I don't even know why he is a blacksmith if he feels that a smith hammer is the best weapon. He could create almost anything he wants to attack other champions with. This kind of makes me think less of him.

Just because a blacksmith can make a sword doesn't mean he knows how to use it.
Well... Jax doesn't need a real weapon and he can still kick your butt.
With Ornn though I think it's a case of using a weapon you're more skilled with. Not everyone can be Jax, and a smiths hammer is something he already has a lot of practice with using. Just seems more efficient to use it for crafting and combat, especially if he's more familiar with it then any other tool.
He's also a god, so he probably doesn't need any weapon at all to kick most people's asses.
If you are a demigod and you have two molten hammers that you've been seinging your entire life, would you trade them out for another weapon? I would assume those hammers are pretty dang special.
