The Black Border Around Champ Icons

I wanna replicate the Champ Icons in a picture editor, but they have that black border I can't quite identify. Does anyone know what that effect is called?

I'm not sure if this will give you the exact effect, but here's my suggestion... Make a square and put it one layer above the icon. Give it a short gradient, going only a small distance to the center of the icon. If it goes a bit farther in or is darker than you want, turn you eraser tool's transparency down and erase from the middle of the image.

Or another solution that might be even simpler... Make a black border that slightly overlaps the edges of the icon. Use the eraser tool to make the border lighter in the center, but still dark around the edges by making shifts in the tool's transparency.

I don't know if there's an easier way to do this, as I'm on my phone and can't get to my computer to check, but these are pretty simple ways of replicating the effect. Also, I'm not sure which picture editor you're using, but these methods are possible in both PhotoShop and GIMP.
