I think I'd prefer the former since it leaves room for him to be potentially picked up again in the future; whereas the latter option would perhaps create too much overlap if two near-identical (or identical) characters both existed.

Aurum means gold. Aurelion may point to Aurum Leo like Golden Lion or even point to Leona directly. Sol means sun or sunlight. So the Golden Sun, the Golden Sunlight, or the Golden Lion of Sun.
That points to Mt. Targon and Leona in my opinion way too much. Plus we recently got Ionian Jhin.

Omega Squad Teemo is Post Valorian war, Spirit Guard Udyr I think was mastering his inner rage, Infernal Nasus I believe is him falling into the same state as Renekton. Ao Shin will probably live on as apart of legendary lore rather than direct lore itself.

If Aurelion turns out to be quite similar to Ao shin in terms of body structure,I could see them doing this. However if Aurelion turns out to be rather different(so not a chinese dragon),then I think they wouldn't do that,because it would create the demand for a chinese dragon just all over again.

Before you get triggered! and post the article. I did read it, Riot said they were having difficulty with an eastern dragon and said they would have released him if they could get a kit that wasn't random and lore that made sense. That aside they didn't say anything about not releasing him ever.
They said they were going to release a "New Dragon Champion" that is not Ao Shin and that is it.
It could be very well that we see Ao Shin later on if the New Dragon Champion does well and if they could get a compelling kit made for Ao Shin to be worth the time it would take to invest in fixing the movement of a serpentine dragon.

GreenLore1 votesThe thing is that even though Aurelion Sol evolved from Ao shin,doesn't mean that he'll cover the same things as Ao shin.
For example we can be pretty sure that Aurelion won't have storm powers and he might not even be a chinese dragon.
In the end though I think we should wait for Aurelion to be actually revealed before we can really judge that.
Kasyrgan1 votesI think that Aurelion won't be an eastern dragon (Mostly the name) Aurelion Sol is just a really western name (Sounds Latin) Sol means Sun in a lot of languages (Maybe he is a sky or sun dragon, not a storm dragon)
