You know when you say "Chinese" you're strictly referring to people from China, not of Chinese descent but living in America right? People of Chinese descent but were born in America and still live in America are still technically American. Maybe Chinese-American.

Isn't really how it works. The phrases use the same wording but their meanings are very different. They say that to refer to their race which is a lot different than their nationality. Take Black People for example, they're Americans of African descent. Sure at times they might address themselves as "African" but unless they actually came from Africa and immigrated to the United States then they are still just Americans of African Descent.

Though when you'd ask what race they were, they'd say "African" or something synonymous.
