He's probably still dead, having died protecting the hammer.

Calling it now.

What if he is actually alive living a perfectly comfortable life and financially supporting Poppy's quest to locate a hero?

I feel like that wouldn't be the case because his death was kinda critical to Poppy's direction in life originally. Maybe I'm totally wrong on this but right now my assumption is that Blomgrum (or whatever he's called now if they changed that name) died protecting the hammer, and Poppy took up the quest to find its true wielder after this.

A possibility, to be sure. However, we will not know until the full extent of her lore is released. I understand your position on the matter, as the death of an immediate family member is incredibly significant to an individual's development, and changing such a core aspect of her lore would be seriously frowned upon. The only reason I suspect the circumstances have changed is due to the fact Poppy's new lines give no inclination that she lost or father, or that she even has one. I understand the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but it strikes me as rather odd that such a terrible event goes unmentioned.

Unless Poppy hides her anguish incredibly well behind a facade of naivety and awkwardness.

Perhaps she is now an orphan, taken in by a Demacian family, which might explain her unflattering opinion of her own kind and the adoption of Demacian values.

I've got to agree with you here. If her dad died protecting the hammer then she doesn't reflect that at all. All her VO lines referring to the hammer are upbeat and perky. Nothing to suggest that she has mixed feelings about the hammer or its purpose. If I had to carry around a reminder of my fathers death, I don't think that I'd be that happy about it.
