[Champion Concept] Vaeil, The Last Archon

Inspiration Do you know about Invoker from DotA? No? Read this.

I've always liked the concept of being able to switch spells, but according to Riot this doesn't belong in LoL because it's too complicated to play against when you are a newbie. Well this is my attempt at making a champion that can switch between spells and not be too overbearing in terms of how much knowledge you need to play him.

As for Vaeil's personnality and appearance, I actually thought about those before deciding on the kit. At first he was a completely different champion (kit wise), but I was thinking about this concept at the same time and the visual, personality and kit just worked together, especially as I figured out his complete back story. The resemblance between Vaeil and Invoker is actually a result of me trying to fill a niche for LoL that Invoker fills for DotA. Basically, right now I feel like there is no regal mage in LoL and this was my attempt to fill that archetype.

Anyway, I'm not hoping my concept will be lauded for its originality, I just really like the character and I hope you do too ^_^

Personality and Appearance Vaeil is very proud of himself and confident in the superiority of his magic over that of everyone else's. He is unsatisfied with the state the world is in right now and mourns the loss of his people. He is driven by his dream to restore his nation to its former glory and save it from doom. He is very serious and has no time for anything or anyone that is slowing him down.

Vaeil wears rich, gilded purple robes adorned with gems. One of his distinctive features is the clawed gauntlet he wears on his right hand. It is golden and on it is a single, massive gem that constantly shifts colors between blue, purple and red. Vaeil has short, golden blonde hair and blue eyes. He is young, around 20. He is handsome, but his face is cold and never shows any emotions, except the constant displeasure he has of being stuck in the present Runeterra. He is of medium height. Aside from the hair, this drawing of a young Kael'Thas represents what I have in mind pretty well. http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs27/f/2008/068/6/6/Young_Prince_Kael__thas_by_pulyx.jpg When he walks, he is actually gliding. He doesn't levitate as high as champions like Zilean or Syndra, but he doesn't walk. When he attacks a target, he raises his hand and no projectile is launched. Instead, the target is visibly struck by lightning all over its body.

Role Vaeil is a fragile, long-range mage with no mobility and situational CC. He relies on high damage and the versatility of his ultimates (yes you read that right) to provide his team what it needs when it needs it.

Base Stats Health: 508-1782 Health Regen: 5.75-15.5 Mana: 353-1278 Mana Regen: 6.0-19.6 Range: 550 Attack Damage: 50-99 Attack Speed: 0.625 (+0-32.3%) Armor: 24-78 Magic Resist: 30 Movement Speed: 335

Kit

Before I list the abilities, I need to first explain Vaeil's unique mechanic, which is tied to a unique item he starts the game with, much like Viktor. Unlike Viktor, Vaeil's unique item does not modify his spells. However, it has a number of upgrades you can buy, up to 3 (so you can't buy all the upgrades). This is to encourage and support different item builds that will make one or more of Vaeil's 4 ultimate abilities stronger (the ultimates scale with different stats).

Vaeil's unique item is called the Archon's Talon. It has a unique active that allows him to switch between his 4 different ultimates. When used, 4 choices are presented to him and he must pick one. Selecting a new ultimate requires a 1 second channel, much like Kha'Zix's evolution system. This choice is NOT permanent. However, the item has a lengthy cooldown until it is upgraded. When fully upgraded, the cooldown is all but negligible. However, all ultimates share cooldowns. So, if you use one that has a 100 seconds cooldown and then switch to one with a shorter cooldown, the newly selected ultimate will still be on a 100 seconds cooldown.

The item has the following stats. Grants +3/4/5/6 ability power per level Unique Active: Select a new ultimate (300/180/60/20 seconds cooldown) Upgrade Options: +15% Cooldown Reduction| +2 AP per level| +15 magic penetration| +8% movement speed| +150% mana regeneration and +300 mana (the last one is one upgrade, not two) Upgrade Cost: 1000/1250/1500 gold

Passive - Magelord

Every time an ability is cast in Vaeil’s vicinity he gains one stack of Arcane Resurgence. Upon reaching 8 stacks, he gains 5% bonus ability power for 6 seconds. This effect increases by 1% for every time it was previously activated.

Vaeil does not gain stacks while Magelord is active.

Q - Essence Reaper

Cost: 65/70/75/80/85 mana Cooldown: 6/5.25/4.5/3.75/3 seconds Range: 900 Area of Effect: 350 Width: 80 Missile Speed: 1500 Vaeil sends out two scythes of energy that cross path at the target location and detonate. Any enemy hit by this ability takes 70/110/150/190/230 (+75% ability power) magic damage. Enemies hit by the explosion take 35/55/75/95/115 (+37.5% ability power) magic damage and 35/55/75/95/115 (+37.5% ability power) true damage.

This ability looks like two Diana Qs that will converge at a selected location and explode in an AoE.

