Sir Oswald- The Humble Knight
CCOS Entry April 2018 Review CCOS Role: Tank/Bruiser Suggested Lane: Top lane/ Jungle
> LORE
In a world where men, monsters, gods, and creatures of an unknown realm fight against each other, a hero is needed to end this eternal conflict. Sir Oswald is not that hero. Sir Oswald is but a humble knight of Demacia willing to follow his commanders into the rift and fight for what he believes in, the protection of his homeland, but most importantly, the protection of his family.
Sir Oswald has always seen his glorious commander Garen and his loving prince Jarvan IV as hero's of Demacia, so when the day came that his commanders were called upon to join the Rift, he decided then and there that he would follow them to this battle.
Several of the common folk and other knights made fun of Sir Oswald. He was not the strongest nor the smartest, in fact, most people described him as, "average." Sir Oswald knew this fact well, he knew that he could never learn any sort of ability like his respected commanders, so he turned to what he knew best, martial combat.
He trained himself hard in his select weaponry, honing in the skills of his combat. When the day came for his commanders to leave their home and march into battle he ran to the armory, picked up his weapons and armor, kissed his wife and children goodbye, and followed in the footsteps of his glorious leaders.
(Short story and extra near the end of the post)
> CONCEPT
Sir Oswald is my take on a quirky, stance based champion who's skills all focus around dealing CC and resetting autoattacks. He would primarily be played in the top lane but I could also see him being a formidable jungler.
> APPEARANCE
Sir Oswald is wearing an iron breastplate with chainmail underneath. His left arm is fully plated iron plates and is wearing an iron gauntlet. His right arm is a mixture of Iron and hard leather. (Based loosely on the Elite Knight Armor Set from the Dark Souls franchise.) he is always wearing a closed helmet with the visor down to ensure protection of his face. The front of his breastplate is covered with a blue cloth that has the Demacian standard sewn on.
> KIT
Passive: Fatigue- Sir Oswald has a hard time keeping up with these strong heroes, as Sir Oswald auto attacks his Fatigue meter begins to fill up, his damage slowly decreases per swing, but he also begins to sweat.
Fatigue bar from 0-200
Sweat- Sir Oswald becomes SLIPPERY (are you proud Phreak) making him hard to grab thus increasing his tenacity, the higher the meter of Fatigue the larger the tenacity bonus.
Tenacity: 0-60% according to Fatigue bar
Once Fatigues meter fills up completely Sir Oswald pulls out a Demacian Made Ration and consumes it, he feels rejuvenated and has a short burst of movement speed and he gains Adrenaline.
Movement Speed: 15-60 bonus movement speed, scales per level
Adrenaline- Sir Oswald's next auto attack is empowered and deals % health damage.
Damage: 3%-12% of enemies missing health, scales as he levels up
Minor Passive: Whenever Sir Oswald switches weapons it costs Fatigue, Fatigue bar will drop slowly if Sir Oswald does not switch weapons or autoattack. Autoattacks cost 5 fatigue. Filling the Fatigue bar past 200 with a weapon swap will set it to 0 even if it goes over. Ex: Fatigue at 190, you switch stance, would add to 210 but instead goes to 0.
Q: Mace and Shield- Sir Oswald pulls out his a small shield and mace
Fatigue Cost: (15, 20, 25, 30, 30)
Q passive: Mace and Shield gives Sir Oswald flat armor and a bonus % of armor, the armor is based upon Sir Oswalds Fatigue meter, The more fatigue Sir Oswald has, the less bonus armor Mace and Shield gives him.
Armor by rank: (5,10,15,20,25) + 20, 25, 30, 35, 40% bonus to total armor
Q active: Shield Bash- Recasting Mace and Shield makes Sir Oswald preform a Shield bash, knocking away enemies in a small cone in front of him, if the target is directly in front of Shield bash they receive a small stun. (Think of a very small Camille W where the inner part is stun range and the outer part only knocks people away). If Sir Oswald successfully stuns a target with Shield Bash he can recast Mace and Shield again to preform Hard Swing
Damage: (25, 50, 75, 100, 125 Magic damage) + 0.4 AP Scaling
Fatigue Cost: (10, 15, 20, 25, 25)
Q active 2: Hard Swing- If the target was successfully stunned by Shield bash the target leaves an opening, Sir Oswald swings his mace down hard upon the target dealing extra damage. NOTE: Hard Swing can proc Adrenaline
Damage: (45, 65, 85, 95, 115 Physical damage) + 0.6 AD Scaling
Fatigue Cost: (5, 10, 15, 20, 20)
W: Pike- Sir Oswald pulls out his Pike
Fatigue Cost: (15, 20, 25, 30, 30)
W passive: Pike gives Sir Oswald farther range and damage but lessens his attack speed. As the Fatigue meter increases Sir Oswald gains more damage but less range on his autos.
