We Need to Apporach Champ Select Differently (Long)

The way banning and "planning" phase are currently set up is not working, shouldn't we change it? It, like some of the other systems in the game like the tutorial, do not encourage the right mentality for League. The system currently currently has you doing multiple things wrong.

  1. First thing it has you do in a game is select who you want to play.
  2. It has you banning
  3. it forces you to pick a champ on a whim immediately after banning

The general Idea here is that the logical mental paths it has you take focuses on you deciding alone and has holes for trolls to pick on. Let me elaborate:

  1. When playing seriously you want to be open to playing what is best for your team, specifically working around what your team wants to do in terms of a comp. This may mean that one or more people are one trick ponies or are limited, and odds are that you have one or more flexible people that can work to fill in gaps in the team. Where the current system does not prevent this necessarily, it is not encouraging you to work with the team.

  2. Having the banning phase be immediately after the first phase makes it possible for trolls to ban champions of those on their own team. There are multiple reason why someone would do this, but most of the time in my experience it is because said person wants someone else to dodge the match for them. Having the banning phase after is advantageous in some ways, like banning based one what your team decided as a comp, if "decided" is what you want to call it, but I feel there is a better way of organizing the this.

  3. Again the system forces the individual player to make a decision, basically, on his own. There is no where near enough time for the individual to discuss in chat with their team what champion they should play in the specific situation if say their champion was banned or they or their team mates know who they are going to play is a bad Idea.

I propose that the approach Riot is taking, where well intentioned, is not the best approach. If I would have to suggest an approach it would be on encouraging players to come into a champ select more prepared, and give them quicker means to communicate simply and effectively. As a for instance, have the system set up so that the player selects, each time he starts a new que, he selects his two roles and then have him select the champions he is competent with in that role. That way when he gets into a champ select his team can see what each team mate is capable of and ban accordingly. The next thing that needs to be decided is pick order and you could do this one of two ways, you could have a preference selected before you que or you could decide it in champ select. I will elaborate the latter first as its a bit more complex and has its share of possible issues. Once you get in as your team gets its turn to vote your team would need to decide who is going to pick on that turn, this has obvious flaws that may have the possibility of being worked out. The other option I tend to like better however, this being that you would select your preference of picking sooner or later and then the system would match you based on the number of champions you have qued with. The lower number of champions you select the higher on the picking order you will be. Obviously this has the issue of being exploited so that people can get where they want in the picking order. My solution for this would be incorporating the mastery system in and adjusting it to the system as a way to "prove" you understand the champions. if you put a champion on the list when you que that you have a low mastery on then it wont carry nearly as much weight as one you have master 5 and increasingly less than 6 and more so again 7. If you dont have a mastery on the champion then it wont be considered. The system would order the champs in your list based on your mastery points with that champ and show its rank. They are already adding more bans so that each person on a team gets a ban, so that is not a problem. From there you could add any number of quality of life features like allowing team mates to click on who they would suggest each team mate to play, who each team mate prefers not to play out of their list, so on and so on, the possibilities are large. The options for team communication are larger with this kind of system and it would take just as much or less time than the current system. Obviously it would have to go through play testing and maybe get slightly re iterated if there are issues, but as a concept I think this would be really beneficial to the community.
