhaps some or most of these points have missed something crucial about his old character. These are just personal thoughts from a general observer. I do see more in new Galio in terms of lore and character though. This is a Galio with an ongoing struggle that fits better into the world of Runeterra as a whole. He's a character with more complexity than just being a melancholic guardian. These are indeed big changes, and with big changes come big skepticism. I may disagree with some of your points, but I respect them, especially with how eloquently you conveyed them. In and of itself this is a great post commenting about VGUs in general.

Well-constructed and thought out post. As a huge fan of Galio both pre- and post-rework, I totally understand and agree with your sentiment (namely, the unnecessary shift in personality--"we wanted him to be like a wrestler"? what?!) but also welcome the new Galio with open arms. I only wish Riot had given his personality some more thought before 'locking it in' so to speak; I think the somber/melancholy/righteous tone suited him more, and being trapped in stasis for indefinite amounts of time doesn't necessarily entail being jolly once you're finally awake. That being said, I appreciate that they kept at least some bittersweetness in his lore, and his new visuals are amongst my favorite of the entire champion pool now.

Old Galio to me just didn't have a whole lot of appeal to me. He worked along the lines of being an anti-mage, while being a spell casting mage (who also was melee), some tank, and some support all in one. It just felt like a mess to me. His W only increased armor and MR, which used on him would increase his damage, but also would only ever heal him, even if you shielded an ally. E's bonus MS area didn't really feel that fitting to me to use, at least for a character like that, and his ult was probably the most iconic part of him that I can easily identify him as. Outside of URF and ARAM I saw no reason to pick this guy.

His lore on the other hand I can see why people like it, with the whole big responsibility/duty and personal connections view. Design wise.... I didn't really hate it, since he's suppose to be a gargoyle, but at the same time I just didn't really find it to appeal to me. Literally he was just gargoyle, nothing was really different or unique about him that set him apart from any other. Personality was pretty good I'll admit, having this sadness but sense of duty as well, but at the same time he constantly reminded me of Skarner (for having the same voice actor and tone) so it put me off a bit.

The new one, gameplay wise, I absolutely love! Still keeps the AoE taunt, feels more like a anti-mage tank and might actually start getting me to play mid again. Everything else.... kinda hit and miss (mostly miss). Lore wise he still has a sense of tragedy to him and wanting to protect but as you stated it heavily misses out on personal relations as in the old one, as well as conflicting with his personality a bit. Oh and his personality: I mostly hate it. It's like they took a character who sounded powerful and had wisdom and changed them into Demacia's version of Draven. Seriously, that's always what I think about when I hear Galio. He just sounds like a jock who loves to show off half of the time to everyone, leaving almost nothing of his old personality. And because of this it kinda contradicts his interaction with my main Shyvana, who before gave her advice to sooth her rage, but now with his new personality it just doesn't feel like it fits.

His new appearance is.....ok i guess. Idk I mean it does look very nice but holy shit his base color scheme is hideous! It's literally a white that's almost hard for me to look at with a small amount of gold for his wings and line detail. I'm extremely glad that he has multiple skins because I don't think I can play with the base version. Wings are interesting but looking through other commints I can agree, from a logical point of view, he would be top heavy. As for his change from gargoyle to Colossus, I guess Riot figured they wanted to make him more exciting by making him bigger and focus on the "Sentinel" part rather than try keeping him as just a gargoyle.

In short, he went from being that champ that I like lore wise and didn't like everywhere else to like gameplay wise and kinda hate everywhere else.
