[Champion Concept] Kalalipan, Kumungu's Plague

BowieTheNifty·1/26/2016, 7:16:26 AM·12 votes·3,109 views

Wow it has been awhile sense I have put up a champion concept. Folks BowietheNifty back again to post another one of these to make the league a more diverse place. So for those who know I am currently working on a set of champions that are well tanks. Tank like champions are something I decided to set my ideas on as there weren't really something I have worked on before. Challenging myself with this Tank Block has really gotten me to get creative. To make those front line champions who can soak up damage like a sponge. This specific concept has been in the works for well over 7 months with on and off work. Feel free to ask questions, give your thoughts, leave feedback on this concept. It would be greatly appreciated.

Now this is a warning to all readers! This champion is mechanically complex just due to it's innate passive alone. To understand the passive I suggest reading the "In-depth" portion of it. For those who simply like to browse there are shortened versions of each ability that just give a general idea of the ability. Anyways onto Kalalipan, Kumungu's Plague!

Kalalipan, Kumungu's Plague

Updates [Lowered base health regen to 5 from 7 - 1/26/2016] [Lowered polymorph resistance and stun resistance to 10% from 25% on passive -1/26/2016] [Lowered current health damage on Venomous to 1/1.5/2/2.5/3% from 1/2/3/4/5% -1/26/2016] [Clarified that poison is applied from Kalalipan's basic attacks and abilities on Q's passive -1/26/2016] [Cooldown changed for W, 18/17/16/15/14 seconds -1/27/2016] [Added Items and Jokes & Taunts sections -1/27/2016] [Added Your Worst Enemies section -1/31/2016]

Appearance (First off I do not take any credit for this art work. It isn't mine by any means. This is simply being used as a reference to give everyone a general idea of what this champion looks like.)

Kalalipan isn't human by any means, it is a giant segmented insect. This monstrosity has a long body with tons of legs that move with a chittering creepy enough to send chill down people's spins. His appearance is based off of segmented creatures mainly the centipede. Though his appearance and even abilities due have some inspiration from a creature known in our world as Velvet Worms. This creature is a predator hunting down its prey with its superior speed and natural weapons. It has large pincers that are retractable meaning it can store them into its body and bring them out to clamp down on its victims. These are mainly used to break through armor, snatch unsuspecting prey, or inject venom into the target. Even when its speed and maneuverability isn't enough to catch its food, then it does have special glands that excrete a web like substance. This webbing is stick and hardens quickly to slow down the poor creatures caught in it. For those who are unfortunately caught by this insect will be constricted by its massive body. Its sharp legs will stab into them and release its venom into the victims before slowly eating every bit of them.

Lore

Journal Entry, Day 1

Today was our first day to start an expedition into the nearly untouched realm of the Kumungu jungle. The goal is to study the wild life of this jungle environment and see what we can discover about them. This journal will be just a personal writing of our adventure through this land. Our group has started to make its head away early this morning and what can I say but that is it an incredible sight to behold. Never in my life have I seen so much wild life before in one place. The insects are what mostly interest me on this trip. Their coloring makes them so beautiful. It is so green and lush with all the plant life, that is feels like this is natures masterpiece. However the travel hasn't been easy by any means. The forest is so dense there is no clear indication of trails. Thankfully the guides we hired to help us along are really good at knowing their way around these parts. The bigger one Cu'chac has been acting as the leader for us. It is hard to understand him when it comes to his accent and his native language. Though he is helpful as he did manage to save Tierel from a dangerous flower. Apparently it releases poison when touched and Tierel is far too curious for his own good. Cu'chac and his two hunters I trust will protect us for the whole week. I am glad to see Hamond on this expedition with us. He is a rather young lad and prefers lab work over field work. The boy has been nervous the whole trip so far, saying that he doesn't feel save even with the hunters. A shy one he is, but I hope this journey will be more then enough to open him up a little bit. For now we have just touched the tip of our expedition deciding to make camp under a large tree. Tomorrow will be a rougher journey tell we reach the river, or at least that is what Cu'chac said. I know I will need all the energy I can must for the upcoming days. - Dr. Jerald Malstro

