Can we get a VO Remake roadmap? / What champions need a VO update?

ADC Yuumi··19 votes·16,163 views

Hey.

Riot said Lux would be one of the only ones to get a VO update but no rework. ...then Lee Sin popped up.

Will we be getting a VO update roadmap soon enough?

That said, with current lore alterations.

Here's a few champions who need a VO, stat. Ahri Annie Nidalee Vladimir Graves TwistedFate

Varus and MissFortune are pretty high due to lore changes. MissFortune actually had one but due to mixed internal feedback they canned it.

LeeSin is having his done for a completely different reason then any other champion.

Me, you and other few people keep mentioning these two Varus MissFortune but we still can't get Riot to address where they are with these two VO Updates. I would like to think that they wouldn't just give up after not working out the first time (like in MF's case).

Sukishoo1 votes

Well in most cases they cannot really address much of anything. All of their work is under NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreements), so if anything they are doing is in production they cannot say. All we have gathered was MF was being worked on back when Gun Goddess was developed but got canned due to mixed internal feedback. So they planned to look at it again in the future, but who knows "when" that future is.

For some reason Riot doesn't like doing these. Its kind of frustrating that they are so unwilling to ever call a Voice Actor back for anything. They basically only do it for Legendary/Ultimate skins, which is why Lux got her VO; just a good opportunity since she was already there for Elementalist. (I've heard that they did the same for MF, but didn't go through due to poor reception). They randomly had Jinx and Ziggs' VAs back for Odyssey which was a nice surprise (Kayn's VA was already back for the Legendary skin, but that was nice, too).

I'm just thinking about things like the way Blizzard will quite frequently add lines to Overwatch Heroes whenever a new event rolls around or they get new skins. I don't expect Riot to do things with THAT high of a frequency, but SOMETHING more would be nice.

It has nothing to do with "not liking" this idea. We LOVE the idea of updating old champs. Usually, we book talent for 4 hour chunks of studio time (guild minimums). While this sounds like a lot of time with an actor in the booth, it actually goes by suuuper fast, with the first hour or so being time for the director (we have a rotating roster of wonderful VO directors), actor, and writer to hone in on the character and find the voice. Then it's three hours (with breaks) to get the right takes on lines. We end with efforts (non verbals) which typically blow out the actor's voice.

WE can usually record a full 150 line script in 4 hours. So to bring an actor back for a skin, doesn't really afford us much time with said actor to record an additional set of lines for base champ VO. We're looking into ways to make this happen, but then we typically run into bandwidth issues internally for folks to select, process, edit, hook up, and test the new lines IN ADDITION to the skin VO. It's one of my personal passions to redo as many old champ VOs as possible, and we're making some head way. But I would hate to promise you fine folks something that may take a long time to deliver bc we're all stretched very thin. Writers have to write a lot of new content for league. VO designers have to iterate and implement new content. Anything old we're updating is additional work we're doing on top of our normal workload.

Again, it's one of my personal missions to bring as many old champs up to modern quality bar as possible. It's also super hard to do when some of our talent no longer works in the industry meaning we have to recast. Recasting tends to upset mains and we wind up seeing diminishing returns on the effort.

TLDR: It's complicated, but it's a dream we do share with you :)

I wonder if you could answer this, wouldn't it have made sense to update champions like Caitlyn, and Vayne's VO's when they got their legendary skins and killed two birds with one stone?

Sukishoo5 votes

They literally said there's not enough time to do both the skin AND base VO most of the time. They probably only got it done with a few of them like Lux cause hers was just a few additional lines, or Lee Sin cause they probably scheduled some extra time to work on both (since his was the Base and God Fist (again).

Someone like Vayne would need a complete redo as her Project VO was done by Sivir's Actress, thus the Base VO would need a completely new sound. Sometimes when they plot out a Legendary / Ultimate skin I don't think they really look into the past of their champions much, so the base goes unthought of until later on. As they are trying to put the skin out and make sure it's up to quality standards afterall, so they need to focus on it more than anything when putting that together.

When you ultimately come around to Rammus, what are your plans for him? I can imagine 6 voice lines is quite a bit below today's standards, but I feel it is an important part of his identity. Are you going to look into keeping any additional lines as simple as his current ones, or do something entirely different?

Hi, since you're here talking (or should I say writing) about champions VO rework, can we talk a second about the Lee Sin one that was launched on the PBE almost a week and a half ago?

