Is Katarina looking better in this poster than in her new splash. I feel like the poster meets all the requirements for the "new kat look." She looks prettier, but not too pretty, and if Riot changed the background (not a hard change), the splash could depict an action shot (maybe her ult?).

Different Artist, Different Style.
it's because riot is obsessed with all their splash arts being battle/in-combat poses while most of the really nice splash arts are battle-ready/standing-like-an-epic-boss poses
your poster if of the latter. kat's splash is of the former
That really doesn't tell you much of who she is :T. A newcomer would look and see she has daggers, so a rouge? She also seems to be on fire, so she must do some fire related stuff? New splash art you can see at least that she can teleport, she uses knives, and she is coming for You.