Journal Entry, Day 2

Our group made it to the river just like it was intended. We had made pit stops on the way to observe some of nature's work. Have you ever seen a cougar hunt before? I can say now that I have. How it stalks its prey and leaps onto them biting the neck of what ever it catches. A rather gruesome sight, but that is how the food chain works. Hamond was repulsed by seeing it. It felt bad for the poor little monkey and wanted to help it. Cu'chac put a stop to that right away though keeping the boy back. The lad has a good heart but he needs to learn that somethings can't be help. I remember when I was like that myself, things change over the years. As well we managed to discover a den of sorts. It was nestled in under a large set of roots and it looked to be just ransacked. There was fresh blood on some creature spread across the ground. Tons of tracks lay every where but it was hard to make out exactly what they were. The possibilities are just boggling in my mind. It is going to be difficult to sleep on this ground again. Tomorrow is another long day of travel. - Dr. Jerald Malstro

Journal Entry, Day 3

Today was much different from the others. One of our group has gone missing during the middle of the night. One of Cu'chac hunters had gone out to investigate something while on night watch apparently. He didn't come back by day break and the other hunter went out to search. It has the big native on edge. He keeps on telling us to keep moving saying that the others would catch up. Tierel was objecting to this however, arguing that they weren't getting any time to settle down for research. I had to agree as he was pushing us more then the other days. The stubborn native didn't listen to us however and we were forced to tag along. We made camp under the over of a small cave this time. The rain was starting and it uncomfortable to be out in the open. Now that I'm sitting by the fire it is nice, but there is something that is eating away at me. Cu'chac's hunters haven't returned yet. I would figure that they would be back by now after all it has been hours sense we made camp. Hopefully they will find us by morning. The native left a trail for them to follow. As well it would put Hamond at ease. The boy was talking earlier about how he felt like we were being followed. Once the hunters return then the lad should see he had nothing to worry about. Now I am going to try to get some sleep. - Dr. Jerald Malstro

Journal Entry, Day 4

There is no saying how big of a disaster this trip has been. Cu'chac's hunters never returned....but that isn't the worse news. We....I lost Teriel...and Hamond today. It is only me and the big guy left. There was this creature that attacked us. Tierel has stopped to try get some samples of this blooming flower. It a flash a set of pincers came out of the brush pulling him in. It was horrifying....the screams...the crunching....the chittering of the creature. The rest of us were shocked...and Cu'chac attempted to rush us out. Hamond didn't move, the boy was paralyzed by fear. I tried to snap him out of it, but nothing was working. The native eventually pulled me off the boy and tossed me aside. The creature came out of the brush rushing at the lad. Before I knew it wrapped itself with its elongated body and hundreds of legs around the him. Cu'chac did what he could by firing arrow after arrow into the giant insect. Eventually though the warrior just simply took out his axe and furiously slashed at the creatures head. After that the insect fell but the native didn't stop swinging. He decapitated the horror and only stopped when he crushed its head beneath his feet. Hamond didn't survive however there was just too many holes in the boy...too much blood loss. After burying the boy...and what was left of Tierel...we ventured along in silence. Cu'chac only said one thing to me that night. "Kalalipan will not rest....Tomorrow we leave." - Dr. Jerald Malstro

Journal Entry

If you are reading this...you need to stay out of this jungle. Cu'chac....my guide is dead...The whole crew is dead! I will be soon without him. That creature....the one he called Kalalipan came back. It wasn't just enough giant centipede, oh no it was the SAME ONE! It had all the arrows from the last encounter still stuck within its body. It's head had grown back simply over night. What ever this thing is...It needs to be killed. I don't care how you do it, burn the whole damned forest down for all I care! This creature is a terror...I can hear is stalking me now. The chittering of its legs....all those legs...the sounds it makes...the way it hunts....I can never get those images and sounds out of my head. I have found the river and I plan on following it out of the jungle. This is my last entry into this journal...Tierel....Hamond....I didn't mean to drag you into this mess. You didn't deserve the end you both got....I *the rest of the page is too damaged to read

Roles Primary: Tank

Stats Hp: 618 (+ 102) Hp regen: 5 (+ 0.9) Mana: 335 (+ 57) Mana regen: 8.5 (+ 0.8) Attack Damage: 58 (+ 4) Attack Speed: 0.601 (+ 2%) Armor: 27 (+ 3.6) Magic Resist: 32.1 (+1.25) Movement Speed: 345 Range: 125

Abilities

Passive - Segmented Kalalipan is made of multiple body parts known as segments with 3 to start. Each segment is a portion of max health, must destroy all segments to be killed, gains additional 50% health regen for every missing segment. Gains additional segment at level 6/11/16 for a max of 6.

