Why People Generally Dislike Lore Changes

Old Trundle: Troll that was cursed and sacrificed to bare the entire weight of his troll clan's rotting curse, causing him to set out to find a way to get rid of his misery forever. New Trundle: Cunning and brutal troll king who decided he wanted to prove himself to his tribe, screwed up big time, and got lucky since it turns out Lissandra wanted an army of giant troll beasts. (making Trundle feel a bit like a sidekick to Lissandra)

Old Varus: Man who had lost everything and embraced the darkness in order to take vengeance upon those who had been slaughtered by Noxus. New Varus: Old demon-like figure trapped in a weapon that was accidentally released by two gay lovers and became one with them literally. Now is going around killing people and uniting the Darkin while the two gay lovers tell him he is a bad person in his head.

Old Nautilus: Common joe sailor sent out to sea but was attacked by a mysterious power in the ocean before being betrayed by his crew. This causes him to vow revenge on them, all while seemingly cursed by the entity that dragged him under. New Nautilus: Mythical sea giant that drags sailors under in order to feed an angry god.

Old Fizz: Survivor of a now seemingly extinct fish race that literally disappeared over night. Now lives within Bilgewater and has to carve his own life out of the world. New Fizz: Coral reef yordle that trolls sailors by messing with them, but isn't to be messed with because he can control many of the monsters of the depths.

See my point? There are some great new stories that Riot has set up, but look at the differences here. The characters became so much more bland and seemingly without any clear baseline goals set in their lore. Even if they do have a goal, it's usually not something someone can relate to or, to be brutally honest, original. Plus, due to how often Riot develops lore, people know that this is how these characters are going to be for a long time. In fact, sometimes even when Riot develops lore for a character, it sometimes doesn't even develop them as a character. It just shows them in action, doing flashy stuff. The Darius comic? That's development. That's more of what we need. Unfortunately, that stuff happens uncommonly and infrequently. Riot has already stated they are done doing events like Bilgewater, which was an absolutely amazing event. So, for a lot of these champions, this is what they will be for a pretty long time and it's unfortunate.

This is a problem of Riot shifting from personal stories to "legendary" or "mythic" story telling. Sometimes this is done well, like with Ornn, where we're told a bunch of creation myths about him. Other times, like with Zoe, we're kind of... like what? She's a kid, so she's relatable, but she has sociopathic/really funked up emotional and personality.

Personal stories are easier to relate to, but when every champion is slowly becoming pretty hard to relate/like on an emotional/story/personal level (Kalista, Bard, Kindred, Aurelion Sol, Tahm Kench, Evenlyn) because they're literal one-note godlike beings then the story loses a lot of impact.

The Darius comic? That's development. That's more of what we need.

I thought the Darius comic was bland, but I liked the expansion of Darius' background. I personally wouldn't have killed off Q- whatever her name is.

I feel we need more side characters, with distinct designs and personalities, that stand out besides champions. I think the only one that's still canon is Tamara (?) from Darius' comic but even her design is pretty meh. All of the rival gang leaders in MF's comic are dead... Nami's mom is pretty hot but she's pretty much Nami so meh.

Fuck, even the two gay lovers, Kai and Valmar, were bland as hell and they're 2/3rds of Varus. Honestly, tell me what Kai and Valmar were like pre-merge without rereading the comic for specific talking head dialogue. They weren't very strong or memorable.