Bonus Damage: 15-40, 25-50, 35-60, 45-70, 55-80 based upon Fatigue bar, (Keep in mind, Fatigue will counter alot of the AD given, after all fatigue lowers the damage of auto attacks done by Sir Oswald.)
Range: 175-125 based upon Fatigue bar
W active: Pikeman's Advance - Recasting Pike will cast Pikeman's Advance, Sir Oswald charges at a target slowly (for he is not as fast or agile as a hero), When Sir Oswald hits an enemy champion he will keep charging for the rest of the range of Pikeman's Advance If the target rams into a wall they are stunned. If Sir Oswald successfully stuns a target with Pikeman's Advance he gains an Adrenaline proc Recasting Pike again if the enemy hits the wall after Pikeman's Advance Sir Oswald will preform Skilled Pikeman.
Damage: (60, 75, 90, 105, 120 Physical Damage) + 0.6 AD scaling
Fatigue cost: (10, 15, 20, 25, 25)
active 2: Skilled Pikeman- If Sir Oswald successfully stunned a target with Pikeman's Advance he can recast Pike to nimbly swing his target in a 180 degree circle behind him.
Fatigue cost: (5, 10, 15, 20, 20)
E: Crossbow- Sir Oswald pulls out his Crossbow to deal damage from afar, unfortunately Sir Oswald can only carry a limited amount of bolts (the amount of bolts increase per point put into Crossbow) Sir Oswald replenishes bolts if he returns to the fountain, enemies killed by bolts will drop onto the ground, Sir Oswald can pick up these bolts, they disappear after a short period of time or if an enemy champion steps upon them.
Bolts: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
Fatigue Cost: (15, 20, 25, 30, 30)
E passive: Crossbow gives Sir Oswald bonus AD, Crossbow also has a set drawback time to fire bolts (he needs time to cock the string and load the bolt). The time it takes to load the crossbow is based upon Sir Oswalds fatigue meter, the higher the fatigue meter the longer it takes to load a bolt.
Bonus AD: (15, 25, 35, 45, 55)
E active: Flaming bolt- Recasting Crossbow will cast Flaming bolt, Sir Oswald ignites one of his bolts dealing damage overtime.
Fatigue Cost: (10, 15, 20, 25, 25)
Damage: (55, 75, 95, 115, 135 Magic Damage over time) + 0.6 AP Scaling
E Flaming bolt passive: If the target is below 50% health Flaming bolt will break a small portion of armor. If an enemy champion is killed with Crossbow or Flaming bolt Sir Oswald gains an adrenaline proc.
R: Foot Soldiers Rage- Sir Oswald thinks about his family and the emotions of protecting them floods into his mind, he sees the enemy and gains a rage so large he lets out a scream (Please make it audible across the map similar to Sion's ult :) it would be really cool and funny).
Foot Soldiers Rage- Freezes Sir Oswald's Sweat meter (meaning that the bonus tenacity will stay active with Foot Soldiers Rage's duration but the Fatigue meter will change). Sir Oswald's Fatigue meter resets to 0 and will not increase during Foot Soldiers Rage, While Fatigue builds up it does not effect his abilities and becomes blind to the summoner. Every 4th auto-attack while Foot Soldiers Rage is active will deal an Adrenaline proc on the enemy, Sir Oswald also gains increased attack speed.
Bonus of Foot Soldiers Rage: Shield Bash, Pikemans Charge, and Flaming Bolt become stronger
Shield Bash: Range of cone becomes larger and the entire cone stuns enemies
Pike: will also deal max bonus damage
Pikemans Advance: Speed and damage of Pikemans Charge increases to match that of a hero, simply hitting a hero with Pikemans Charge will stun them.