> In-Depth Kalalipan is creature made from multiple parts which make up his total health. This is mechanically complicated to fit into one section so I have divided it to several for how it works. Segments There are two types of segments the head and the legs all of which are connected. Each segment is counted as an individual unit, yet all segments are counted as a champion unit. Segments health is equal to a percentage of Kalalipan's max health which changes depending on how many max segments it has currently. Segments have the same armor and magic resist as Kalalipan. Health regen is also shared between each segment. Leg segments can not basic attack and only follow movement of the head.
Movement The legs will follow the heads movements. The head and legs avoid unit collision with one another. Legs follow head similar to Ekko's hologram at a much faster rate. All segments share movement speed, if one gains movement speed or loses movement speed then it applies to all segments. Death and Segment Regen To kill Kalalipan, all segments must be killed. If the head gets destroyed the next segment in line will form into the head after a 0.25 second delay. If a connecting leg segment gets destroyed, the separated segments will reform with the rest after a 0.25 second delay. If a segment is destroyed, Kalalipan's hp regen will increase for all other segments which can go up to 250% once he losses 5 segments. Once a segment is lost he can regain the lost segment once its remaining segments are at full hp and it is out of combat. The lost segment will simply regrow off the back end of its body, but at 10% of its HP. Must have other segments at full health for at least 4 seconds before it regrows. Crowd Control Crowd control works a little differently on Kalalipan. Sense it is divided into segments, both kinds of segments have different interactions with certain forms of crowd control. The head and legs have a resistance to polymorph, meaning that the duration of polymorphs are reduced by 10% naturally. Leg segments are immune to forced action crowd control which are; charms, fears, flees, taunts. Legs segments are immune to blinds and disarms as they can't basic attack. Slows are shared among all segments. Silences are shared among all segments. Leg segments have a resistance to stuns/suspensions reducing the duration by 10%. As long as the head isn't effected by a stun, suspension, root, knock up, suppression, or entangle; then Kalalipan can still move during the duration of the cc, however it will remain leashed to the effected segments meaning that it can't move out of its range. Pulls and knock backs will leash the other segments with them when being pulled or knocked back. Certain Items Kalalipan works a bit differently with aura items was well. Each segment will radiate the aura from the item. So item 3068item 3110item 3001item 1302item 3105 these items or items like these will have a larger radius to effect other units. However sense each segment radiates this aura it doesn't stack the effects of them. Active items like item 3143item 3800item 3364item 3056 will only come from the head segment. item 3139item 3157item 3222 will effect every segment regardless of which it is used on.

  • Q - Venomous Passive: When Kalalipan deals physical damage to a target from basic attacks or abilities, they will be poisoned. Poisoned targets will take 1/1.5/2/2.5/3% of their current health as magic damage every 0.5 seconds for 2 seconds. Active: Kalalipan opens its pincers in a wide arch before clamping them together dealing 50/70/90/110/130 (+ 50% AD)(+ 10/15/20/25/30 per segment) physical damage to all enemies in front of it. Doesn't interrupt movement commands. 9/8/7/6/5 second cooldown, 60 mana cost, Range 350.

> In-Depth Kalalipan's two main forms of damage. Its passive applies a poison that deals current health damage to targets that are dealt physical damage by Kalalipan. The damage is magical and gets weaker per tick of the poison due to the target losing health. The poison can be refreshed. For the active portion it deals physical damage to every target in front of it after a 0.5 second delay. This does it in a small linear AoE and can be cast while moving. This doesn't interrupt movement commands. The damage of this increases for each segment by the way. So it is a lot stronger when having all its segments alive.

