Could use some help creating a Nami avatar

Sooo...I'm terrible with photo editors, and have no experience with the advanced tools I want/need to use (you know, everything MS Paint doesn't have).

I'm wanting to create a picture of Urf the Nami-tee posing like the Slayer Jinx catface sticker. [slayer-jinx-catface] http://i.snag.gy/mtVJQ.jpg

I started by simply sketching it in pencil (it'd be even worse starting in the editor without a template) and after putting it on my computer started outlining it...but I quickly realized it was never going to come out good.

So, any advice? I'm using Gimp 2 and could use a basic tutorial to perfect the outline and color it in, or just commission it for a Mystery Chest :3

Edit 1: Progress. Still don't know what I'm doing, but things happened.

Hey, DTM! If I were to offer any advice, it would be to cheat more! I took a partial try at doing the icon myself, taking the original Slayer Jinx icon as the template to trace over:

With Nami's eyes, she looks pretty creepy :D But you can see that I just put the image into an editor, scaled it waaay up (easier to work big and scale down) and then scribbled the differences in the shapes as best I could. Don't know if my scribble will be of use to you, or if you'd be better starting over yourself (probably the latter) but I hope you have luck with your drawing! As esmelar says, don't give up!

The body looks pretty good, the face and arm is what looks a little off to me, but i'm sure it's really hard to do. Might wanna check out some pictures on google of other cartoons doing the same pose and fine one with the easiest arm position. Showing debth is very difficult, but needed for the pose.