Many in the League of Legends community disapprove the voice rework Riot Games has done for Lee Sin and it's necessity compared to other champions who needs a voice update as well (and the circumstance for which the VO rework was pushed in the PBE servers quietly without noticing the players that there would be a new voice for both the basic VO and the God Fist Legendary Skin and making it like nothing ever happened when questionned about it doesn't help either), We get that you wanted to update his voice lines to reflect upon the current lore, the problem doesn't lie there. We have gone to a character who's voice is calm of mind, yet determined and who would not back down when he has to fight type to a generic asian-type warrior, a samurai of some sort (for a lack of better words to describe it). Even with the new lore, Feodor Chin's performance doesn't do justice to the character.

You've also stated that :

It's also super hard to do when some of our talent no longer works in the industry meaning we have to recast.

While that statement is true in the case a talent no longer works in the industry, allow me to remind you that Vic Mignogna, the voice actor who provided the voice work for Lee Sin (and his God Fist Legendary Skin in 2017) & Malzahar still works in this industry. Plus, Riot Games has commited themselves throught their Legendary & Ultimate Skins to call back the original voice actor whenever possible (If provided they still works in the industry).

While I do not trash Feodor Chin's performance itself, I believe (along many other players in the League of Legends community) that Vic Mignogna's performance is iconic and is a part as to why Lee Sin is popular as a champion today and I believe that the VO should be updated by Vic Mignogna. Just push back Lee Sin VO update for now, and get Vic in the booth to record the new lines (maybe add even new ones :p) and properly update Lee Sin's voice without throwing off the players who likes Lee Sin as a character (And notice the players that there will be a new voice rework).

In the meantime, you can update some VO's who DO need the rework, I think of the following champion :

Orianna - Orianna Blitzcrank - Blitzcrank (just keep Duncan Watt pretty please, he's great as Blitzcrank) Tryndamere - Tryndamere Kassadin - Kassadin Annie - Annie

Notice that I took those who has very low numbers of voice lines compared to new (and reworked) champions and had their lore completely changed (or partially changed) and who's voice actor might no longer work in the industry (I'm talking about Heather Pennington, the voice actor of Orianna, there is no record of her doing a voice work after 2012) or who might have already been remplaced by Riot Games (Notably Cristina Milizia, the voice actor of Annie who was replaced by Emma Shannon in the 2018 short "Annie: Origins" for Annie's new lore)

I hope you'll see my comment and take my criticism into account for current and future voice production

This is really nice to hear! Though, I still wonder...

1- Does this mean "money" is not the problem? I for one always thought that was the reason the "Riot Company" didn't give it effort. Also:

2- Without promising anything of course, is 2-3 voice over updates yearly too much of a dream? 4-5 if I push my chance?

Larriet3 votes

Not speaking as a Rioter of course, but for 1, the problem they brought up was that it adds onto the workload they already have set. From the outside, it can seem like this is strictly a money thing ("Hire more guys, you have billions of dollars" and all that), but you have to remember that, as a company, having a strong direction that everyone follows becomes harder and harder the more people you add in. Hiring someone specifically to do a one-time job--for example, editing a new VO for a champ who just got a Legendary skin--means that they won't go about things the same way as someone who is a full-time employee, which can have surprisingly large effects on the final product.

Like I said, not a Rioter, but that has been my experience as a freelance musician.

I was asking more of on the behalf of voice actors' costs but thanks for giving insight to it! Always a pleasure to hear people's experiences inside the sector

I don't believe it for a second. Unless it's a popular champion, you Developers don't care. It's nothing more than a bunch of different egos at Riot deciding the same champions get everything.

The VO actress for Karma, Danielle, said multiple times she would come back in a heartbeat to do VO work for Karma or come back period. Karma's VGU on the art and VO update side was rushed and never completed. Riot is aware of all of this but somehow the same champions just keep getting the work while others are ignored.

There is no excuse for why MF and Varrus still doesn't have VO work when you guys know how many of us want a model update and VO update. Maybe it's time to stop doing VGU and adding new champions and throw in two or three mini VGU like you prioritized on Rye, Ezreal and Morgana. You all know that what actually needs to get done. Where is this work ethic all of you keep saying is passionate and caring? I dont see it.

Leetri7 votes

These are the type of comments that makes Rioters not want to talk with you guys on the boards, just saying. Could've framed that much better without being accusative and condescending. Why should Karma be prioritized over everyone else? There's champions who are way worse off than her who deserve to be worked on first.

If they didn't care, they wouldn't bother to come here and talk to us.

They did a VO update for MF, but I believe it was scrapped due to them not being able to please everyone. Some people see MF as a sexy pirate, some see her as a badass pirate. They did VOs for both, and even combined them, but the feedback was overall negative, so it was scrapped.

Varus I don't know about.