  • W - Skitter Active: Gains a 100% increase to movement speed that decays over 1.5/2/2.5/3/3.5 seconds and the ability to pass through units for 6 seconds. During this time each segment that passes over an enemy unit will deal 10/15/20/25/30 (+ 3% of Max HP) physical damage. Each segment can only deal damage once to the same target per cast. If this ability is on cooldown, if a body segment were to get destroyed then it will reduce the cooldown of this ability by 50% of its base cooldown. 18/17/16/15/14 second cooldown, 80 mana cost.

> In-Depth This is Kalalipan's main form of mobility. While it isn't a dash, this effectively doubles its movement speed for a brief time. Putting a rank into this ability will not increase the amount of movement speed received but rather decreases the rate at which this speed decays. As well this allows it to travel through units and damage them while doing so. Each time a segment passes over a unit it will deal the damage, so at max you can damage a unit 6 times with a single use of this ability. The same segment can't damage the same unit twice in one cast. As well if he is losing its body segments, then it can use this to escape. The ability gets a 50% reset when a body segment gets destroyed. You can use this to engage or disengage accordingly.

  • E - Web Glands Toggle: Starts spraying a sticky webbing in a cone toward the direction it is facing, applying webbing every second to all enemies in the cone. Enemies that come into contact with the webbing will have a stack of webbing applied to them, they will be slowed by 20% for having at least one stack of webbing. Once at 4 stacks the target will be rooted for 1.5/1.75/2/2.25/2.5 seconds. Targets who were rooted by this ability can't have more then one stack of webbing applied to them for 4 seconds. Webbing stacks last for 2 seconds. 1 second cooldown, 10 mana per second, range 500.

> In-Depth This ability right here is how Kalalipan can stick to most of its targets. A toggle ability which sprays a constantly conic slow in the direction the centipede is facing. It stacks up on targets before rooting them in place and requires 4 stacks to do so. Keep in mind you need to apply this web on the target for at least 4 seconds before the root is applied. Though having one stack of the webbing will at least slow the target by a small amount. This slow does not increase for having multiple stacks on them. After being rooted a target can't be rooted again for a certain amount of time. However they can still be slowed as at least one stack of webbing can be reapplied and refreshed. Only one stack however tell they 4 seconds have passed from the root. Then more can be accumulated.

  • R - Constrict Active: Suppresses target enemy champion or monster for 0.3/0.4/0.5 seconds per segment. Suppressed unit can't be targeted by other sources other then Kalalipan. Deals 10/13/16 (+ 0.10% of Max HP) physical damage per segment every 0.3 seconds. Body segments can't be destroyed during suppress but can still be damaged. 170/160/150 second cooldown, 100 mana cost, 350 range.

> In-Depth Kalalipan's ultimate ability is indeed a strong one. It offers lock down on a single target or objective monster, such are dragon or barron. Now one thing you should know is that the duration of this suppress increases the more segments it has. At rank one you can get a 1.2 second suppress at max, but at rank three you can have it last up to 3 seconds. During this time the suppressed target is untargetable by enemies or allies, with the exception of Kalalipan. So damage is applied constantly throughout the duration As well Kalalipan can apply summoner spells or active items to the target while they are suppressed, which can add even more damage or control. During this ability its segments can't be destroyed, but be brought down to zero hp. If this happens then they will immediately die upon the suppression ending. You might notice that there very little scaling to this ability. Well there is a reason for that. 0.10% of max health per tick, which is equal to 1.6%/2.5%/6% of Max HP when used with max segments for additional damage on top of the poison from the Q's passive. This ability hurts like no other especially in the late game. This ability has a rather long cooldown however, so be cautious about when to use it. Because one thing about this ult is that it can't be canceled by reactivating the ability, so it has to commit to the target.

Items

Necessary item 1409item 3083item 3117

Kalaliapn's home is in the jungle. This centipede is most successful when on the hunt rather then being out in lanes. Cinderhulk is the enchantment of choice. Having the extra health and health scaling will help this bug survive those nasty jungle monsters as well scale into late game. Warmog's stacks a massive amount of health giving each segment a larger amount of health. Not only that once Warmog's heart becomes active then regenerating lost segments will much quicker. Boots of mobility is to give this monster more of a presence on the field. Being able to traverse the jungle at high speeds means that it can gank more often. Combine this with Skitter and you won't give your opponents time to react before being trampled.

