New Lore for Varus... what an incredible letdown.

A frantic attempt to save a loved-one is such a weak motivation. It's not VARUS! Varus chose duty over his family! That was the whole point! He has to live with the pain of that choice.

Who gives a shit if he's gay or not (even though that was a drastic change from his old lore), why did literally everything about him have to be changed? His character now just seems uninteresting and really, really pointlessly convoluted. One of the memories he clung to was teaching his son to use a bow. Memories of his family. While whatever is possessing him consumes him, he uses the last of his power of will to fight for the vengeance he craves.

Now he's a weak, choppy, unbalanced combination of three rubber-banded-together personalities that he haven't even had a chance to get to know. Just boom, here is is lover and he died and is evil now.

What would have been stronger is if Varus' son carried him to the temple. Varus, unable to forgive himself, chooses hate and submits to the pit. Him doing it for a lover is a weaker motivation than him doing it for his family.

I used to love Varus as a character but with his new lore, I just can't stand how badly he was butchered so that someone could push some kind of agenda across using him as a vessel for some kind of pathetically weak storytelling.

This was not canon, there is no reference to his son and teaching him how to use a bow in the 1st iteration or when the the league was a thing. This is the issue with Fanon vs. Canon. While I love that people can make their own relationships and connections to the champions, they can make false and untrue statements and believe them to be fact.

The "duty over family" thing is a great trope and while it will be missed, it was very straightforward and even tho it could have been expanded on, this new story allows for so much more. Most of the paths have been set up already; the female darkin, the fiery red-headed woman in gold armour, the family of Val and, Darkin in Shurima. Not to mention this story finally allows LGBTQ+ players to finally feel as though they have some form of real representation (without having to be stereotypical (AoTFA Taric) or fanon). You may not agree with the last one but it is important and players want to be represented.

This is a Galio situation. Riot has taken the basic and most primal traits of Varus's old outdated lore and has transformed it into something that I would argue, is deep and gives the physical body of "Varus" more character (literally). The only thing I wish would have happened is more info on Kai and Val before they jumped right into it.

How the conversation probably went at Riot HQ:

"ya know, we aren't forceful enough with how political correct we are" "yeah, we need to show how politically correct we are" "I HAVE AN IDEA" "yes moneylover#127?" "no one cares about Varus' lore, lets make him gay!" everyone claps "but cant we just make a new cham-" "SHUT IT, THIS IDEA IS BRILLIANT!" "screw old champs no one cares about, EVERYTHING MUST BE UPDATED AND CHANGED" "FOR THE GREATER GOOD" "the greater good!"

Varus became a dark kin who is seeking vengeance for his race that died in the war. The people who revived him are gay, Varus himself isn't.