W - Counterspell

Cost: 70/75/80/85/90 mana Cooldown: 20/19/18/17/16 seconds Range: 700 Area of Effect: 450 Vaeil fills the area with currents of unstable magic for 1 second. Enemies in the area that cast a spell take 60/100/140/180/220 (+60% ability power) magic damage and are stunned for 1 second. The spell will not take effect and will go on cooldown.

This ability has no delay and can interrupt abilities that are mid cast animation.

E - Energy Siphon

Cost: 80/85/90/95/100 mana Cooldown: 12/11/10/9/8 seconds Range: 800 Area of Effect: 400 Width: 60 Missile Speed: 1900 Vaeil creates a fissure that absorbs the target’s energy, slowing its movement speed for 3 seconds by up to 20%/25%/30%/35%/40% over 1.5 second. After 1.5 second, the fissure launches a projectile that will shoot in the target’s direction. The projectile will explode on contact with any enemy unit, dealing 70/110/150/190/230 (+65% ability power) magic damage in a small area.

The fissure will track the target's movement until it launches the projectile. After the projectile is launched, it behaves like any normal skillshot. No matter how far the target moves, the fissure will launch its projectile and the projectile will travel until it hits something.

The slow component always starts at 10% and ramps up to between 20% and 40% over 1.5 second. The total slow duration is 3 seconds.

Ultimate 1 - Arcane Spear

Cost: 60 mana Cooldown: 3/2/1 seconds Range: 1000 Width: 80 Missile Speed: 1700 Vaiel launches a spear of arcane energy that deals 80/120/160 (+50% ability power) magic damage to every enemy it passes through. For the next 6 seconds after using this ability, Arcane Spear’s mana cost is increased by 30 and its damage is increased by 20/30/40 (+12.5% ability power). This effect stacks up to 4 times.

Ultimate 2 - Arcane Storm

Cost: 40/50/60 mana Cooldown: 20/15/10 seconds Range: 900 Leash Range: 1500 Area of Effect: 450 Sight Radius: 275 Missile Speed: 700 Delay: 0.35 second Vaeil creates a storm inside the targeted area that deals 30/45/60 (+15% ability power) magic damage every 0.5 second to all enemies within hit. Every time an enemy unit is hit by Arcane Storm it gains one stack of Arcane Disruption. This effect increases the damage taken from Arcane Storm by 10%, lasts 4 seconds and stacks up to 10 times. Vaeil can move the storm around with movement commands. Reactivating this ability will end it. Vaeil must channel to maintain the storm. Maintaining the storm costs 20/25/30 mana per second. The mana cost to sustain Arcane Storm increase by 4/5/6 every second.

While using this ability, Vaeil will rise higher and be shrouded in energy. While he is channeling this ability, he can't do anything else. If Vaeil tries to send the storm past its leash range, it will simply stop, it won't come back to where he is standing. The storm provides vision in a small area around itself.

Ultimate 3 - Arcane Barrage

Cost: 100 mana Cooldown: 120/95/70 seconds Range: 900 Area of Effect: 400 Delay: 0.25/0.5/0.75 second Vaeil bombards the targeted area with arcane energy three times in quick succession over 0.75 second. Each blast deals 105/140/175 (+30% ability power) magic damage to all enemies hit.

Vaeil must continue casting this ability for 0.5 second for it to have its full effect. The first blast is launched as soon as the ability is activated and hits after a 0.25 delay, at 0.25 second the second blast is sent and hits 0.5 second after the ability was first cast and at 0.5 second the third blast is sent and hits 0.75 second after the ability was activated.

Also, yes, I know this is the SECONDARY name of Xerath's ultimate. Here's my thoughts on this.

Ultimate 4 - Arcane Cataclysm

Cost: 200 mana Cooldown: 150/130/110 seconds Range: 700 Area of Effect: 600 Knockback Distance: 400 Delay: 0.65 second Vaeil violently unleashes a vast amount of arcane energy in the targeted area, dealing 200/275/350 (+70% ability power) magic damage, knocking back enemies hit and silencing them for 1.25 second.