Flaming bolt: Sir Oswald shoots 3 flaming bolts with no reload time meaning they fire all at once.
Foot soldiers Rage End: After Foot Soldiers Rage ends all the fatigue used during the duration of Foot Soldiers Rage will rush back into Sir Oswald, if the Fatigue surpassed 100% of the Fatigue meter then Sir Oswald Passes out from exhaustion and Power Nap is initiated.
Power Nap: Regardless of Tenacity Sir Oswald will lie on the ground until his Fatigue meter reaches 0 once again (even if the meter was at 1000%) As the Fatigue meter is going down during, Power Nap increases Sir Oswald's health regen substantially. Damage afflicted by enemies will quicken the speed at which the Fatigue meter drops during Power Nap
> COMBO
Sir Oswald's best combo will be AA<Q<AA<Q2 and some sort of hydra reset. The idea of his abilities is to have lots of ways to reset his autoattacks.
> GAMEPLAY
The key difference between a good Sir Oswald player and a bad one will definitely come down to Fatigue control. Making sure you switch weapons appropriately so you can proc Adrenaline will be crucial. If you change too early you may suffer with a high fatigue bar which means less damage and range.
Mace and Shield will be your main source of defense and CC, making sure you start trades with a low Fatigue bar will be vital to mitigate the most amount of damage.
Pike will be your most consistent source of damage, the bonus AD will counter your Fatigue bar making CS'ing a little easier, the decrease in range however will make you much more easy to kite. This will be your primary source to set up ganks with Skilled Pikeman.
Crossbow will be your safest option, you have a ranged tool but it is very limited, especially at lower levels. Making sure you use crossbow while your fatigue is low will be vital, if you switch while your fatigue is almost maxed the chance of you loading and taking a shot will be very low, your reload speed would just be too long, you need to either start a trade with crossbow or finish one after your engage with Pikemans Advance and CC with Shield Bash. Laning Phase: Sir Oswald's laning phase would be very hard compared to other champs, his Fatigue passive decreases the amount of damage he does making CSing harder to do and trading would be a pain. As he begins to level though he can effectively make use of his recast stances to either engage or kite an enemy champion. His Pikemans Advance, if landed, will be his main source of trading as it gives him an Adrenaline proc and a way to set up the enemy to be ganked by your jungler. As you play Sir Oswald you would want to utilizes the recast abilities to finish your Fatigue meter to give you Adrenaline procs making full use of his auto attack damage.
Team Fights: The combo that I see Sir Oswald pulling off would be really fun in my opinion. The perfect way to set up your combo would be to fill your Fatigue meter up to almost full in order to get the most out of your Sweat buff, you would then use Foot Soldiers Rage to freeze your Sweat buff (Which gives you tenacity) and begin your carnage. You would be a fighter with high tenacity and your auto attacks will be doing much more damage because your fatigue bar will stay at 0, you would probably engage with Pikemans Advance, then follow up with an Adrenaline Proc then recast to preform Skilled Pikeman, then switch to Mace and Shield (by now the enemy team will be focusing you, Mace and Shield will mitigate some damage dealt to you because of its passive) Then you would proceed to Shield Bash them and hope to stun as many as you can. As your team follows your sweet engage you could use any weapon you like, as the fight would be nearing it's end you would switch to Crossbow and fire Flaming Bolts at targets running away. Just remember, after you finish the teamfight most likely, if you used everything, you will enter Power Nap, making you immobile but regenerating your health. If the teamfight was still going on while you entered Power Nap hopefully your team will protect you and your regen will save you from dying, and if the enemy does begin to focus you remember that Power Naps Fatigue meter goes down much faster if damage is being dealt to you.
Counter-play: Engaging on Sir Oswald while his Fatigue is high will be the best way to kill him, right when he's around 130 would be perfect, he doesn't have enough to get to his adrenaline proc, his reload speed with crossbow will be a lot slower, his range will be lower with pike, his armor will be less with Mace and Shield. Just make sure that his ult is down when you do engage on him. Items will also help, he is a primarily auto attacking champion, building a thornmail or Frozen Heart will be very effective against Sir Oswald.
> NOTE: THE REST OF THIS POST IS BONUS IDEAS THAT I BELIEVE ADD EXTRA DEPTH TO SIR OSWALD > SHORT STORY
Sir Oswald was not always a humble knight of Demacia. His story begins in a small country village on the outskirts of Demacian borders.