Offensive item 3742item 3800item 3071

Right off the bat you must be thinking to yourself. These items don't look offensive! However you would be surprised on how these work on Kalalipan. Dead man's plate will give this bug more speed while it travels from lane to lane. With that first basic attack slowing and dealing more damage, your opponents will not have anywhere to run. Not only that the health and armor will increase its damage and ability to survive. Righteous Glory doesn't have any offensive stats. Though it does allow you to get to your enemies quickly and even slow them down on arrival. But not only the bug but its teammates as well. With the extra mana it would allow Kalalipan to spray more web to root down those mobile targets. This centipede deals mainly physical damage so Black Clever is for those who would rather destroy then tank. Being able to eat through armor and have abilities on a lower cooldown will definitely demolish your foes. Heck even the health will give it more damage.

Defensive item 3065item 3075item 3102

Kalalipan will have a lot of health coming its way. Though it still needs defensive stats to survive. Spirit Visage will help when healing is needed. It synergizes with the increases health regen from its passive and even will help those who buy Warmog's. The magic resist is definitely needed too as AoE magic spells are this bugs bane. Thorn Mail is another must for those going against auto attack based champions. If they so happen to by Runaan's Hurricane and you have this, oh man they are going to regret attacking this bug. Hurricane will hit multiple segments meaning that Thorn Mail will send back all that damage from each segment. Lastly is Banshee's Veil, giving that well needed health, magic resist, and regen. The shield is the most important part though. Being able to absorb one ability is very vital. While the spell shield is applied too all segments, if one is popped then they are all popped. Still a very good purchase for tankiness.

**Jokes & Taunts **

Usually I don't bother with this section for concepts. This time however I felt like I should to give a little more for my champions. Sense Kalalipan doesn't actually speak though, these wont be quotes. Rather these are actions, so keep note of that.

Joke

Kalalipan will roll itself up into a ball and begin to spin up. This joke doesn't have an end and the bug will keep spinning. If it spins to long enough then smoke will start to rise. Think of it like a tire burning rubber.

Taunt

Kalalipan will rear back getting as tall as it can be. Then it menacingly will open up its pincers and shrieking. During this, the bug will do a fake lung towards the nearest enemy. (This doesn't actually cause it to move)

Dance

Kalalipan will start to move sporadically across the ground. It will move much like the centipede from the old Atari games. It will do this in random directions.

Laugh

Kalalipan mainly just chitters but it sounds a lot like snickering. There is no movement for this but just that light snickering.

Your worst enemies

BrandRumbleKayle

This little section is just to show whole you shouldn't go against as Kalalipan. Brand is by far the worse match up for this centipede. Brand is basically the pest exterminator. With all the AoE this pyromancer provides he will simply melt the giant bug with ease. Getting hit by Brand's ult means that it can bounce between all of Kalalipan's segments, which equals one roasted centipede. Put his passive damage on top of that and you wont be skittering away anytime soon. Rumble is another champion that will deal a lot of damage to all of Kalalipan's segments if the bug isn't careful. Getting hit by The Equalizer is a death wish. Kayle on the other hand is some one hard to go against. This angelic fighter can kite this bug with a combination of slows and movement speed buffs. Combine that with ranged attacks that have AoE, steal magic resist, and that are mixed damage...well that spells disaster when trying to rush her head on.

CCOS Bonus

A kit over view for Zolt, The Anti Mana A kit overview for Nuz, the Bullet Anomaly

So this is what I have for Kalalipan as of right now. I will be back with updates as time goes on. Already added quite a bit sense I have posted this bug. Anyways tell me what you guys thing about this concept. Is there anything I need to clarify or touch up on just say so. I am always open to criticism. Hope to see you next time for my next champion!

