LESS TILT & MORE COMPETETIVENESS? Revamping the Ranked system to remove Promotion matches (concept).

My idea of revamping the ranked system is to remove promotions, and perhaps making LP harder to gain (to make up for promotion matches being out of the system), so that it'llstill be equally hard to get to a division, but now we just don't have promotion matches. Because let's be honest here, a huge portion of ladder anxiety comes from promotion and demotion. And I think a reason for why demotion is so scary could be because of the fear that it'll be so hard to get promoted back again.

So to give a theoretical example of a revamped system: Right now, let's say you gain 20LP per win.

  • To get from div 5 to 4, you'll need to play 20x5 to get to 100LP, then you will need to win 2 games. This equals in 7 games needed to be played, and won, to get to the next division (and as mentioned, 2 of those will be promotion matches).
  • Now if you revamped the Ranked system, and removed promotions, you would down the LP gain to 14 for a win. So in 7 games (only wins, no promotion matches since they would be removed) you would be at 100LP (lets pretend its 100 LP, I know 14 LP x 7 games is actually 98LP, but you can't gain 14.2LP per match so what do you say), which would cause you to immediately hit the next division, which would be 4.

In both of these systems, you need to play 7 straight wins to get to the next division. Of course there are further alterations you could do, but I hope you get the idea.

Right now with the current system it can take days to get promoted to div 4, and then you can easily get demoted within hours after reaching it. And then you might say, “but what if someone goes on a lucky 7 win streak in the new system and gets to the next div when he doesnt really deserve it?”. Well, hidden elo is still a thing. His hidden elo could still be of div 5, but his profile will display div 4. If he doesnt belong in div 4 he will fall back to div 5 eventually, but AT LEAST he had his moment of being in div 4 rather than losing promos and never hitting it, right? :)

Also I think that promotion matches make a bad influence. They are only created for winning hard, only to get PROMOTED. Thats their name, aye? You dont gain Lp for winning them. You are focused to just win them to get promoted. If you win 1 and lose the next two, you will not have gained LP then lost twice, youll just have lost. This makes promo matches into a fun-sucking devil that makes you unable to appreciate the match itself, wether it was a win or loss, you only focus on winning the next promotion game.

I understand that you guys want LoL to be competetive, and maybe thats why you put promo matches to be a thing in the first place, but isn’t it enough that LoL is a competetive and hard game already by itself? Do you really have to put promo magches to be a thing OUTSIDE the game to tilt you? I dont think the game needs one more (and highly unnessesairy) thing to make it EVEN harder. This thing is promo matches, and I think we could do good without them. The game would still keep its competetive environment due to its design, no need for promos. In fact removing promos could make the game more appealing to the players who dont dare to go Ranked anymore because they get too tiled and disencouraged to play after having tough luck in promo/demotion. Now instead they could be compelled to go more competetive, since a huge lackluster would be removed. But it would also be a pleasent change to the veterans who use all their brain power to focus on the in-game battles, now we wouldnt have to focus on the outside ones. Let the competetiveness be in-game only.

I can't even play ranked, but this sounds more fair. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

I'm not opposed to a revamp of how ranked works.

This is one way to do that.

I would propose removing promotion matches as well, but only do rank/division changes once a week, say at 11:59PM every Saturday night. Allow me to elaborate.

My current Rank is Silver I with 0 LP. Throughout the week I play ranked, I win some, I lose some, but I end up with 117 LP on Saturday. Well, with the fancy wizardry that happens in the black box that is MMR/ELO at Riot HQ, the system calculates current averages in each division, looks at all the various factors, and for each player, makes a decision. In my case, I am Silver I with 117 LP, the game decides I should be moved up to the next rank, and thus when I log in on Sunday, I get that lovely message that says "Congrats, you are now in Gold V."

This also works the other way.

I am now Gold V with 0 LP. Throughout the week I play ranked, I win some, I lose some, but I end up with 32 LP on Saturday. Same wizardry happens, the system decides I am the weakest link, and I should be moved down to Silver V. I log in Sunday, I get that dreadful message and must start the grind all over again.

The third alternative is, say I end up with 68 LP on Saturday, and the system decides I am right where I belong, and I get no message on Sunday and continue with my life.

Make sense?

It is basically how the Master tier is decided, but for all ranks across the board.

No more promotion matches. No more worrying about trolls in those specific games. You just play, do your best, and earn LP.