Lore “Strike down the false Archon!” Vaeil quickly cut down the rebel with a scythe of energy. More came at him, but he quickly turned their own spells against them. Soon, all that was left of Opheran’s lapdogs were motes of dust lazily floating through the air. Vaeil could hear his allies still fighting with the bulk of the rebel forces. Against all common sense, he had forged his way onward alone, leaving even his personal guard behind. Through the windows he could see the Silver Spires, crimson in the light of the dying day, set aflame by the ambition of a foolish man. The city below was being torn apart by civil war. The fighting would have to end soon if they wanted to have any chance of fighting off the Protectorate. Reports indicated that their winged savior had left them, but their bloodthirsty warriors were still tearing through the small army led by Magister Ythin. Despite his best efforts, the once-acclaimed general was being pushed back farther and farther into Magelord territory. Not for the first time, Vaeil cursed his sister for leading them down this path of war and ruin. He chased thoughts of Azara from his mind. For now, only the rebel scum mattered. He could feel Opheran and his cabal working some complex, unstable spell in the next room. Several wards had been placed on the great golden doors of Oheran’s laboratory, but Vaeil unravelled them easily. The doors were opened by blasts of magic coming from inside. The young Archon ducked at the last moment, then replied with a terrifying barrage of his own. He had always looked down on violent uses of magic, but today he was glad his father had made a point of training his mind and body for conflict. Opheran’s last guards had been completely obliterated. Vaeil stepped inside the laboratory. Azara’s pawn and a dozen other magisters were focusing their energy into a large arcane matrix. The group had formed a circle around what appeared to be a wild maelstrom of energy. They could not fight him, the volatile nature of the spell made that obvious. If they let go for even one moment, they would burn out their gift at best and take out half the capital with them at worst. “End this madness now, Opheran!” Vaeil commanded. The older man sneered at him through the pulses of energy that seemed to fight him at every opportunity. Sweat drippled down his face. He was slowly losing control. “Well, well. If it isn’t the boy who calls himself Archon. What, the assembly was too busy bickering to deal with me themselves? They had to send their little puppet?” Vaeil kept his face calm. “I know you’re still under Azara’s control. If you give up now, I will free your mind and offer you leniency. Your followers will be treated fairly. The bloodshed can end now.” Opheran guffawed at the proposition. “You think you’re in control, don’t you? Bah! Soon, I will rectify the mistakes that were made. The rightful Archon will sit at the head of the assembly and she will reward my efforts.” “What are you doing, Opheran?” Vaeil’s eyes narrowed as he focused his attention on the spell that was being woven in front of him. No, he thought. Even he would not be this mad! “It is too late for you to worry about any of this. Witness the hour of my triumph!” Suddenly, Opheran’s spell shifted, its intricate matrix collapsing on itself. The magister’s grin turned into a mask of horror as he realized his mistake. Vaeil deployed a protective barrier around himself as the whole world seemed to fade away into a bright light. Then came the darkness.

A moment later, Vaeil’s barrier was shattered. He fell down on his hands and knees. His ears were ringing from the awful screeching sound the spell had made when it had gone awry. His vision was blurry. He breathed deeply, trying to regain his bearings. Something was wrong. The ground beneath him… He opened his eyes. It was grass. He had feared the spell had destroyed his city, but there was no ruble around him, no ruins. He looked up and for the first time saw that he was being observed. An old man wearing flowing robes and an odd contraption on his back was floating in front of him. His wispy white beard floated in the breeze. “Are you all right, young man?” he asked. His kindly voice was reassuring. “I… where am I?” Vaeil looked up, squinting at the sun. It was nearing its apex. “When… What time is it?” “Ah, I was afraid you would ask that. It depends on which calendar you use, really.” The old man offered him a sad smile. “What? The Aleanic calendar, of course. Even the Proctetorate uses it. Where are we?” “Near Bandle City. It is home to a people I fear you may know nothing about. After all, they did not settle this area until well after you were gone.” “I don’t understand! Do not speak to me in riddles! Who are you?” “I am Zilean. Some call me the Chronokeeper, for I am an expert in all manners of time magic. You, my poor friend, were caught in a time rift I detected a few days ago, frozen between two moments for thousands of years. How many, I cannot say exactly. Whatever trapped you was unstable, dangerous. I have no idea how you could have survived this…” “But I… No, this cannot be.” Vaeil looked into the man’s sorrowful eyes and knew what he said to be true. Curse you, Opheran. My people, gone? What happened to them? He could imagine the capital being torn apart by Opheran’s temporal magic. With the loss of its Archon and assembly and the Protectorate marching to victory, the magelord nation had probably been annihilated. Vaeil dug his fingers into the ground. On his right hand he still carried the Archon's Talon, which had been given to him only a few days ago. The last remnant of his once proud civilization. “You say you are an expert in time magic? Send me back! I can… I can change things. It’s not too late. I can save everyone…” “That, my friend, would be most unwise. Time is a fickle thing. Trust a man who once went down the same path as you: there is no undoing the mistakes of the past. I can help you adapt to this time, but I would not send you back, even if I could.” Vaeil fought his dizziness and slowly got up. “I am Vaeil Alathius Arean, Archon of the Magelords. You **will **obey me, old man.” He began weaving the forbidden spell. Azara’s favored tool. The old man smiled. “I think not.” Before Vaeil could bend his mind, everything became a blur. By the time he was ready to unleash the spell, the world came to a standstill. The sun was rising again. The Chronokeeper had slowed Vaeil down considerably, giving himself plenty of time to escape. A second had passed for him, but almost a day had passed for the world. The young Archon let out a curse. It seemed that, for the moment, he was trapped and lost in this alien world, so far from his own. Vaeil clenched his gauntleted hand. It doesn’t matter if you run. I will find you, Zilean, and once I do… History will be re-written.

this is remarkably well thought out, but doesn't this seem a lot like Invoker from DotA

Arcane barrage name has already been used unfortunately, for Xerath.