Wow, I really like how in depth you went with this guy! It is a great concept with the fact that he breaks apart, I imagine him being this huge champion that is simply terrifying. The thing is having each section take damage separately could present some challenges, for example many of the forms of CC in the game can be seen coming, if you were to simply turn your self quickly enough you essentially have extreme amounts of tenacity. Add merc treads and the elixir of iron and you might as well be immune to CC. On the other hand I fear he could be demolished by AOE based champions. If each segment takes its own damage then a Nunu Ulty could erase this guy. My only other real concern is that any physical damage also deals 20% current health... a blade of the ruined king is 8%. Overall, I really like this idea, it is 1000x more in depth than many of the other concepts I have read and your little in depth tabs are something I love, as I do them when I am making champion ideas too! I look forward to reading these other previous champions you have made! I hope this sort of helps, I don't want you to feel like I am just shooting down your idea. Have a great day, and keep up the awesome ideas!

Great consept, really detailed and unique. You said that you could take critique so i thought that i could give some to you: First of all i think that his w (Speed boost) should not take up a spell slot, and instead be on his passive like this: If a part is destroyed he gets the speed boost/ no minion collision. That whould make it so that removing a part of him whould make him more dangerous if you are fleeing from him or if he escapes he gets a free speed boost. That passive should also be activatible for him (AKA another button). That whould stop him from being able to rush into/ out of batteles with no drawback on it and free up a skill. (Im probably just saying it becose i dont like dravens blood rush). Also, does every part have induvidual regen, in that case warmogs armor (i hope i said correct) whould make him a ultra healing tank of DOOM ( Like my main Zac). Hope you continue to make fan champs :)

P.S Im on my phone thats why i might have misspelled some things.

I think that the passive giving him a totally different way of killing him sounds cool and unique +1! Kind of like zac except this one stays alive while the segments are being destroyed. The kit fits really well with what kind of creature this guy is. He should have a special interaction like a joke or taunt with kha'zix since they're both bugs. Only problem with this champ is the name. Is it possible to simplify it?

Just a warning, even IF riot likes your idea, I think they will have a problem with putting this guy in the game. This is like the problem with Ao shin. Riot is having problems putting a serpentine figure into the game.

Just curious, out of the list of 25 entries, how did you choose mine to review? Is it because the name looked cool? I feel flattered.

i want to see this cometrue as it is simple unique i believe it would fit well, i also would love/fear seeing that beast coming out of the jungle into my lane*[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]*

Lore - It is a nice solid lore. I would have liked a lot more description of the surroundings. As they are on an expedition to Kumungu jungle, I would have likeds them to jot down what they see. The description would have to be human, and what I mean by this is to not use lots of fancy wording, just nice description. Also, I would have also liked a few little nods towards Kumungus residence of Nidalee and Zyra. If you read Zyra's lore especially, you could have described all the dead plants making up the floor. Also, Kumungu is more dead than alive, with an eerie undertone and dull green leaves.

Passive - I like the general idea, but the problem is that is has unclear optimization. I know you are only trying to blalance it, but increasing his health regen the lower he is to death is just an annoying passive, and will ultimately lead to some very annoying escapes at no health.

Q - Nothing really needs to be said her, just a solid damaging spell.

W - I can also see this getting annoying. He has great escapes, by using this massive movement speed buff, and then reducing its cooldown by 50% if a segment gets destroyed. At high cooldown reduction, if a segment is destroyed, he will instantly get the cooldown back up and have another massive burst of movement speed. He can just run away with high health regen.

E - One again, not much needs to be said. I really like the stacking mechanic, but once again, the kit seems annoying. Another way people can get annoyed is by thinking that the champion the enemy is playing takes no skill to do something a champion that takes so much skill can do. Everything is very basic with lots of power in chase, escape, kiting etc.

R - I like the way you are balancing Kalapin's kit using these segments, making this spell weaker the more segments have been destroyed. Having that, and the bonus max health damage, shows that this is an engagement tool. It has some very low numbers on the damage, but has some very clutch utility so the segments can't be destroyed.

Overall, I can see people getting very annoyed playing against Kalalipan. He is really easy to play with a lot of power.

Ya did it again Bowie, congrats on the January CCOS win!

Akenero (awesome volunteer artist fella) wants to get hold of you and do a sketch for you! Do him a favor and get in contact ASAP, the sooner he can get on it the easier it is.