It was more that the feedback was too split between the types of champion people heard from it. So they chose not to release it and try again in the future.

Why can't she be a badass sexy pirate?

I'm sure theres characters who could or prob should get totally new actors anyway... varus comes to mind, and he'd be cool if you used sound mixing to make it sound like sometimes there's 3 different people saying the same lines etc.

I guess that was poor wording on my part. I meant more that you don't typically do VO updates for whatever reason. Thank you for your insight into the process; 4 hours isn't a lot for a VO recording session, that's for sure. It makes me wonder how Overwatch devs do their recording, as they bring back their VAs fairly frequently. And yeah, recasting sucks, but it happens. I can remember how painful it was for Nasus to get his voice changed, but as I recall, the actor had passed away. Sometimes there's just nothing you can do. I'm glad to hear that you are as passionate about VOs as we are!

Lots of that sounds good. I'd look to bringing back VO that isn't just older champions, but those who interact with a lot of others. Like Tahm Kench used to have a taunt for almost every character because he is a demon trying to get under people's skin. Things like that would be neat with more interactions.

There's two things I want to ask.

  1. What is the possibility in seeing both Miss Fortune and Varus having their Voice Lines Updated (as they were said to be originally the highest priority in that category)?

  2. Since you say "It's also super hard to do when some of our talent no longer works in the industry meaning we have to recast. Recasting tends to upset mains and we wind up seeing diminishing returns on the effort.".. Have you ever thought about doing a few Voice Over samples with different Voice Actors and have people vote for which one they prefer (like on League of Legends Nexus Page)?

4 hours is a surprisingly short amount of time imo. I sort of expected something like that to take longer. At the effective 3 hours to do all the lines the voice actor has 1 minute and 12 seconds per line of dialogue.

I have to wonder how often voice lines get cut because it takes too many takes to get it right.

Next will probably be Malzahar, and then no one for a while.

'Cause Lee Sin isn't getting one for story reasons. He's getting one because Vic Mignogna did the voice and Riot execs think that cutting a guy who's innocent out of their game over his controversy will give them moral brownie points in light of their own controversy.

The reason I say Malz is, of course, because Mignogna did his voice too.

If they aren't going to give some champ updated visual, least they could do is expand on Voice Overs.

MF, Nocturne, Cho, Sona, Nidalee, plus others I'm missing, still refer to 'summoners'.

Recently they got the voice actor for Nami in to do Yuumi's voice. Nami's dialogue is all fish/water puns. Couldn't pay her an extra $100 and redo Nami's voice over?

If they aren't going to give some champ updated visual, least they could do is expand on Voice Overs.

MF, Nocturne, Cho, Sona, Nidalee, plus others I'm missing, still refer to 'summoners'.

Recently they got the voice actor for Nami in to do Yuumi's voice. Nami's dialogue is all fish/water puns. Couldn't pay her an extra $100 and redo Nami's voice over?

This is not how contracts work.

Then, you do another contract? Then it's up to the Va to accept it or not.

Yes it is.

In the Anglo-American common law, formation of a contract generally requires an offer, acceptance, consideration, and a mutual intent to be bound. Each party must have capacity to enter the contract. Although most oral contracts are binding, some types of contracts may require formalities such as being in writing or by deed.

Well would there be any hope for some of the older champions to get more voice lines?

Today's champions are EXTREMELY talkative with all sorts of personality and flavor, but some of the older champions have like a handful of voice lines

I'm just asking if it's possible for old champions to get some fresh voice lines even if it's just a few extra lines thrown in with the current ones.

They would have needed to put in extra studio time, which would mean they'd have had to book it which might not have been possible as other people might be using said Studio. Plus it costs a lot more than $100 for VO on lines / redoing a full champion; lol.

Plus the contract for Yuumi isn't the same contract as the one for Nami. So they would have had to get another one and have her go over and sign that too.

The $100 is just a throw away/sarcastic amount, obviously costs more than than. Just a shame they couldn't use the talent if they were getting them in to do more, even if that meant a bit more time, money and new contract to do some more voice lines for a character they'd already voiced before. If I was the talent, I'd welcome the work.

But I guess "Eww, whale breath." is good enough.

Anyone with a VO shorter than 5, even 10 minutes really. VOs are a great way to show a champion's personality and many champions could use one given how old their VOs are. Some more than others. I'd personally love to see Syndra but hum... Well, not happening. :')

Katarina needs a VO update desperately! She has so few lines and literally no interactions.

I think NNocturne should be a priority champion to VO.

His ability to enter dreams and the subconsciousness make him a gold mine for Lore quotes and revelations in a similar manner to Swain. I think they should give him priority above everyone else.
