I like the concept (especially now that Ryze doesn't have his huge book anymore) but as others have said, he would need a gameplay niche to fill that would make them unique.

Unfortunately nothing of the sort really stands out to me, except maybe a slightly less overloaded version of the Evoker/Invoker(?) from DotA in that their abilities correspond to runes or spells they can combine for additional effects.

Well riot always wants to put in a unique mechanic that no other champion has. Like Rakan's ulti running arround playing tag to cc the enemy, camille's ultimate and hookshot, ivern's jungle clear... etc. I can't think of a unique mechanic, that no other champ has and that fits the theme of a classic mage. Any ideas?