Oswald lived a simple life, born into a family of farmers, he was never rich but his family was never poor either. He lived in a small village community in the country. Some would say this lifestyle was boring, but Oswald always enjoyed his life. He was able to enjoy a meal with his family, he had daily duties that kept him busy, and every now and then he could enjoy time with friends from the village, Oswald was content with his life.
One brisk morning, Oswald stepped out of his small but comfy house and headed towards the field. He had noticed that his work lately was much harder than before, perhaps his father was entrusting him with more responsibilities. Oswald saw a man standing in the field, a large ox was attached to a plow.
"Morning son," the voice sounded calm and happy.
"Morning dad," while he was still tired from yesterdays work he was always happy to be with his father on these early mornings.
"Son, I think its time. You're twelve years old now, almost a man." Oswald's father stared into the distant, the sunrise looming in the horizon, "Gods, it feels just like yesterday when I taught you're two brothers how to plow." the mans attention turned back to his son. He leaned forward and placed his hand on his son's shoulder.
"I wont be around forever son. I'm getting older everyday." He handed the child the reigns to the plow, "ready to plow son?"
The boy was excited, "Yes father, I wont let you down."
"That's my boy, I know you won't."
And so the two began to plow the empty field, they talked as the boy practiced, it was the perfect image of father son bonding.
"So, I've heard you're talking to Nestor's daughter." A sly smile appeared on the mans lips.
The boy blushed and after a few moments he responded with, "Yeah, she's nice."
"Just nice?" the man now had a playful eyebrow raised. The boy's face turned red.
"Well, me and Nestor go way back. Have I ever told you of our stories together?"
Normally, the boy would have listened intently to these stories but, only one image flooded his mind. This image blocked out all of the sound of the outside world. The face of a young girl with fair, hazelnut hair and deep brown eyes. While these two have always known each other, something recently has made the boy want to spend more time with her.
A faint noise entered the boys mind, "Son, son can you hear me?"
The boy stammered, "Y...yes father."
The man smiled, "Why dont we call it good for today, it's almost noon and I'm sure that you want to go meet with your friends."
"Are you sure father?"
"Go, son. I've got it from here." the man smiled, "go grab something to eat from mom and go meet with your friends."
"Thanks dad," the boy began to run off towards the house.
After a quick bite to eat and a wash in the bath, Oswald began his walk towards the village. Soon the boy was in the village looking for the girl. His search continued, he had almost given up on finding her until he felt a small poke on his back. He turned around and saw the fair haired girl.
"Hey Oz-Oz!" She gave the boy a smile as she said these words happily.
"I told you not to call me that Liliana." The boy said in protest, but deep down, he knew he enjoyed the teasing of the girl.
"Alright, Alright."
"So what do you want to do today?"
The girl thought about the question for a moment, "Want to go to the lake?"
The idea resonated well in the boys mind, the brisk morning had transformed into a rather hot afternoon, the lake sounded like a great idea.
"Sure! Lets go!"
And so the duo walked out of the village towards the forest. After a only passing a couple trees the two found the river, the water was shallow and not too fast, perfect to play in. They played with each other for what felt like hours, splashing water and enjoying their youth. Before they knew it the sun had already fallen considerably, within a few hours night would descend upon the small village.
As the two's play date was coming to an end they were abruptly stopped by a sound in the distance.
"Do you hear that?" Liliana asked.
"Yeah. Is that the village bell?" A tinge of fear was in Oswald's voice.
"Yeah... I think we should go back now." The same fear had taken her voice as well.
The pair began to walk back towards the village, the walk soon turned into a run, as the bell was beginning to get louder the run became a sprint. Before the two entered the city Oswald stopped Lily.
"Let's both go home right now, I'll find you later ok?" The girl nodded in confirmation.
The two began to head in opposite directions. In the direction of Oswald's home he could see a red hew fill the sky, he knew something was wrong, the very air around him felt heavy with dread.
