The Shadow Isles are lacking a champion who is not just "evil" in appearance/personality

Just look at them, all evil (from our perspective) and dead. They just lack the variation other factions have.

In the Freljord you have evil witches and warlords, but also someone like Braum or Gragas. Demacia has the cheerful lightbulb of doom Lux who stands in total contrast to the likes of Garen or Fiora. Heck, even Noxus has more personality variation going on than the Isles with Draven. Ionia has quite a lot of personalities, from stoic ninjas, to clerics to batshit crazy psychopaths. And don't get me started about Targon... the aspects and Sol are clearly total opposites in terms of character. And Bilgewater has everything, from crazy pirates to tricksters to the happy tentacle priestress.

But I can understand how this is troublesome: how do you make an undead character that is possibly controlled by the Black Mist, into a "not completly evil" character?

I doubt there will be a single undead that is powerfull enough to directly fight against the Black Mist (apart from Mordekaiser who is Numero Uno.). However, there might be some who simply do not care about what the Black Mist or Mordekaiser want from them.

Kalista is not evil, read her lore. Maokai Seeks to cleanse the Shadow isles from it's curse.

The shadow isles are certainly one of the most evil factions in the game,if not the most evil one(as most of the void creatures seem to act based on instinct,so they aren't really any more evil than an animal),but its not like each and everyone of them is completely evil

Kalista is more neutral than anything else. If you were betrayed, then you can offer her your soul and if she accepts she'll kill the betrayer.Honestly she is more like a weapon than anything else.

Yorick also seems rather neutral just doing his job, though we don't know where the rework will take him.

Karthus really sees undeath as a blessing and honestly just wants to help you.Sure in the end you can say that he is evil for forcing his beliefs onto others(by literally killing them),but it is definetly a lighter shade of black.

Maokai and Kalista aren't really evil, and Maokai doesn't look evil as well

Have you ever read her judgement? I'm assuming not because lux is not a cheerful lightbulb, quite the opposite actually.

Even though he's not affiliated with the Isles the "protagonist" of that area of Runeterra is technically Maokai, considering his whole goal is to save it. He of course doesn't consider himself a part of that mess but for all intents and purposes he's the true good guy of the Isles as he's the only pre-ruination resident who's not a horrific undead bound by the mist. As grim as he is he's the only being we know of in Runeterra who's capable of actually fixing the problem.

So yeah even though he's not technically a Shadow Isles champion, he's still the hero of the island so to speak in that its salvation is his ultimate goal, and he's got more history and connections to the island than just about every other champion from there, being a spirit of the isles itself as opposed to a human resident or human who came to the island.

Thematically though it would make sense if the shadow isles was the only place where everyone was evil and united under one big evil ruler.

I've think you very much missed the point that people go to the Shadow Isles to gain power.

The residence that were there have been taken over. Everyone else either went there and traded their humanity to become something greater, or were taken by the mist.

The Shadow Isles' "Black Mist" doesn't have an equal who is a part of its faction, as all those associated are either being controlled by it, or gave everything to join it.

It has equals in the sense that Illaoi's god can challenge it, but that's a god.

I think Yorick should be this guy in his rework.
