It really only makes sense if Thresh was the only Dark Star skin being released and it was released last year along side Varus. You'd think the game mode coming out with Dark Star Ori and Kha skins would include those two or even all of the Dark Star skins.
Either way, as a Thresh player, it looks really fun and I can't wait to play it.
The game mode was made with Thresh's abilities in mind. Other champions wouldn't be able to feasibly participate, with maybe the exception of Orianna using Shockwave.

Thresh is a support champion. Dark star Thresh is a legendary skin, the game mode is obviously to spark interest in Thresh as a champion among the playerbase (who doesn't want to play a legendary skin). Thresh as one of the most popular supports is more likely to gain a following than any other supports champion with a game mode based on them. If more people feel comfortable playing Thresh, more people are likely to play Thresh support in regular games.
The game more is like Pudge Wars, the custom map made for Warcraft 3 that was based on a hero of DOTA (Pudge)... Hero who, as Thresh, has grab skills... i guess that other champs that could work of the map are Alistar, Blitzcrank and Nautilus.

So, as Sharjo said... the game mode only works for the skills of Thresh and champions like Varus or Kha would be unable to do anything... Look at the whole Dark Star theme just as a decoration.