He reached his house and saw a horror that still haunts him today. His house was being burned down. On the front steps laid a young man. His body was lifeless, several shafts of arrows were logged into his chest. The fear had overtaken Oswald, he began to search frantically, hoping to find his parents. In the field, Oswald saw several figures holding axes and bloodied swords except for the two in the center, an older looking man was holding a pitchfork, the other man had a scythe. The other man began to yell,
"YOU NOXIAN BASTARDS! YOU KILLED MY BROTHER!" The words he said must've been cursed, almost instantly, an ax was flying through the air and landed perfectly into the man's chest. A cry of rage so loud emitted from the other man, the very thought of it still gives Oswald shivers. The man lunged his pitchfork and stabbed one of the soldiers in the chest, he had tried to release it and strike again but it was too late, several axes and swords had pierced the mans sides, he fell limp to the ground.
Oswald stared at his family, there they lie, lifeless. The boy stared for an eternity in his mind until he felt a hand clasp his shoulder, he jerked quickly to see his attacker.
"Son," the familiar voice of a woman spoke to him, "Run!" She shouted.
Oswald knew this woman as his mother, he examined her, an arrow protruded out of her left calf.
The woman gave her son a final hug, tears flowing down her face. The voices of the soldiers could be heard coming in the direction of the two. The woman left the embrace and picked up her weapon once again, a crossbow, bully cocked and ready to fire. She aimed it at the approaching soldiers.
"RUN OSWALD!"
This time the command resonated with him, he ran, he ran as fast as he could towards the village. To his surprise, the village itself had changed. What was once a peaceful, small community was now a living embodiment of Hell. Several houses were on fire, men cloaked in black and red were slaughtering the villagers. Oswald ran through the streets of Hell hoping he could make it out, blocking out all the sounds of pain and agony. But even through all the horrible screams one yell had made it into his mind. He opened his eyes and saw her, Lily. The screaming was coming from her house, through the window Oswald saw Lily in the corner of her house surrounded by fire. He rushed towards the door and attempted to open it. The metal door handle was burning, a cry of pain emitted from his mouth. This did not stop Oswald though, soon his cry of pain became a cry of rage. He was never going to stand by and watch his friends and family die like that again. He forced the door open, pushing fallen debris out of the way, a gust of hot air and smoke passing his face.
He rushed into the house and grabbed Lily's hand and ran out of the house. The two ran through the streets, the carnage still going on. Soon the duo left the village and ended up back at the river, they fell to their knees from exhaustion. After several deep breaths Oswald looked back at Lily, she was covered in blood and passed out from exhaustion but she looked safe, He was about to pass out as well but a voice interrupted this process.
This voice was different, however, this voice filled Oswald with a strange sense of hope.
"Brothers and Sisters of Demacia!" The voice boomed from the forest, "Today we fight these Noxian invaders to protect our homeland! Show them the might of Demacia!" A roar of cheers and applause came from the forest, and soon after an army of footsteps was heading in their direction. Hundreds of soldiers cladded in blue charged out of the forest, all running around the two heading in the direction of the village. After all the soldiers had cleared a noble figure approached the boy. Without saying a word he scoped the two children into his arms.
"Who are you?" Oswald asked weakly.
"I am Jarvan the III, King of Demacia."
The king approached another noble looking man, this one was much younger, in fact he was only about five years older than Oswald.
"Son, I want you to take these two to the carriage. I am afraid we have arrived too late."
"Yes father." Oswald felt the exchange happen but nothing more, he passed out, exhausted from the previous endeavor.
Oswald awoke in a moving carriage, Liliana's head in his lap, her face had been washed. The boy looked in the carriage and saw two other men siting across from him. The one on the left was the young noble from earlier, the one on the right he did not know. The large man on the right was wiping the blood off of his massive greatsword.
"How do I become a soldier of Demacia?" The question was sudden and hung in the air for about ten seconds until the man on the right gave an answer.
"Do you have something you want to protect?"
Oswald looked down at Liliana, he stroked her hazelnut hair and looked directly back at the large man.
"Yes."
"Then I, Garen of Demacia, am your commander now."
And so the pair went to live in the capital of Demacia, life was hard, they constantly had to work in order to have a living but at least they had each other. Soon, Oswald joined a garrison and began his training as a soldier. He devoted his blood, sweat, and tears to the Demacian army and trained hard. Years later when the two had just become adults Sir Oswald was granted his knighthood. On the day of his knighthood Sir Oswald proposed to his beloved Liliana and together they bought a house. In this house Sir Oswald became a proud father, strengthening his resolve to protect his family.
