Champion Rework: Mordekaiser, the Iron Revenant
Malicous Mortal, Worst Morde NA, Decrit, and other Morde mains, I hope you see this and I'd love your thoughs on it!
**PRIMARY ROLE: FIGHTER SECONDARY ROLE: TANK **
Health: 575 - 2105 Health Regen: 7.5 - 19 Range: 175 Attack Damage: 61 - 138 Attack Speed: 0.601 - (+0 - 37%) Armor: 27 - 85 Magic Resistance: 32 - 54 Movement Speed: 330
At most stages of the game, Mordekaiser fails to fulfill his thematic - he's a massive suit of armor wielding an equally massive ensorcelled mace, with malevolent red eyes and powers over death and metal. Well, most of the time, he's a slow, lumbering target to ranged harass, who fails to accomplish anything useful if he can't get to his target. And without any CC or mobility whatsoever, the Iron Revenant often fails to do so. Then comes the second problem - once Morde does get onto a target to slug it out with his signature mace, you don't feel like you're even wielding one. Wouldn't a ten-ton hunk of spike metal do a bit more than a shit-ton of damage? Introduce the brand-new Mace of Spades - Morde turns into a freight train that lumbers towards the target location. Upon reaching it, he slams his mace down, hard, and stuns enemies in a large radius, also dealing a shit-ton of damage. Morde keeps his thematic as the lumbering suit of metal with a big mace, but he now has ways to interact with his opponents outside of mindless E spam and stat-checking them with his ultimate.
With this rework I tried to accomplish two things. One, the effective health Morde's shield offers makes it impossible to grant him base stats befitting of a proper Juggernaut - with some of the lowest health and armor values in the game, Mordekaiser struggles in the laning phase if he can't reliably keep up his shield, especially against ranged opponents who freely poke him from a distance and deny him ways to trade without mindless E spams. By lowering the effectiveness of Mordekaiser's shield against minions and its maximum cap, properly buffing his base stats allows him to do better in melee trades and also leave him less dependent on the shield as a mechanic. Even better, the addition of Tornado of Souls creates clear windows in which Mordekaiser wants to trade in lane, and rewards Mordekaisers who can quickly fill up their shield. Activating Mace of Spades while Tornado of Souls rages around you creates a rampaging monster that demands respect and avoidance. Even better, placing a Chapel of Ghouls behind your lane opponent creates interesting choices for them - they can either avoid the waves of souls and meet the metal onslaught head-on, or try and escape the flow of lost souls and risk their soul joining the forever. This segways into the second problem I attempted to solve - sure, Mordekaiser deals a lot of damage if he gets on a target, but he can only do so in the most ideal of situations. By making Mordekaiser more self-sufficient, players can feel better about fighting their opponents, on their terms. Mordekaiser's ult remains largely untouched - ghosts last much longer, move faster, and can mirror his passive, but the curse itself deals less damage and no longer grants bonus health. Mordekaiser no longer has reactive damage from his auto-attack enhancers and on-hand point-blank DOT - he works best when building up the pain on his enemy through repeated Siphons before charging forward and slamming his mace straight through their skulls - all the while, a storm of metal rages around him and waves of souls flow over the battle.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, Chapel of Ghouls and Tornado of Souls are heavy metal song titles. Enjoy.
